I am happy to see our Sec 1 Unitians are settling in

well. Their excitement and lively chatters indicate

that they are embracing this new phase of their

educational learning journey in Unity Secondary

School. I am also happy to observe that our sec 2,

3, 4 & 5 students are ready to start the academic

year with skills and values imbibed in them during

the Leadership Learning Week.

I am pleased to share the good performance of our

sec 4 & 5 students in the 2018 GCE ‘O’ Level

Examinations. For the Sec 4Exp, 95.5% achieved 5 or

more ‘O’ level passes and 98.1% are eligible for

Polytechnics / A-Level course. 87.2% of our Sec 5N

students had 3 or more ‘O’ Level passes, with 61.7%

eligible for Polytechnics/A-Level Course.

“In order to help

our students to

master the 4Cs,

we encourage all

students to read.”

In order to help our students to master the 4Cs

(critical and creative thinking, collaboration and

communication skills), we encourage all

students to read during our school-wide Reading

Programme, which was embarked on in 2018.

The programme continues this year, and I am

pleased to share that our students responded

very well to our thrice a week, twenty minutes of

uninterrupted silent reading in the morning. The

Reading Programme is the school’s effort to instill

the reading habit in our students. We hope to

develop every Unitian to be an engaged, critical

and informed reader who enjoys sharing and

discussing reading content and materials with

others. We also hope that parents will partner the

school in constantly encouraging their children

to read. Do log on to our Instagram,

@ReadUSSWidely, which was just launched in

February, for updates on what our Unitians are

reading.

“Growth Mindset

is the belief that

one is in control

of one’s ability

and can learn and

improve.”

In our efforts to develop Unitians to be Resilient

and Future-ready, one of our key efforts is to instill

the Growth Mindset in every Unitian. Research

has shown that having a growth mindset (the

belief that one is in control of one’s ability, and

can learn and improve) is the key to future

success. Yes, I agree that commitment and

perseverance are important, but not as

important as having that underlying belief that

one is in control of one’s own destiny. The school

has embarked on a whole school approach to

instill Growth Mindset in every Unitian. Parents

have been briefed at Parents’ Briefings, on

Growth Mindset and how they, too, can instill it

in their children.

In Student Leadership, I am pleased to share that

Victoria Wong Xuan Ting, of Sec 3E3, is the 3rd

elected President of the Unity Council, and Tan

Xin Yi, Nicole of Sec 3E1, the Vice-President. They

had to go through a rigorous and stringent

selection process, before a campaign round

and an election process that involved the

students and teachers, to be eligible for the

topmost positions in the Unity Council. I am

confident of their leadership abilities in leading

the Unity Council to serve the school and

community.

The 9th Unity Councillors have been formally

appointed on 1 March 2019, marking a

milestone in their journey of development to be

a leader of teams and leader of leaders.

I would like to record our appreciation for Nur

Insyirah bte Aidil of Sec 4E3 (President) and Chin

Sikang Kyler of Sec 4E1 (Vice-President) and the

8th Unity Council for the quality leadership

provided to the Unity Community. I wish them

success in their GCE Examinations and hope

they would continue to lead and serve others in

their onward journey.

I would like to share some of our latest CCA

achievements. In the 2018 Overall Unit Proficiency

Awards for Uniformed Groups, our NCC (Air),

Girls’ Brigade and Scouts have sustained their Gold

Award for another year. While our NPCC has

achieved the Silver Award.

In Sports, our Volleyball (Girls) team played very well

to clinch 4th position in the West Zone ‘B’ Division

Volleyball Championships, and qualified for the

National rounds for the first time in our school’s

history! Well-done girls.

In Basketball, both our ‘B’ Division Boys’ and Girls’

teams were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the

West Zone Basketball Championship and qualified

for the National rounds starting in Term 2.

I applaud the good work of many Unitians in

supporting school activities in Term 1 such as Sec 1

Orientation, CCA Open House, commemoration of

Total Defence Day, Chinese New Year celebrations,

West Zone School Games and the annual Unity Run.

The students have demonstrated the values of

Commitment and Perseverance and have lived up

to the school motto in leading themselves, serving

others and actualizing their potential

I would like to honour our team of dedicated

teachers for their belief in the students and for their

care and efforts in developing and nurturing the

students to achieve their best.

I would like to extend my appreciation to parents,

members of the School Advisory Committee and

Alumni for partnering us in our endeavor to develop

Unitians to be resilient and future-ready, with the

passion to serve and lead. We will continue to

inspire our students to learn and grow and bring out

the best in them.

Wishing everyone a restful March holidays!

2.3 English Department Initiatives

To support our students in their appreciation and learning of the English Language, the EL Department

has in place a series of activities that will engage and enrich their school experience.

