OrdinalOrdinal NumbersNumbers
When we place objects in order, we use ordinal ordinal numbersnumbers to tell their position. Ordinal numbers are similar to cardinal numbers but they are given an ending: ‘th’ and some of them have changes. Look:
four - fourth eleven – eleventh but… one - first
two - second three - third
five - fifth eight - eighth
nine - ninth twelve - twelfth
In compound ordinal numbers, note that only the last figure is written as an ordinal number:
421st = four hundred and twenty-first 5,111th = five thousand, one hundred and eleventh
11 stst first 1111 thth eleventh 2121 stst twenty-first 3131 stst thirty-first
22 ndnd second 1212 thth twelfth 2222 ndnd twenty-second 4040 thth fortieth
33 rdrd third 1313 thth thirteenth 2323 rdrd twenty-third 5050 thth fiftieth
44 thth fourth 1414 thth fourteenth 2424 thth twenty-fourth 6060 thth sixtieth
55 thth fifth 1515 thth fifteenth 2525 thth twenty-fifth 7070 thth seventieth
66 thth sixth 1616 thth sixteenth 2626 thth twenty-sixth 8080 thth eightieth
77 thth seventh
1717 thth seventeenth
2727 thth twenty-seventh 9090 thth ninetieth
88 thth eighth 1818 thth eighteenth 2828 thth twenty-eighth 101000
thth one hundredth
99 thth ninth 1919 thth nineteenth 2929 thth twenty-ninth 1,0001,000 thth one thousandth
1010 thth tenth 2020 thth twentieth 3030 thth thirtieth 1,000,0001,000,000 thth one millionth

DatesDates
In English we express dates in different ways. Thus, we have differences when writing dates. Look:
In British EnglishBritish English the day is usually put before the month. If you wish, you can add the ending of the ordinal number. You can put a comma before the year, but this is not common anymore in British English.
Example: 5(th) October(,) 2004
In American EnglishAmerican English the month is usually put before the day. If you wish, you can put the definite article before the day. It is common to write a comma before the year.
Example: October (the) 5(th), 2004
You can also write the date by using numbers only. The most common forms are:
Example: 5/10/04 or 5-10-04
Now, notice how we read or say dates:
If you put the day before the month, use the definite article
before the day and the preposition of of before the month.
So, if we have the date: 5 October 2004 , we read it like this: the fifth of October, two thousand and four
If you put the month before the day, use the definite article before the day in British English. In American English, the definite article can be dropped.
So we read October 5, 2004 as October (the) fifth, two thousand and four.
