    INTRODUCTION

    National university of management science (NUMS) has played amajor role in developing learning and research that would providestudents, wishing to study in the private sector with a wider choice.

    Not only a wider choice, but excellence in learning, teaching andresearch has always been one of the main objectives of theUniversity.

    This is why, National university of management science (NUMS) hasbecome one of the best institutions of higher education in Pakistan.Accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council, Pakistan Medicaland Dental Council and The Pharmacy Council of Pakistan, theUniversity has also been able to achieve the highest ranking i.e. Wranking with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.

    The University is ranked among the top 500 universities of the world(QS & Times Higher Education Supplement). We continue to be atthe forefront of world research, and continue to strive to produceexcellent graduates in Arts, Business, Biology, Dentistry,Engineering, Information Technology, Language & Literature, SocialSciences, Pharmacy and Medicine.

    National university of management science (NUMS) researchprogrammes span many different industries. Our commercialisationapproach to research allows for research to be put into practice,

    with launching of projects that would help generate interest in thework we do and fund future projects.

    Once of the latest projects has been launched under the trademarkof Lifesafe, which allows for the storage of stem cells from theUmbilical Cord Blood. In the second stage of the project theUniversity aims to launch Pakistans first Stem Cells, testing,processing and storage laboratory.

    We work in partnership with leading organisations to allow us toachieve benchmarks that are commercially and academically viable.

    We encourage students and staff to get involved in all researchprojects.

    The information technology revolution has helped tremendously inbringing the world closer to the level of a global village. Under the

    circumstances, not a single nation can live in isolation. Every nationhas to play its role in the well being and uplift of the globalcommunity.

    In order to fulfill our responsibilities we have to work objectivelytowards achieving excellence in all spheres of human interactions.This demands giving up our present lethargy and hibernation andadopting high standards of discipline, efficiency, professionalismand integrity at all levels.

    We cannot safeguard our national interests unless we change our

    social conduct and attitude. The present level of our society is adirect out come of our poor human conduct, intolerance, injustice,inequity, incompetent and selfish leadership and lack of foresight onpart of those running the state machinery. To this end we have tofollow and practice the sacred injunctions in their true spirit, and notmerely practice rituals and traditions, in all conceivable humaninteractions.

    It goes without saying that educational institutions provide avenuesfor foremost social interactions and the university being the highestseats of learning do play its role to produce not only skilledworkforce and high quality professionals for the state machinery butalso dedicated and selfless leadership capable of moulding destinyof the nation.

    In order to assess the progress of the university regarding itsfunctions on providence of services and achievement of its mission,the Annual Report has been prepared not only as a statutoryreqirement but to factually highlight its strengths and weaknesses inorder to review its policies for optimal performance and for setting afuture direction accordingly.

    The Annual Report for the academic Session 2007-08 provide a truepicture of all the activities undertaken. The report may serve as aguiding post in formulating strategies for the future.

    Let me invoke that preparation and presentation of Annual Report isa statutory requirement and must be taken seriously in providingcorrect and relevant information in time.

    In the end, I pray for strength and farsight to work whole heartedlywith full devotion and concentration to elevate this Alma matter to a

    world Class University.

    Executive Summary

    National University of management science strives to be a

    prominent public sector university in the region recognized for itsglobal perspective, diverse and supportive learning environment,having international reputation in research and creative discoveryand emphasis on leadership development. The University pursues apolicy of providing access to quality education relevant to thedemands of the society.

    During the year, the enrollment of the University was 102,333,including 75,758 at graduate, 25,971 at post-graduate, 445 atM.Phil. and 159 at Ph.D. level. Besides, the University also caters tothe needs of private students, who for some reasons do not make itto the University as regular students.

    To provide quality education, the faculty development programmeof the university provides opportunities to the faculty members forenhancement of their qualifications through M.Phil. and Ph.D.programmes both at national and international institutions.

    The faculty is also encouraged to develop knowledge repositories inthe form of local, national and international research publications.The faculty has published 13 refreed journals, 19 books and 131

    publications. Besides, the faculty has been involved in organizingand participation in 262 conferences, seminars and workshops bothat national and international level.

    Teachers research projects, to the tune of Rs. 2.752 million werefunded from Universitys budget and Rs. 3.631 million by HEC. Apartfrom that the HEC has provided a total of Rs. 7.974 million formiscellaneous academic activities.