2.3.1 Unity Young Writers Festival 2019 (UWF)

This year, Unity once again brings together schools from all over Singapore in a festival that celebrates

and nurtures Singapore’s nascent voices; to empower and inspire youths to articulate their visions and

views of the world through literary arts. A total of 28 secondary schools participated in this two-day

festival. Day 1 of the festival held on 25th January consisted of workshops by renowned local artists such

as Alvin Pang, Marc Nair, Charlene Shepherdson, Jollin Tan and Jennifer Anne Champion to help our

youth poets find their voice and inspiration following which students would submit a piece of original

poetry for the poetry competition.

Day 2 of the festival will be held on the 24th May at Woodlands Regional Library where our panel of

esteemed judges, comprising of Alvin Pang, Daryl Yam, and Charlene Shepherdson will bring UWF to a

close with a dialogue session and announcement of the winners of the poetry competition.

2.3.2 Literature Learning Journeys

The lower secondary Literature students went on a learning journey to the National Museum to learn

more about Singapore’s history and to deepen their understanding of the effects of war on people as

well as to apply their takeaways from literature lessons regarding the Holocaust.

Meanwhile, the upper secondary Literature students watched Off Centre, a play by the highly

acclaimed local playwright Haresh Sharma. The play is a quintessential Singapore text that offers a

critical commentary on Singapore society and the human heart & mind, aimed to deepen students’

critical perspectives and analysis.

2.3.3 Reading Programme

29th Jan 2019 saw our first Book Buzz for the year by National Library Board. To tie in with the "Books to

Go" sessions held on 29th and 30th January 2019, Miss Johanna Chia of National Library Board shared

two exciting reads with our Unitians during the morning assembly on 29th Jan 2019.

The books shared were: The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee (Fantasy) The Extinction Trials by S.M.

Wilson (Sci-Fi)

Copies of the books were snapped up quickly by our avid readers in Unity Secondary within minutes after

the "Books to Go" booths were set up. Let us look forward to another session of Book Buzz as well as the

"Books to Go" dates come Semester 2!

2.3.4 Secondary Three Learning Journey to the Singapore Discovery Centre

To commemorate Total Defence Day, the English Department organised a learning journey to Singapore

Discovery Centre for all Secondary Three students on 20 and 21 February. This is part of the department’s

efforts to bring experiential learning to students as they learn proposal writing. In their groups, they would

have to make suggestions to improve their learning experience. It is certainly a great opportunity for

them to apply what they have learnt in the classroom to the real world context. Students also get the

opportunity to take a guided tour round SAFTI Military Institute!

2.3.5 Words Go Round 2019

Unity Secondary School hosted 2019 Words Go Round, in collaboration with the outreach branch of

Singapore Writer's Festival, which brings literary events to the public. This year, we were honoured to have

Professor Philip Holden, a scholar in Singapore and Southeast Asian Literature to give a talk on code-

switching in local literary scene.

All Upper Secondary Pure Literature students as well as interested Secondary 2 Express students had the

opportunity to attend this talk. Students from Maris Stella High School, Anglican High, Cedar Girls, Bukit

Batok Secondary and Hua Yi Secondary were here for the talk too! Look at how engaged the students

were!

2.3.6 EL Instagram (IG) Page @ReadUSSWidely

Ever wondered what our students and teachers are reading at this moment? Want to get some updates

into the English Department’s activities and events? The EL department has launched its IG page,

ReadUSSWidely! This IG page is aimed at encouraging good English habits and also promote reading

amongst our Unitians, as well as provide a platform for our students and staff to express their love for the

language via books sharing, profiles of their favourite authors and lessons learnt from reading their books!

So do give us a follow @ReadUSSWidely!

3.3 Cyber Wellness Reminder for Students and Parents

With the school holidays approaching, many students may increase their use of the Internet for learning

and recreation. As responsible digital learners, it is important to practise the 3 Cyber Wellness principles:

1. Respect self and others

2. Be safe and responsible

3. Be a positive peer influence

These principles serve to guide your child on how to behave online. The third principle, ‘Positive Peer

Influence’, reminds them to role model positive online habits and to look out for friends who may not be

practising them. Here are some tips on how your child can be a positive role model online:

o Share healthy and positive content online

o Post positive comments online

o Be an upstander for friends who are cyber bullied

o Use technology for good

We hope your child will play their part to make the Internet a better place not just for themselves, but for

others too!

A tip sheet on Helping Your Child Stay Safe Online is also attached in ANNEX B for parents to not only

increase their awareness on helping their child to practice being a Leader of Self by understanding the

dangers of Cyber threats, but also gain knowledge on how you can help them to avoid those threats.

Thank you for your active participation and parenting to reinforce Cyber Wellness at home.

