Anthony Cobb, an African-American, was announced as the new Police Chief of the City of Champaign. After decades of poor relations between the police department and the African-American community, residents are proud of the decision to hire a native of who understand their concerns. Cobb is a product of Champaign schools.

What got you into Law Enforcement?I had some interest as a child. However, I really took a serious consideration after returning home from West Point. I didn't know a lot about the job, but I always had issues with the police based on others experiences and what I was taught growing up in Champaign. My previous perspective was that they would chase down & beat-up black people and put them in jail; I wanted to change this. What I learned from West Point, was that it is best to change a system from within. So, I saw becoming an officer as a great opportunity to improve our police force.

At that time both cities were testing. When it was time to test in Champaign, I made a poor decision to go out the night before my test. Never the less I learned my lesson and when the Urbana test came around I did my best and scored in the top 10% out of over 300 applicants.

I started in street patrol as a community officer. I got to spend 3 years working with other law enforcement to figure out non-traditional ways of conducting law enforcement. In my unit I started officers on permanent beats of at least 2 years, which helped officers connect with the people in their community and the people to connect with them. At first, other offices laughed at me they said, I didn't arrest anyone just shook hands. But after leading the department with the best statistics they decided to implement permanent beats city wide.

I care how the people in Champaign are treated, my family and friends are here- this is my community.

How did your mom motivate you?As a single mother of 5 boys my mom instilled in me fear! She did not accept mediocrity. No C's, no half way job- only your best.

In each issue of Unity in Action Magazine we want to give you a chance to share your voice to help continue the positive growth of our nation. What change do you think we need to improve our nation/community?

Ethics in Politics:We must restore ethics, integrity, and trust in politics. I think that politicians that make racist comments, have a history tied to racist groups, or are making decisions support negative racial bias should not be allowed to serve the public.

America is thriving towards our forefathers belief that we are a diverse nation of many cultures, There are no walls between our cities that would allow a public servant to say- no colored allowed. So they have to be able to be fair to all races.

Racial prejudice in the work place is illegal. Politicians are at work. Which leads to another change we need- Wall Street criminals break the law and rob thousands, but don't get the sentencing time that others, like drug offenders do.

Florida is attacking our culture by making it ILLEGAL to sag your pants. I can see them trying to provide community education, encourage parents, support positive rap music; but NOT making it AGAINST THE LAW. More jail/plantation time for black men.

I say this to say that we are at a very high risk of becoming destroyed but, it's not too late for ALL races to come together and unite as one to fix this broken system to save the African-American male from extinction of the economic system.

United we stand, but divided we surely shall fall. And it all starts with being properly educated, not myths or lies. We need to teach about ethnic culture, so that others understand the good nature of African-American people; instead of slavery and dead hero's.

And, finally we need great teachers with proper degrees to be placed and paid at a higher wage. There is no reason that a basketball player or rapper gets paid millions to play a game while our teachers who teach our nation get paid low wages; there is something wrong with that picture.

J. Mogul Thoughts

Education on Black CultureThere is a social economic war and the Black Male is the target! The Black man is destroyed due to lack of knowledge and opportunity- proper education is the key. The traditional American History lessons taught in school is HIS STORY & is written during a time that institutions did not promote black success. So would it be WISE to expect the very ones who seek to destroy YOU to EDUCATE YOU! That's not intelligent. An unbiased education about our culture and more truths in our history lessons is a root need. Black culture is misunderstood, misrepresented, and under attack.

On January 2010, the governor of Arizona passed a bill into law stating that it would be illegal to teach children of color or ethnic children about their culture and traditions stating that instead they are trying to promote solidarity amongst all students. This is a prime example of the attack on our youth thru the education system. Teaching the traditional American history lesson alone is teaching our students to become inferior while at the same time white children are taught that they are superior.

I am sure the thriving hispanic culture understood this, that is why they started teaching culture in the first place. And now Arizona is trying to take it away.

The American EAGLE, the BUFFALO, the LION & last but not least The BLACK MAN all are symbols of strength & freedom. And all have been destroyed, extinct or no longer exist. Just as the eagle has been shot & destroyed so has the Black Man. Just as the buffalo that once roamed freely has been destroyed, so have they tried to do to the Black man. And just as the lion, the King of the Jungle, was removed from his natural habitat and been made into a side show freak at a circus so has the Black Man. Still today the Black Man is at a high risk of being socially and economically destroyed.

CYBER BULLYING AND ITS IMPACT

It can make teenagers hurt both physically and mentally. Some teenagers indicate that they feel embarrassed when the information is revealed and refuse to go to school. In addition research has revealed that cyber bullying brings on to a teenager; low self-esteem, family problems, academic problems, school violence, and delinquent behavior. Finally, cyber bullied youth also report having suicidal thoughts and some were so victimized that they ended up taking their own life.

