2007 NATIONAL MOO DO
FESTIVAL A HUGE SUCCESS
Students, parents, competitors and officials agree that the new Moo Do Festival format was very well received and well attended. Over 500 members participated in free seminars on Thursday Aug 23, then SAC, TAC, Hu Kyun In seminars on Friday Aug 24 and then in Hyung and Free Sparring Competition on Saturday, August 25th, 2007. In his opening remarks found in the 29th National Festival and Championships program, Kwan Jang Nim wrote,
“2007 marks the first year we are embracing the Moo Do Festival format at the U.S. Federation's Nationals. Evolving the U.S. Federation Nationals into a Festival format has been thoroughly considered and explored and has been initiated to better meet the needs of our art and to help ensure its future. The Moo Do Festival format will provide much larger opportunities for members to experience:
Philosophy in Action Celebration by recognizing Moo Do Values Moo Do education Strengthening Human Relations in old and new ways
This year's Moo Do Festival is a new experience for all of us and I expect this year will be recorded as a very special page in our Moo Do Kwan's long and distinguished history”
In closing remarks during festivities honoring the Kwan Jang Nim and celebrating his 60th Birthday, he declared, “You made history by being here this weekend”.

A Word From
The Kwan Jang Nim The Five Moo Do Values
in Action by H.C. Hwang, Kwan Jang Nim
Introduction
The five Moo Do values, History, Tradition, Philosophy, Discipline/Respect, and Techniques, are the backbone of our proud Moo Do identity. They coexist and furthermore, each element serves to strengthen the meanings of the other four. I would like to discuss how the Five Moo Do Values are applied to our daily training for strengthening us, not only as Moo Do practitioners, but also as individuals who provide positive influence on our society.
I hope this will help the Moo Duk Kwan practitioners to live with the Five Moo Do Values as basic action elements of their behavior rather than just concepts to speak about it.
Philosophy (Chul Hak)
"The most general beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group…" (ibid). Philosophy is guiding our intent (Shim Gong) toward the good. The 8 Key concepts, the 10 articles of faith on mental training, and many areas that we are studying from the teachings of the Moo Duk Kwan are excellent tools to strengthen Philosophy. In training, your first Shi Sun is an action of intent. Your intent will be much clearer when you are strengthened by the Philosophy. You will experience a good class for both your mind and body with clearer intent.
Peter greeted his instructor when he arrived at the Do Jang and when he left the Do Jang. His behavior is then
extended to his life beyond the Do Jang. It becomes a good foundation for him to build the Human Relations with his behavior. Peter’s intent was strengthened by the Jhoon Bee philosophy "start good, finish good." Philosophy strengthens Discipline and Respect. The intent is guiding our action. Our action will be meaningful when it is initiated by the good intent. These are some of the visible behavioral measurements of Philosophy in Action:
The person whose philosophy is demonstrated by their actions rather than talk.
The person who is providing views based on the
principle.
The person who makes a decision based on the principle.
Do I have philosophy in my behavior?
