capogiro

Capogiro is always a hub of activity. The most coveted tables are thoseby the large windows - perfect for an afternoon of SABSing. The clienteleis a mixture of Penn students doing work alone, Penn students doingwork together, Penn students hanging out together, and Penn studentshaving coffee chats for OCR. When graced by sunny weather, theoutdoor seating is the prime spot to enjoy their affogato (gelatodrowned in an espresso shot). Disclaimer: we are obviously biasedtowards coffee-based desserts.

pétrus ky

I would describe Pétrus Ky as similar to former United State presidentWarren G. Harding in one major way: most people know absolutelynothing about Warren G. Harding. But unlike Warren G. Harding, addingPétrus Ky to your life might be the right choice. The space is simple andunderstated, with dimmed lights and a quiet, open space. There is an airof mellowness that prompts whispers for no particular reason. This makesPétrus Ky a gem for anyone looking to focus on work or get some alonetime away from the hustle and bustle of main campus.

green line

Formerly known as Lovers and Madmen, Green Line’s latest locationcontinues to be a favorite spot for students to take a slight breather alittle further from campus. Its décor is charmingly diverse. Largewooden windows transition to a lime green painted bar which morphsagain to brighter colorful seats in the back. Its strange aesthetic seemsto be indicative of its clientele. The cafe is populated by hipsters, hipster wannabes and the occasional Penn kid seeking that vibe. Bewarned, you might get a dollop of sass with that cup of coffee.

under commons

Calling a Frappuccino anything other than a coffee-flavored milkshake islike calling Starbucks Under Commons anything other than a study space. That’s not to say we have anything against Frappuccinos—they aredelicious, but just don’t call them coffee. If you are going for a classiccoffee shop feel, this is the wrong place to go. But if you are looking for arelaxed place with a pleasantly warm aesthetic to work with friends,Starbuck Under Commons has the added benefit of some caffeinatedliquids.

avril 50

Avril 50 is not your normal coffee shop. Some wouldunderstandably claim that, while it sells coffee, this quirky littleboutique is not a coffee shop at all. Besides coffee, Avril 50 sellsinternational newspapers, chocolate, and tobacco products. There is no seating in the store, as it is crammed full of its variouswares. While it does not boast a varied menu or nice area tolinger, Avril 50 is certainly unique and charming in its own vaguelyEuropean way.

joe

A coffee shop chain that feels nothing like a coffee shop chain, Joe isa crowd favorite for the Coffee Club. While slightly out of the way fora Penn student, Joe is more than worth the walk. The space iswelcoming and always busy, filled with diverse clientele that loyallyreturn for the energy, branding, pleasant space, and consistentlystellar coffee.

hubbub

Known for good coffee and better SABSing, Hubbub is a hub formeetings, interviews, coffee dates, and studying. The atmosphere istense, full of put together Wharton-types, and most patrons seem to bethere for a reason beyond a cup of coffee. But regardless of whether youare at Hubbub to cram for a midterm or finally grab coffee with thatacquaintance you keep running into on Locust, you know there is apremium for a coveted seat in this popular cafe that has nothing to dowith the quality of the coffee.

Coffee is often associated with flannel-bodied, beanie-headed, WarbyParker-lensed hipsters. Cognizant of this trend, United By Blue doesnot just sell coffee. It sells the idealized lifestyle of coffee drinkers. Ourfavorite cafe on the main campus, they serve a mean espresso. Thewood accented, environmentally friendly-themed coffee shop alsodoubles as a high-end apparel store. A percentage of sales arepromised to a charity that promotes ocean cleanliness , which soundsalmost as good as the music selection of the store’s friendly employees. You can never listen to too much Tame Impala.

saxby’s

For some Saxby’s is reminiscent of memories past. For others itrepresents the new ‘hip’ place to be, because Starbucks is toomainstream, Green Line is too far and Capogiro is, well, Capo. Therenovation of Saxby’s last winter brought mixed emotions to campus. The colorful, nostalgic interior has been replaced by a modern, almoststerile whitewash. The revamped Saxby’s definitely caters to students, offering a spacious interior and chill music. It’s a great alternative studylocation - just don’t have high expectations for the coffee.