We as a community must educate, use intervention tools at home, in the community and schools. We must talk to our children daily and by all means keep up with their online behavior and cell phone usage. Champaign-Urbana must step up and take responsibility for responding to inappropriate use of technology.

Kids have been bullying each other for generations. The latest generation, however has been able to utilize technology to expand their reach and the extent of their harm. This phenomenon is being called cyber bullying defined as: “willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones and other electronic devices.”

Cyber-bullying are incidents where adolescents use technology, usually computers or cell phones, to harass, threaten, humiliate, or otherwise hassle their peers. For example, youth can send hurtful text messages to others or spread rumors using cell phones or computers. Teens have also created web pages, videos, profiles on social networking sites making fun of others. With cell phones, adolescents have taken pictures in a bedroom, a bathroom, or another location where privacy is expected, and posted or distributed them online. Some have recorded unauthorized videos for the world to see.

There are so many detrimental outcomes associated with cyber bullying that reach into the real world. First, many targets of cyber bullying report feeling depressed, sad, angry, and frustrated.

We the PeopleObama is Helping You Petition The

Government http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/WeThePeople

President Obama and his Administration has changed the way Americans engage with the President and his team, by launching a new way for you to join with fellow Americans to petition the federal government on a range of issues.

It's called We the People and you can learn more about at WhiteHouse.gov.

President Obama believes that government should be open and accountable to its citizens, and that's the goal of We the People. This online platform gives Americans a direct line to the White House on the issues and concerns that matter most to them.

You are now able to visit WhiteHouse.gov to seek action from the federal government on a range of issues. If a petition gathers enough signatures, the White House staff will review it, make sure it gets to Obama Administration policy experts, and issue an official response. President Obama will even answer a few himself.

While this is a big change for the White House's website, the idea is actually written into our founding documents. Throughout our history, Americans have used petitions to organize around issues they care about. We the People gives you a new way to join together with others to ask your government to address a problem, change a policy, or take action on a range of issues.

We the People will be launching very soon so start thinking about the issues that matter to you and the people you'll ask to join you.

Payday lenders charge 400% interest on short term loans in Illinois. This is legal. But should it be? We believe these rates are immoral and we’re working to change them through municipal ordinances that would cap interest rates at 36%.

As people of faith, Illinois People’s Action looks to scripture to provide a guideline with regard to lending:It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice” Psalm 112:5“Let the exacting of usury stop! Return to this very day … the interest on money, grain, wine and oil that you have been exacting from them.” Nehemiah 5:10-11Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed .” Jeremiah 22:3

Payday is robbing the poor among us. It is robbing our communities. In some cases, it is even robbing our churches. Families caught in payday loans often come to the church for help with food, clothing and utility bills. In essence, this means the church is subsidizing payday lender’s greed. The very families who get caught in the cycle of high interest payday loans, are usually the ones who can least

afford them. Most payday borrowers report that they were worse off as a result of their loan. We can change that. Working together to pass a municipal ordinance that caps interest rates at 36% will protect the most vulnerable members of our communities.

Throughout the state, IPA organized churches are meeting with mayors and city council members to talk about payday loans and to discuss introducing city ordinances that would cap interest rates at 36%. In general, the responses have been agreement that payday loans hurt families and are a blight in our communities.

Scripture calls on us to seek justice and correct oppression. Let us rise to this cause and live out our faith in the public arena. Let us say no to high interest rates that hurt the “least of these” among us.

I say to the Pastors, Ministers, church and community members who are not doing this: support the youth and elderly in your congregations and in the community by being visible in the community: teaching and helping each other and others, walking right, rather than just talking about what you are doing and/or will do while doing nothing to help in a positive way – for “Faith Without Action (positive and non-violent) Is Dead.”

Recipient of the 2012 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Outstanding Achievement Award.

Carlos Donaldson

“…To parents, guardians and family members: It is best to raise your children and teach them right, knowing they will do what is right, in God’s sight, in the end. Stop saying “I know my child did not or would not do that” because, if we are all truthful, there are things we did as children (and adults) that we know are wrong, thought we could and think we can get away with without our parents and others finding out about. So raise, respect and teach the young people to do what is right, praying they will be positive and productive people in adulthood.

Young people – I say to you – obey God; respect your parents, adult family members, elders, and leaders and authority figures who want what is best for you. Reach for the sky: getting an education is much better than getting a criminal record and going to jail and prison. You get an education and no one can take that away from you!