Editor's note: Kwan Jang Nim H.C. Hwang addressed History in the 2007 Winter issue and Tradition in the 2007 Summer/Fall issue of The Connection. He will address other Moo Do Values in future issues. http://soobahkdo.editme.com/MooDoValues

A Message From The Board of Directors http://soobahkdo.editme.com/FedOfficialsBoardDirectors
Dear Members, Families and Friends, I hope you and your family are happy and well. I would like to thank all the people who contributed to the great success our organization experienced at the National Moo Do Festival and
Championships in San Diego, California last month. As a result of diligent advance planning by the Technical Advisory Committee supported by the coordination efforts of Sa Boms Alex Baran and Debbie Lindemann plus a tremendous amount of work by many dedicated members of Region 9 and others, (Page 11) all attendees of the 1st National Moo Do Festival were able to enjoy a very rewarding experience. As the Chairman of the Board of Directors it is a privilege and an honor to be a part of the process that supports such meaningful events for Federation members. The Board of Director’s annual meeting at the 2007 Moo Do Festival was very productive. The 3-Step communication process for supporting our activities is on track and we have already approved our budget for 2008. http://soobahkdo.editme.com/3StepCommunicationPolicy
In addition, we agreed on a process to identify and recognize the members of our organization who continue to encourage the increased visibility of Soo Bahk Do. http://soobahkdo.editme.com/MemberRecognitionIndex
The Kwan Jang Nim spoke to the Board of Directors during their annual face-to-face meeting. His message was clear regarding the importance of supporting the National President’s Vision Tour Committee and its mission. He encouraged us to do all that we could as a Board to financially support and guide the day-to-day efforts of this committee. http://soobahkdo.editme.com/NationalVisionTourCommitteeMemberIndex
As a member of the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, you are represented by an elected member of the Board of Directors. You also have volunteer regional and local Vision Tour Committee Chairpersons you can cooperate with and I encourage you to be aware of who you've elected and who your other representatives are and to contact them frequently. http://soobahkdo.editme.com/FedOfficials
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank all the members for their continued support and diligent efforts towards the longevity of our art. Respectfully,
Robert Diehl, Chairman, Board of Directors

The 2007 Moo Do Festival by Phillip Bartolacci, Sa Bom Nim, Chairman, Technical Advisory Committee
Every once in a while an event takes place that changes the perception of what could be. That was the case at this special Moo Do Festival and National Championships held August 23-25 in San Diego, CA. It was a moving weekend for me, personally, and a leap forward for our Art.
Beginning with the Technical Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday morning, and following with the annual physical meeting of the Board of Directors, the event started out with our Leadership representatives in full support of this dynamic and innovative National festival. Kwan Jang Nim hosted a Leadership Dinner that evening, and thanked everyone for their support of not only this new Festival environment, but of the Moo Duk Kwan in general. Friday morning found the main hall filled with excited students and instructors alike. Each Region had Gup, Dan and Ko Dan Ja members participating in the various class offerings from all streams of Moo Do Leadership: The Senior Advisory Committee, the Technical Advisory Committee, the Hu Kyun In, Regional Examiners and National PVTC all had members leading a plethora of classes, lectures and seminars. In all, there were over 50 offerings spaced out over an 8-hour period. As a special event, Kwan Jang Nim taught Hwa Sun Hyung to all Yuk Dan members and above that evening in a spirited and focused session, giving us a reminder that we are always students. Interspersed throughout the day were demonstrations by Regional Ko Dan Ja for Kwan Jang Nim to review and determine who would be selected to share the stage with Kwan Jang Nim in the Saturday evening demonstrations. Ultimately, four Regions (4, 5, 6 and 8) were selected to join the Technical Advisory Committee in presenting for Kwan Jang Nim. All of us then lined up around the main floor to share in the most special of events, watching our Kwan Jang Nim
demonstrate Hwa Sun Hyung as performed by our Founder 25 years ago. It was a fitting testament to the enduring nature of our Art, our organization and our Founder’s vision. We were also visited by Hassane Boussalaa, Sa Bom, along with two others from Belgium, Bruno Schoonejans, Sa Bom and E Dan Sandrine Coppin. And, from Down Under, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Adamson (both Kyo Sa members) and their son were in attendance, representing Kriton Glenn, Sa Bom, Chair of the Australian Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation. What was gained from this experience was that the membership feels strongly that in addition to competition, the educational opportunities to expand the knowledge, application and creativity of our Five Moo
Do Values is powerful. With the wide range of training opportunities and access to our most Senior members all in one day, the Festival environment was successful. Many comments indicated that if we had two days of Festival clinics and educational opportunities that would be OK. Of course, the TAC’s job, as always, is to make next year’s event even better. To that end, we began with the TAC meeting Thursday AM, and we finished with a TAC meeting Sunday AM in order to review / debrief from the event. This is good choon be
philosophy in action. When you review the list of activities at this event, it is easy to see all five of the Moo Do Values in action: History was made by the event, and evidenced by the SAC, Hu Kyun In, etc. Traditions were kept relative to our innovative offerings and expressing our Moo Do heritage through our behaviors and actions all weekend long. Philosophy was alive through the belief that all of us are Jeh Ja (students) of the Moo Duk Kwan and that
our quest for a better understanding of the Moo Duk Kwan is unending. Discipline/Respect was all around us; in the clinics, the demonstrations and of course the competition. It is the Discipline/Respect duality that provides us with inner and outer strength. Finally, Technique was measured, compared and evaluated through the competition and evidence of the maturity of our Art and Organization from a Technical perspective abounded through the weekend. So, save the date (Aug 14-22) and join us in San Diego for the 2008
Festival and it will be even better than this year. We’re not sure how we’ll do it, but it is already done, Sir!

