Dear Members,

May and June have come and gone, hopefully without incident in your lives. IU got through the Mini 500 and graduations, and the new University Club Board had it’s first meeting.

There will be some exciting programs coming this season so you will want to mark your date book beginning with the Welcome Reception with Hank Walter, the new IMU Director, as our honored guest. This will be followed by the UWC Fall Luncheon and Interest Group sign-up at St. Marks Church.

Something new will be a tailgate party for the IU and (the evil) Purdue Old Oaken Bucket game. The party will be at the Club. You will not want to miss the Christmas Gala on December 5th with a possible surprise guest… does a red suit come to mind? Be sure and check the web for the complete line up.

The University Club did take one major hit, Tim Long has resigned as Vice President for personal reasons. We wish Tim well. It will be a challenge to replace him.

Other news; we are now in the credit/debit card acceptance mode, so be sure and check this out via information in the news-letter. Don’t forget to renew your membership by July 15th — and yes, you can renew by credit card! Just call the Club.

Again, be sure and check out the Interest Groups for all the great programs and sign up at both the Welcome Reception and the UWC Fall Luncheon.

SNEAK PEEK OF Upcoming Events

July has two gorgeous flowers the Delphinium, otherwise known

as the Larkspur, as well as the Water Lily. These two flowers

differ greatly in appearance. The water lily is often referred to as

“Queen of the Water” and the flowers almost look like a crown.

Water lilies change color from white to deep pink and is the only

flower that bears fruit while in full bloom.

The Delphinium might look like a single flower but is made up of numerous tiny flowers

shaped like a poker. According to history the Larkspur was originally used as a deterrent

for scorpions. The Larkspur is known as a symbol of an open heart and devoted attach-

ment. Native Americans used the Larkspur / Delphinium to make blue dye while some

Europeans ground the flowers for making ink. Both these flowers are special in their own

right making July a very special month.

There’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in celebration of a July birthday. Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love. Rubies are harder than any natural gemstone ex-cept diamond, which means a ruby is durable enough for everyday wear. Fine-quality ruby is extremely rare, and the color of the gem is most important to its value. The most prized color is a medium or medium dark vivid red or slightly purplish red.

UNIVERSITY CLUB NOTICES

Credit Cards: Credit Cards may be used when you pre-pay for University Club events, luncheons, and membership renewals. Just have your credit card in hand when you call to make a reservation or renew your membership.

NOTE! We accept cash or check only when paying at the door on the day of an event. Meadowood trips require payment by cash or check only.

Reservations: Reservations are required for all events. In many cases, a meal choice is also requested. If you make a reserva-tion and do not cancel by the deadline date for the event and do not attend the event, we are required to invoice you for the cost for the event.

Speaker Luncheons: Payment for a luncheon entitles you to 2 hours free parking in the IMU Lot 1 and Lot 2. If you would like to hear the speakers, but cannot make the lunch, you are more than welcome to come and listen.

Reminder for Parking: Don’t forget, your membership entitles you to 1/2 off the parking rates. Stop in the office between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to have your parking ticket stamped.

Give-a-Ride / Take-a-Ride Program: If you need a ride to a Club event or can provide someone with a ride to a Club event, please call Community Chair, Carolyn Anderson at 812-334-1716.

Inclement Weather: The University Club follows MCCSC when closing due to inclement weather.

The University Club of Indiana University was formed in 1912 to be a central focus for interchange and understanding among faculty, staff, alumni, their spouses, IU Retirees, and members of the community. That same year, New Mexico became the 47th state; the oversea railroad first arrived in Key West; Tokyo gave 3000 cherry trees to Washington D.C. to symbolize friendship; the Carpathia arrived in New York harbor with 708 survivors from the RMS Titanic; Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly across the English Channel; Woodrow Wilson became President; and Tarzan the Ape Man first appeared in an Ed-gar Rice Burroughs’ novel. The spirit of those early days lives on through the vitality and energy of our 642 current members. Members provide the ideas and talent that make up the quality and depth of our programs and special events. Whether your reason for being a member is making connections, utilizing the club facilities or the programming, one thing is still the same today as it was 103 years ago… Members make the differ-ence and are the driving force of our continued growth. The University Club is delighted to have the new IMU Director, Hank Walter, as our keynote speaker this year. Hank has deep roots in Bloomington and IU through his family. His late father-in-law, Dick Rubin, was one of the original faculty members at SPEA where he worked for 33 years. His wife, Elizabeth, grew up in Bloomington, and has two degrees from IU. His mother-in-law also received her master’s degree from IU and worked for the IU Foun-dation before taking a job at the Monroe County Public Library. “We’ve been to Bloomington twice a year for a number of years now,” Walter said. “I really feel connected to IU through my family.”

