INCIDENT COMMANDER FIREGROUND MAYDAY CHECKLIST Upon receipt of a mayday transmission on the fire ground, the Incident Commander should:
Acknowledge the Mayday
Control Radio communication by restricting the air to emergency traffic only.
Identify unit calling mayday and determine Problem— Location — Air — Needs
Advise mayday FF of GRAB LIVES: Gauge (check air gauge) Radio (radio for assistance) Activate (activate pass alarm) Breathing (conserve air ) Low (stay low) Illuminate (shine flashlight) Volume (make loud noises) Exit (find an exit) Shield Airway (protect airway)
Advise all companies on the fire ground of the mayday and the last known location Utilize the “inside/out” approach to locate unit calling mayday. Deploy the RIC or Standby team.
Backfill RIC or standby if launched. Advise dispatch of Mayday transmission:
Provide company name and/or name of missing or injured individual. Dispatch will proceed with their “mayday” procedures.
Request additional resources and additional alarms Request additional ALS resources as needed Request additional radio frequencies Continue fire ground activities to protect companies involved in RIC activities
Assign a “Rescue Group and Rescue Group Supervisor”. Manage rescue Communicate with RIC and mayday FF
Re Evaluate the IAP After rescue confirmed - Terminate the mayday and conduct “Roll Call” . Return incident communications to normal operations
Building Abandonment Checklist
1. Announce “Emergency Traffic - All units at X –Command Abandon the structure Immediately” Repeat two times.
2. Driver/Operators will initiate the air horn/abandonment alert.
3. IC will contact the Communications Center on the assigned tactical channel, advising, “Emergency Traffic”.
4. State that the structure, portion of the structure, or area must be abandoned, and request the Abandonment Tone be transmitted over the air.