2007 National Festival Huge Success,
2008 August 14-22 San Diego, Ca http://soobahkdo.editme.com/NationalFestival2008
All Gup and Dan ranks and all ages participated in the 2007 National Festival with 290 participants from Region 9 and 9 to 62 members participating from other regions. All registered National Festival attendees received participation credit http://soobahkdo.editme.com/MemberParticipationCertificates
on their permanent member record. http://soobahkdo.editme.com/PermanentMemberRecord
Here’s what some of the 2007 attendees had to say:
"It was the best yet. The schedule with all the competitions on
Saturday made for a more interesting tournament." Debra Tessier, NJ
"I am a mother of two students who will be coming to their
first Nationals. We are all very excited to be part of such an
amazing event and can not wait until Aug. Our children ask
every day if it is time. My question to you is about the
Banquet. Our young children will be attending the Children’s
Celebration. However, will they be allowed to see the Kwan
Jang Nim's demonstration with us when he presents the public
performance of the Hwa Sun? This event is one of the many
reasons that our family is flying to the Nationals. We want our
children to understand the "True" beauty of their art and why
it is so very amazing!"
Hallae Aarhus, FL
"I thought the National Festival was a huge success. I'd like to
see the seminars continue next year. I do agree with everyone
that the banquet was superb. Kwan Jang Nim's demonstration
was priceless. And to share his birthday celebration was an
occasion I will never forget!"
Denise Mullin, NJ
"What a weekend of outstanding clinics, superb
demonstrations, and a smoothly run day of demonstrations by
all ranks. Friday's sessions brought 2 feelings. Our Seniors
gave so much in trying to share in multiple sessions and yet
one had to choose something and miss something else that you
really wanted to absorb. A great challenge to have.
The demonstrations on Saturday night were something to not
be missed. What can you say to even attempt to describe the
Kwan Jang Nim's gift of Hwa Sun? It brought goose bumps
and tears. Master Dolby's song was right on the money and
should be recorded for all to enjoy.
A great weekend for all who made it."
Greg Bryan, AZ
"I thought the National Festival was superb. So many great
seminars, it made it impossible to choose which ones to
attend. Saturday night left me speechless, with all the great
demos. I would love to be able to purchase the DVD of all the
performances of the evening. The Harold Payne songs were
great. If the CD of the song to Kwan Jang Nim becomes
available please let us know how to purchase a copy. To all
those that missed this years National Festival all I can say is
start making your plans for 2008. I believe this is definitely the
right direction for the Federation."
James Willers, TX
"I feel that the weekend was a huge success."
John Maihos, MA
“Save the dates, August 14 - 22, 2008!
The National Moo Do Festival was an amazing experience,
and though I don't know who they are individually, I'd like to
thank the Ko Dan Ja Candidates in 1996 for developing the
idea. Though I'd already attended National Championships
before this one, I left with a different feeling this year. It's a
feeling of a much greater connection to our Moo Do Values,
especially thanks to the seminars provided by our leadership. I
reconnected with individuals I hadn't seen since the 60th
Anniversary in Korea, as well as the original Guardians of the
Art weekend. I made new connections, and even helped Gup
members to enjoy and value their experience through either
officiating a ring, or picking up the spirits of students who
didn't place in competition. The latter, I think, made me feel
the best about the experience. Thank you, Kwan Jang Nim, the
SAC, TAC, HKI, BOD, the HQ staff, Coordinators, Officials,
Volunteers, Attendees (and their families!) for helping to make
this such an amazing weekend for my brother, Richard, and I.