Hank has leadership experience at two Big Ten Universities. He spend 12 years as asso-ciate director for programs at the University of Illinois’ union and has served as chief op-erating officer of the University of Wisconsin’s union since 2005. “The IMU is an icon in the college union profession,” he said. “It is one of those special places that other unions have benchmarked themselves against. It’s got a national and international reputation. It’s an honor to be a part of that.” We think this is a special place too! Thanks Hank!

Hardcover books are circulated every two weeks October to May. The final book you receive is

yours to keep. The reading list includes both fiction and non-fiction. A reasonable fee is

charged to cover the cost of the books. Books will be passed between members on the 5th and

20th of each month, beginning October 20th and excepting January 5th.

BOOK DISCUSSION

If you love to read and discuss a variety of interesting books in paperback form, this group

is for you. The group meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month from September to May to

discuss books selected by members the previous June. Each member reads the book ahead

of time and at some point takes a turn at being a discussion leader according to the estab-

lished group guidelines. Hostess duties rotate on a voluntary Basis. The group meets in

each other's homes. Meetings begin with socializing from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM. Discussion runs from

10:00 to 11:30.

We meet at Bobby’s Colorado Steak House on the 1st Monday of each month at

11:30 AM for lunch, then play bridge until 3:30ish. Bobby’s Colorado offers a soup

& salad buffet for $6.50. Yearly dues are $5 to cover miscellaneous costs. In addition

at the beginning of each meeting, each player contributes $1 for the prize for that day.

BUNCO

BUNCO is a fast-moving, uncomplicated game of dice, luck, and prizes. If you like

plain, old fashioned fun you should seriously consider joining the BUNCO SQUAD.

We meet year round on the 3rd Monday of the month at 11:30 am at Meadowood for

lunch and play.

Players contribute $5.00 each time for the cash awards. There are 12 regular players. All others who sign up

Great Decisions is the nation's oldest, most popular program of citizen education

in world affairs. The common purpose is to help members become informed,

involved, and to understand how world events affect their daily lives.

The University Women's Club in cooperation with the Foreign Policy Association,

IU's Center for the Study of Global Change, and Meadowood, offer programs for the

2015-2016 year. Meetings will be held in the Terrace Room at Meadowood at 1:15 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday

of the month September through May. The cost of the series is $15.00 which includes a book of readings.

The Dining Out Group is open to all University Club members, singles and couples who

desire good food, good friends and good times! Everyone is welcome! Joining the group

can be done at any time simply by contacting the chairman.

The schedule and other information is sent by e-mail. Responses must be received by the stated deadline.

Dining out events are usually the fourth Sunday evening of each academic month. Dinner is typically preceded

by a social time in a member’s home. Restaurant seating is in groups of 6 – 8 to promote conversation and ca-

maraderie.

HIKING IN SOUTHERN INDIANA

If hiking off the usual path interests you, join Eleanor Lahr and others as they

check out hikes in Alan McPherson's Nature Walks in Southern Indiana and other

interesting places. Group size is limited to ten or less, depending on trail and

transportation restrictions. The schedule is subject to change. Impromptu hikes

sent out via email. Walks go rain or shine. Dress for the weather, and bring water

and a snack. Hikes vary in length And difficulty.

SUMMER HIKE — McCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK

Wednesday, July 15, 2015

John McCormick built a cabin near the canyon in the 1820's. Several trails were built by the C. C. C. in the

1930's. This summer, we will visit some of the hills, forests, waterfalls and geology that brought the pioneer-

ing Virginian to Indiana. After a roughly two-mile walk, we'll cool off with drinks at the Canyon Inn.

Leave Time: 8:00 a.m.

Carpool from March North, Kinser Pike, parking lot.

Distance: 2 miles. Estimated hiking time: 1 - 2 hours.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

YOGA

You need not feel intimidated by yoga! If you are interested in improving balance,

breathing, flexibility, and relaxation, this is the group for you. No previous

knowledge of yoga is necessary. Everyone works at their own level.

