The Olmec Culture, “mother culture of the Americas”, flourished in Veracruz.With the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, it became a melting pot ofcontinental America, enriched by a blend of Indigenous, European and Afro-Caribbean influences, vibrantly evident in its architecture, cuisine and music.

Challenged by high rates of unemployment,poverty, out-migration, illiteracy, inequality anddiscrimination in public affairs and lack accessto health services.

Research has demonstrated that:• 75% of indigenous students’ families live on a

monthly income lower than $250 USD;• 60% of students live at home and support

family incomes in agricultural activities .• Indigenous students are interested in the future

economic and cultural development of theirregions, but recognize the lack of opportunities.