Sorry if I missed anyone in my thanks! We can't wait to do it
again next year.”
Marc Enriquez -Miami, FL
“To all involved with the National Moo Do Festival:
Just a quick but heartfelt thank you for the fine event held. As
previously stated, the clinics were outstanding, and difficult to
choose between. The ones I attended were very enjoyable and
definitely gave me a better understanding of our Art. It was
also very rewarding to make new and renew old friendships.
I believe this format for a Moo Do Celebration/Festival is a
very good one for all our members. Everyone who attended
had an opportunity to participate somewhere, either clinic
and/or competition, and I truly feel that this cannot help but
strengthen all members of the MOO DUK KWAN.”
Bill Hockman, OK

“I hope this comment finds all of you and your families in the
best of health and spirits.
This truly was an amazing event. Friday, the day of the clinics,
was nearly overwhelming. There was so much history and
moo do presented that it not only anchored, but energized all
who attended. The clinics that I was fortunate to attend were
amazing. I only wish we had more time to absorb not only the
clinics we could attend but the others as well. What's great is
that it was very difficult deciding which clinics to take, as they
were all awesome.
The competition was also great. Seeing the Moo Do
philosophy in action is always good. It's always nice to see
that after an intense match, the sparring partners are
welcoming to each other and often chat after the competition
is over. Lifelong friendships sometimes begin in the ring in
Soo Bahk Do. If you view other tournaments, whether in
person or on television, this is usually not the case. The banquet was
great. Great food
and great
company. The
demos were a real
treat, and seeing
Hwang, Kwan
Jang Nim
demonstrate Hwa
Sun is something
that I'll never
forget.
A special thank
you for all of you
that put this
together and help make this a yearly "once in a lifetime"
event. This is a great format, a true celebration and not just a
tournament. Also, thank you to all the Ko Dan Ja who were
present as well as those that instructed in the clinics. Because
of you, we all walked away as better martial artists.
In Moo Duk Kwan,”
Dwayne Townsend, OK
“What a grand event! I was overwhelmed by the number of
clinics, enjoying the ones I could attend and being envious of
those that attended the ones I missed. Wonderful touch
bringing in the historical and philosophical clinics; so very
important. Learning from so many different instructors was
priceless. You really cannot put a price tag on the
experience.”
Larry Jordan, OK
“What a great event. I am looking forward to next year!!
Curt McCauley, WA
“Every year the Nationals get better, this one was no
exception. Having seminars before the competition was
excellent. My son Jonathan, (7-years old),could not stop
talking about the seminars I signed him up for. At first he was
not interested and had to be dragged into it. After the first
session he was charged and could not wait for the next and
was already asking about next years seminars. I liked the
format and wish that we could have two days of seminars, not
just one. In January I went to the Moment with the masters
and plan to go next year. I think more members would attend
if they where combined with the Nationals. Congratulations to
all who worked on this years nationals, AWSOME!”
Erik Orella, NJ
“WHAT A FANTASTIC, PHENOMENAL, EXTRAORDINARY,
OUTSTANDING, RARE, SENSATIONAL, AND UNIQUE
WEEK-END!!!! I'm just thrilled I was there! Thank you,
everyone who was involved in making Nationals such a great
experience.”
Robyn Willers, TX
“I will never forget this incredible event. I agree whole
heartedly with all of the previous comments. I didn’t start
going to National Events until I was an Ee Dan. I had lots of
legitimate excuses. I have now been to two Moment with the
Masters sessions,
the Korean 60th
Anniversary
Celebration and
this, my first
Nationals. I can not
turn back time. I can
only encourage all
members of the Moo
Duk Kwan, no
matter the rank, or
age or financial
condition, don’t wait
like I did until
"everything lines
up"; just go. You
will never regret going. I only regret not going as a white belt.
