Situated on the Spanish Mediterranean Coast, the city of Valencia was founded

by the romans on the banks of the Turia river in 138 B.C.

Valencia ranks third in Spain by its administrative importance and by

population, with more than 800.000 inhabitants in the city and approximately

1.800.000 in the surrounding metropolitan area.

The climate in the city is one of the mildest in Europe: it enjoys a

Mediterranean climate with an average temperature of above 17º, with hot

summers and moderate winters.

Important cultural institutions, such as City of Arts and Sciences, has an intense

cultural life and historical heritage. Valencia’s traditional festival is “Las Fallas”,

which is associated with fire and fireworks. Its traditional dish “paella” is known

worldwide. Valencia host important international sport events (F1 Valencia

Street Circuit, MotoGP Grand Prix and was the site of the 2007 America’s Cup)

Over five centuries of history

The Universitat de València is the outcome of

more than five centuries of history that have

led to the accumulation of knowledge and

unique documentary treasures, making it one

of the top Spanish universities.

In the 13th century, higher education was

establish in the city of Valencia, obtaining in

1245 a Studium Generale institution from

Pope Innocent IV. However, not until 1499 did

the Juries of Valencia draw up the

Constitucions of what was to become the

first Universitat de València, authorized by the

Pope Alexander VI Bull on 1501 and the

royal privilege of Ferdinand II the Catholic

on 1502.

For more than 500 years, the development of the Universitat de València has

run in parallel with the development of the city and has been an inextricable

part of its urban fabric, creating spaces for teaching, research, creation and

dissemination of culture and science as well as knowledge transfer.

Cultural activities

The Universitat de Valencia’s commitment to culture is represented especially in the ongoing programming of its own temporary exhibitions of the Universitat de València held in the Cultural Centre La Nau and exhibition halls located in Ceveró Palace, the Botanic Garden and the Rector Peset Hall of Residence.

The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universitat de València was created in 1995. Made up of more than 70 musicians with an average age of 20, it seeks to bring together diverse musical groups organised by university students.

The Drama Club and the Theatre Group, with the educational objective of the performing arts and theatre entertainment, seek to create a discerning audience.

Within the internationalisation process, the Universitat de València has set up a theatre project called Escena Erasmus,

SportsSports are part of the essence of the Universitat de València: from the standpoint of teaching and research, as well as from the recreational, educational, competitive and health perspectives.

Facilities at its three campuses. These modern facilities help to carry out the Universitat’s sports objectives: sports training, sports participation and competition.

Courses and activities enable users of the sports services to have access to all sports and recreational activities.

Sustainability

Commitment by the university community has

helped generate a 15% reduction of energy

consumption in a single year. Moreover, the

Universitat de València has the most powerful solar

energy park in Spain, thus contributing to the

generation of clean energy.

Cooperation

University cooperation is wide reaching and covers various types of action: Aacademic stays for teachers to carry out training programmes in developing countries as is the case of PhD programmes taught in Central America;

Establishing centres such as the Optical Centres in Havana and Santiago, the Health Center in El Salvador University and the Valencia Law Library in Bolivia.

Support for students from emerging countries provides access to higher education at the Universitat de València. This is one of the priorities of the Universitat, which offers scholarships for this purpose.

Universitat de València has been recognized

as an International Campus of Excellence by

the Ministry of Education. Two programs have

received this award:

• VLC/Campus, a joint project with Technical

University of Valencia and the Spanish

National Research Council (CSIC)

• CAMPUSHÀBITAT5U, developed with the 5

public universities in the Valencian region.

Campus of International Excellence within the metropolitan area of Valencia which aims to:

• Convert the VLC/CAMPUS into a hub of knowledge of international excellence, through specialization of scientific and technological production in health, sustainability information and communication.

Research Results

According to various rankings, the Universitat places third or fourth among Spanish universities.

The Universitat de València ranks second among Spanish universities in citation of its scientific output and third in raising funds for research and scientific publications according to La Universidad Española en Cifras (The Spanish University in Numbers), a report published by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE).

The Ibero-American ranking SIR lists the Universitat among the top 15 Ibero-American research institutions, whereas the Third European Report on Science & Technology Indicators by the European Commission classifies the Universitat de València as the top-ranking university in collaborative publications.

The Institute of Scientific Information confirms that the Universitat de València is a first-class research centre and specifically highlights its contributions in Chemistry, Physics, Neuroscience, Biology and Biochemistry, Microbiology, Plant and Animal Sciences, Pharmacology, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Materials Science and Agricultural Science.

More than 1.400 scientists and technologists from the University of Valencia and from the 70 companies located in the Scientific Park, 9 of which are university spin-off .