Our group meets throughout the year each Tuesday from 10 — 11 am at St. Thomas

Lutheran Church in Heritage Hall which promotes a relaxed and spiritual environ-

ment for practicing yoga. St. Thomas Lutheran is located at the intersection of

Smith Road and E. 3rd Street. Parking is plentiful.

Wear comfortable clothes to permit easy movement; bring a yoga mat and a stretchy band or belt. Our

instructors strive to leave you feeling stretched, relaxed and in a better place than when you came through

the door.

You may join us three times before membership in the University Club is required for participation. There is

no additional cost beyond your University Club membership, but we do ask that you give a minimum $20

annual donation to St. Thomas Lutheran Church for the use of their lovely facility.

Outing to Circus City & Peru Circus Saturday, July 18, Departs 8:00 AM to Peru From the barn to the big top, circus has been a part of Peru, Indiana for over 100 years. Experience the beautifully costumed young performers who are so skilled that circus fans find it hard to believe they are amateurs. Our first stop will be the International Circus Hall of Fame, located on the old circus winter quarters in Peru, Indiana, where circuses of the past wintered until they left in the spring for a new circus season. The “Circus Greats” enshrined in the Circus Hall of Fame, along with the colorful posters, wagons, models, and exhibits, bring the circus to life. After lunch (included), we will visit the popular Circus City Museum, located in the Circus City Center. It is filled with photos, min-iatures, displays, and costumes from circus past. We have reserved seats for the Peru Amateur Circus matinee at 2:00 PM. Price of $55 includes tours and admissions, lunch and reserved ticket to the circus. Bring money for a fast-food meal on the way home.

Beef & Boards Smoke on the Mountain Wednesday, July 29, Departs 10:30 AM The lovable – and imperfect – Singing Sanders Family returns in the third installment of the popular comedy series. The story takes place in 1945, seven years since the Sanders Family first came to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church for a Saturday Night Sing. Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe has been called to preach in Texas and is giving his last service before he leaves with his wife June, who is eight months pregnant. Young Dennis Sanders will take over as the pastor at Mount Pleasant, but not before more hilarious and touching stories, and two dozen toe-tapping Bluegrass Gospel favor-ites. Price of $60 includes buffet lunch, table seating, and refreshments during the drive home.

Columbus Architectural Tour Wednesday, August 12, Departs 8:30 AM This guided bus tour shows many of the more than 70 notable buildings and public art installations created by the likes of Eero Saarinen, Harry Weese, Kevin Roche, I.M. Pei, Henry Moore, and Dale Chihuly. Discover how a city of 45,000 became the home to so much world-class architecture and public art. Find out why the American Institute of Architects ranked Columbus sixth in the nation for innovation and design, right up there with San Francisco and Bos-ton. Discover why National Geographic Traveler put Columbus at the very top of its list of United States historic desti-nations. After lunch at Joe Willie’s Burger Bar, we will visit Cummins Corporate Headquarters Museum, The Com-mons, and the Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans. Before we leave town, we will stop for an ice cream treat at Zaharakos, the elegantly-restored 1900-style ice cream parlor and museum named "The Number One Thing Every Hoosier Must Do" by Indianapolis Monthly magazine. Price of $40 includes tours and refreshments on the bus; lunch and ice cream is charged back.

Mystery Trip Wednesday, August 26, Departs 7:30 AM Meadowood mystery trips are very popular and nearly always filled to capacity. The destination is disclosed only when we arrive at the first stop – or when someone makes a correct guess upon receipt of clues along the way! At the moment, the price is also a mystery, but sign up anyway – it is fair to say you don’t want to miss this!

Dunes, Dome & Dessert Overnight September 23-24 We will start the day near Chesterton at Dunes Nature Preserve located in Indiana Dunes State Park. Take a guided tour through the preserve and learn how dunes are formed and what makes this landscape so unique to Indiana. En-joy the beauty and splendor of the International Friendship Gardens. Begun in 1934 at the Chicago World’s Fair, this collection of flora is representative of gardens from around the world. Day two will find us in South Bend at the Uni-versity of Notre Dame, home of the world famous Fighting Irish. Tour offers a historical overview of campus life and includes highlights such as Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the “Golden Dome,” and “Touchdown Jesus”. We will visit the South Bend Chocolate Company Factory and Museum. Take the “Inside Scoop” tour of the museum and see one of the world’s largest chocolate collections. You’ll also get a taste or two!