There really was something for everyone. Kahm Sa Ham Nee
Dah to all of the volunteers and senior members for their work
and contribution to an amazing experience.”

National President's Vision Tour
Committee http://soobahkdo.editme.com/NationalVisionTourCommittee
The President’s Vision Objective is “To strengthen our foundation through increased membership quantity and quality.” Quantity and quality; these are the keys to our success. Without these two things working in harmony there will be no foundation or future for the Moo Duk Kwan.
During my term as Chairman of the NPVT I have spoken with many members, each of which have strong opinions one way or another on what can and should be done in support of the President’s Vision Objectives. Even with their differing opinions they all share the same passion for the Moo Duk Kwan and a strong belief in what it stands for and what it can do for not only themselves, but for society as a whole. Quantity or quality, which is more important? Without new members there is nobody to keep the art alive. Without quality, what is the point of having members? No matter where our focus and direction lies, we must never lose our Moo Do identity. If we do, then it is all for nothing. During the National Moo Duk Kwan Festival I took the opportunity to speak with many in attendance and two members in particular took the time to share their views and passion for the Moo Duk Kwan and its future. Their comments really stuck with me because their words reflected very well what many others also said about the need for our art to seek a balance between quantity and quality. After hearing both speak and thinking about their thoughts and ideas I saw the connection and yet division that each one had taken. In the end each member was approaching the President’s Vision Objections from their perspective and in what they believe to be best. Neither perspective could be considered “wrong” in fact they both represented opposite sides of the coin, both being needed to complete the other. As studio owners, we are in effect managers and owners of a business. To be effective in that role we must be just as educated on how to run a business as we should be at teaching Soo Bahk Do. If we don’t understand the concepts of running a business, advertising and growth how can we expect to keep our studios open and
thriving. Rene Rothstein Kyo Sa Nim, from Region 4, who is in the midst of opening up her Do Jang believes in this concept so much that she has spent much of her time educating herself on how to successfully run her Do Jang with the goal and expectation of seeing her studio do just that. She had taken the time to invest in herself and the future of her studio, in essence the Moo Duk Kwan, to be sure she knows what is needed to successfully run a business. If she has the skills to run a successful studio/business then quantity will surely be obtained and future members are ensured an education in the Moo Duk Kwan. If her “business” fails, her doors will close and there will be no place to provide instruction for those members. With no members there is no Moo Duk Kwan. Just as our Moo Duk Kwan training is never ending, we should also take the same attitude towards our business training and invest in ourselves and the future of both our studios and the Moo Duk Kwan. More thriving studios mean greater visibility and thus more members. If all our efforts are put in the business training and development of our studio, what happens to our Moo Do identity? Having a strong thriving studio keeps our doors open, but what does it do for the current
membership and state of our art? What about quality? Drawing members in to the studio is only part of our goal and objective. Once in the Do Jang we need to be sure that they are being taught, nurtured and cultivated as practitioners of the Moo Duk Kwan rather than members who can just kick punch and block. When speaking with Teri Coffee Sa Bom Nim, she told me of the
PVT activities at Jang’s Karate Academy. The activities she told about were not focused on the recruitment of new members for the studio, rather they were focused heavily on the cultivation of spirit and character for existing members of the Do Jang. Does nurturing our current members contribute to a strong foundation for the Moo Duk Kwan and as a result an increase in the visibility of our art through their actions in public as a reflection of the Moo Duk Kwan? Of course. Once in the Do Jang ensuring the quality of our art and training helps to retain as well as strengthen the membership. No matter how large or small your do jang may be, our Moo Do identity must be maintained and cultivated. If all our efforts are spent internally what happens when, for one reason or another, those members can no longer train? Who will be there to replace them and continue the legacy? Will we be left with a strong core group of practitioners, a private club, with no future?