    Financial support to the tune of Rs. 28.409 million was extended to1820 students of the University by the District Zakat Committees,

    Political Agents, Higher Education Commission and NationalUniversity of management science.

    Directorate of Sports remained actively engaged in Sports activities.The University teams not only took part in various local and nationalgames but the Directorate of Sports in collaboration with HECorganized several sports events on local, provincial and nationallevel wherein numerous distinctions were achieved by theUniversity.

    Student societies are the principal vehicles through which thevarious activities on the campus are triggered off in order to give

    vent to the student feelings and enhance the vision of the youth innation building process. All the twelve societies in year roundactivities pursued their assigned objectives.

    The University assessed 102,333 students/candidates at Bachelor,

    Master and Professional level examinations in 2009-10.

    The Directorate of Works completed 33 minor civil works at a cost ofRs. 4.515 m whereas 17 works are in progress at a cost of Rs. 8.372m and 14 works are tendered at a cost of Rs. 3.782 million.

    During the year development projects worth Rs. 72.388 million havebeen completed, while projects worth Rs. 1228.532 million are ongoing and new proposals worth Rs. 687.55 million are underprocess.

    The Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) is actively pursuing selfassessment programme through a mechanism as per HECguidelines. Recently institutional assessment was carried outaccording to the model provided by the HEC. National University ofmanagement science secured A Grade according to that model. TheQEC also check Research Publications and Thesis to forestallplagiarism through HEC sponsored software called iThenticate. Inthe current session a total of 260 cases were checked and okayed.

    The Library Staff imparted training to the faculty staff on InternetSurfing and Exploring Digital Library and Online Resources. Also oneBooks Exhibition in collaboration with Asia Foundation and the otheron Quaid-i-Azam and Pakistan was arranged. Moreover, a largenumber of seminars and lectures series were arranged under theauspices of USEF for Pakistan.

    VALUE PROPOSITION

    Subsequent to the elevation of Faculties of Agriculture, Engineeringand Medicine to full-fledged universities in early Eighties, theconstituent instituions of the University were re-organized and re-

    constituted in 2003. At present the NUMS comprises faculties are:

    Hostel AccommodationHostel accommodation is provided to about 1000 students in fivehostels four for men and one for woman. There are about 100 roomsand one common room in each hostel with ample facilities for indoorgames. Research students are encouraged to stay in hostel. Thecost of living in hostel is low as it is heavily subdivided by theuniversity.A provost senior wardens and resident wardens managethe affairs of hostels. A large cafeteria adjacent to the hostelsprovides breakfast lunch and dinner at subsidized rate.

    Transport: The university has its own fleet of buses and other transportvehicles. The buses ply between the campus and major locations inRawalpindi and Islamabad to provide transportation to students andstaff on concessional rates. A shuttle service runs between campusand abpara at regular intervals. Private wagons also ply frequentlybetween the campus and abpara.Health care:A health center with the resident senior medical officer, a lady

    medical officer and a full-time medical unit provides medical care oncampus during working hours. Its Para medical staff attends to stickstudents round the clock. And emergency cases are sent totreatment to Federal Government Services Hospital and Pakistaninstitute of medical sciences.Cafeteria and shops:A cafeteria located near the administration block and the bus park,provides meals, tea and cold drinks. Some of the departments havetheir own teashops, which provide snacks during working hours. Autility store is located on campus where groceries and essentialitems of stationary are available. A number of private shops also

    provide refreshments and food at reasonable rates.Mosque:The university mosque is located near cafeteria, close to hostels.Telephone, Telegraph and postal services: A public call office islocated in the cafeteria building, which accepts out-going telegramsand provides long distance telephone facility. A proposal to setupcentral telephone facility in the university in hand. There is also postoffice in the administration block.Photocopying:Photocopying facility is available on campus for students and staff

    at reasonable rates. It is located in many buildings and also incentral library.

    Bank: The habib bank branch is located on campus which providesbanking facility to teachers, students and employees.Sports: The university provides facilities to the student for outdoor an

    indoor games under the supervision of the sports committee whichalso arranges interdepartmental tournaments and friendly matcheswith other universities and colleges.At present, facilities are available for table tennis, basketball,football, badminton and athletics. Students participate in thesegames with keen interest. The university plans to provide facilitiesfor hockey, squash, gymnastics and other games in future.
