Open-Minded We are one of the youngest universities in Germany and have a fresh way of looking at things. We think in terms of unlimited possibilities instead of possible limitations. Located in the heart of the Ruhr metropolis, we have 11 faculties working to develop ideas with a future. We are strong on research and teaching, embrace diversity, promote academic potential and fight for genuine educational equality.

3 Asian Majors BA MOAS – moderne Ostasienwissenschaften About 60 students will learn in 8 semester one Asian language (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) plus one discipline (Politics/Economics/Sociology). Compulsory is to study one year in China or Japan. MA CEAS – Contemporary East Asia Studies The four semester long CEAS program aims to train students in the theoretical and problem-centered analysis of social, political and economic phenomena in East Asia. The program’s objective is to deepen and enrich the students’ ability to assess contemporary change, the challenges for the East Asian region and the implications of such developments for Europe. MA MEAS – Modern East Asia Studies The two semester long MEAS program is an English-taught degree program with a social scientific, contemporary and interdisciplinary profile. The program offers research-focused training for highly qualified graduates with a BA or similar university degrees in Political Sciences, International Relations, Sociology or Economics.
IN-EAST Advanced School (PhD Program) Focusing on innovation across East Asia, the IN-EAST School of Advanced Studies – funded by a grant of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) – integrates the core IN-EAST disciplines (political science, economics, and sociology) with engineering and cultural studies in six research teams. The general scope of the Advanced School’s research agenda is to explore how processes of innovation pervade society as a whole. Research activities converge on electric mobility and urban systems as inherently interdependent topics of comprehensive innovation processes in society.
The Research Training Group Risk & East Asia (PhD
Program) offers doctoral-level training and post-doctoral
research opportunities in contemporary economic and
social scientific East Asian Studies. A key feature of the
research training group is the collaboration between
doctoral and post-doctoral fellows and senior
participating scientists in a joint research program about
the governance of risks triggered by Asian responses to
global economic, political and social change. Our areas of
expertise include Chinese Economy, Chinese and
Japanese Politics, Japanese and Korean Economy
and Japanese Society.
The IN-EAST Welcome Office
offers a range of services to our exchange students from China, Japan and Korea:
We have put together all relevant information in preparation of your stay in your own language.
We prepared guidelines in each language on how to make an online reservation for a room in one of the dormitories.
We put together your personal learning agreement so that you know where and when your courses will take place.
Before you arrive in Germany, we assign a German student to you as your ‘buddy’. He or she will help you find the way to your dormitory and do the necessary paperwork, register with local authorities, enrol at the University and get your student ID, open a bank account, get internet access etc.
We also bring together overseas and German students for language learning (“tandem partnerships”) and exchange on all aspects of studying abroad.
We work closely with people at your university’s International Office in order to ensure that your stay in Germany is not only instructive but problem-free.