4.2 Holistic Health Education

Healthy Weight For Your Height Using Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure used to determine whether you're at a healthy weight for your height.

You can calculate your BMI using the formula below:

BMI =Weight (kg)

Height (m) × Height (m)

Use the table below to determine which risk category you are at:

BMI (kg/m) for Adults above 18 years old Health Risk

27.5 and above High Risk

23.0 - 27.4 Moderate Risk

18.5 - 22.9 Low Risk (Healthy Range)

Less than18.5 Risk of nutritional deficiency diseases and

osteoporosis

If your BMI is 23 kg/m2and above, you are at a higher risk of weight-related health problems such as

Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, certain types of cancer and bone and joint

disorders.

However, the BMI may not reliably predict health risk in pregnant women and people with muscular build.

How can you achieve a healthy BMI weight range?

If your BMI is 23 kg/m2and above, it is important that you lose some weight to reduce your risk of weight-

related chronic diseases. There is no short-cut to reducing your BMI to the healthy range. To lose weight,

you need to make sustainable changes to your eating and exercise habits.

Concept of energy balance

Our body uses energy/calories from food and these calories come from carbohydrates, protein and fat.

When you consistently consume more calories than the amount you use for physical activity, you will tend

to gain weight. There may be days where you will not be able to strike a balance between calorie intake

and calorie output. This does not mean that you will put on weight immediately. It is the balance over time

that determines whether you can maintain your weight in the long run. Hence understanding how to

balance your energy is the key to managing your weight successfully.

17

Unity

Secondary

School

Volume 20 | Issue #02 | 15 March 2019

So Remember...

1. A BMI of 23 kg/m2and above indicates that you are at risk of weight-related chronic diseases, and

you should start to eat more healthily and increase your activity level to lose weight.

2. Strike a balance by being mindful of what you eat and how much you eat and by doing regular

physical activity. This is the key to managing your weight successfully. You do not have to avoid social

occasions.

3. Just keep the basic principles in mind; space out your intake of food, watch your portion sizes and

go for healthier choices.

Strategic Thrust 5: Strong Organisational Capabilities, Effective Administration We develop strong organisational capabilities and effective administration to support students’

and staff development

5.1 Updating of parents’ contact details and commuting status

As it is important for the school to have the updated contact details of all parents, it would be appreciated

if parents could inform the school of any changes to their contact details promptly. Also, if you child is

commuting to school daily or weekly (eg; coming to school from Johor), please update the school

promptly as this information is critical as part of our emergency preparedness.

5.2 Safety Updates

5.2.1 Medical Status Updates

Please update the school promptly when there is a change in the medical status of your child. This

information is critical so as to ensure that extra care and support can be rendered to your child when

needed. Also, if your child is suffering from any medical conditions, do remind your child to have their

medication with them at all times, for example, inhalers if they are asthmatic.

5.3 Emergency Preparedness

5.3.1 SGSecure - “BE PREPARED. OUR RESPONSE MATTERS.”

Global terrorism is on the rise and Singapore is facing our highest level of terror threat in recent years. A

terror attack is not a matter of if but when, and we cannot afford to remain complacent. The Home Team

has been stepping up our fight against terrorism and more resources have been committed to

strengthening our security forces. But the Government's effort alone is not enough. To safeguard our way

of life, everyone has to play a part. The SGSecure national movement is Singapore's community response

to the threat of terror. It aims to sensitise, train, and mobilise our community to prevent and deal with a

terror attack.

Every one of us can do our part by doing the following:

Stay Alert (Community Vigilance)

o Keep a look out for and report any security threat.

o Remain vigilant after an attack.

Stay United (Community Cohesion)

o Build stronger community ties and safeguard Singapore's racial and religious harmony.

o Stand together both in peacetime and after an attack.

Stay Strong (Community Resilience)

o Learn how to protect ourselves and those around us if caught in an attack.

o Help each other to bounce back quickly after any incident.

21

Unity

Secondary

School

Volume 20 | Issue #02 | 15 March 2019

5.3.2 SGSecure Mobile App

Have you downloaded the SGSecure app? The SGSecure app can help you during a terror attack by:

1. Providing you with important alerts during peacetime and in the event of major emergencies,

including the location of an incident.

2. Enabling you to report terror attacks or suspicious behaviour / objects in your neighbourhood to the

emergency authorities in 4 simple steps :

a. Take a photo

b. Describe what happened

c. State location

d. Submit report

3. Allowing you to make emergency calls to the Police and SCDF or alert the Police via SMS (71999) if

it is unsafe to call.

If you have not yet downloaded the SGSecure app, we strongly encourage you to do so, and to

encourage your child and friends to do the same. To learn how to use the SGSecure app, you can access