Kwan Jang Nim initiated his Vision Tour in 2003 by stating, “Our art’s foundation and life blood is new
beginners, Gup members, Dan members, Ko Dan Ja
members and their families. All are art of our
FOUNDATION. Current members can move toward the
goal of STRENGTHENING OUR FOUNDATION
through their active participation. Individual
participation is the Key Energy necessary to strengthen
our foundation.” http://soobahkdo.editme.com/VisionInAction What actions can each of us take individually to create new visibility for our art? For without new visibility, business knowledge and the motivation to grow and improve our studios how will we keep our doors open and who will we teach? Without quality, or a strong connection to our Moo Do identity, what will we have to offer all those we are seeking to attract? In the end, both initiatives must work in harmony for our art to thrive and be preserved for the next thousand years and more. http://soobahkdo.editme.com/NPVTAwards

Jang’s Karate Center, President’s Vision
Tour, Quality- our Moo Do Identity by Teri Coffee, Sa Bom Nim
The Kwan Jang Nim’s Vision Tour message guides our Do Jang to follow the Moo Do values in our training and express those standards in our community as representatives of the Art. In doing this we believe we are cultivating our better selves and contribute to the Art, our Do Jang, our Sa Bom Nim, the Federation, and the Kwan Jang Nim. We assert that the maturation of our members and studio through learning and following the principles of the Moo Do spirit is an important initial step in the growth of the Moo Duk Kwan.
The visibility of our studio’s physical, mental and spiritual training to the community is the most viable vehicle for engaging new members and creating opportunity for
training. Our approach is to publicly celebrate the spirit of Moo Duk Kwan and allow people who are attracted to the discipline and tradition we portray in our healthy and supportive environment both physically and spiritually, to step forward and join us, rather than aggressively pursue them by other means.
Moo Duk Kwan principles places the emphases of training as a long-term practice of maturing attitude and character as part of promotion. If we focus on the more visible elements of promoting students, the fundamentals of the art may be lost, leaving the physical technique without a philosophical foundation.
Jang, Sa Bom Nim identifies three stages of this journey as Client, Student, and Moo Do Jeh Ja. The client is the goal-oriented person looking for the promotion or symbols of external recognition. The Student looks for
the education value of the training. S/he is interested in the accumulation of theory, skills, and facts. The Moo Do Jeh Ja seeks to integrate the training in such a way that there is no distinction between him/her and the Art itself.
We believe the cultivation of Moo Do philosophy, Kwan Jang Nim’s references in the five Moo Do Values, is an inside-out process. At the core is Kwan Jang Nim, the source of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. The next rings out are the Sa Boms and then the Federation members. While each ring and even within each ring there may be a variance of Moo Do maturation, it is the intent of Oneness with the Kwan Jang Nim that is the goal of the President’s Vision.
For many practitioners their training is as private as their political or religious affiliation. Anyone who has made their training public realizes that the casual curiosity of others quickly moves to their interest in ranks of black belt, how much injury you can inflict, and how afraid they should be of you. For some Moo Do Jeh Ja this may be an uncomfortable situation for discussing our art. While initiating a conversation about your training may fit some circumstances the most influential mode of visibility of the Art is through the demonstration of Moo Do philosophy in action.
Jang Karate Center Criteria for Projects: A project needs to stay within our human resource and skill set. Students and benefactors of the project should easily
recognize mutual benefit. It should be reasonable that a studio would take on such a project. The project cannot incur a financial burden or expectation of the studio or students.
Jang Karate Center Targeted Outcomes: The students, the studio, and the Moo Duk Kwan must benefit from recognition of putting Moo Do philosophy in action. Each
project should build capacity and resources, i.e. leadership, organizational skills, human relationships, and maturation of Moo Do spirit.
Jang Karate Center Commitment: Projects should be large enough in duration and/or scope to impact the community or targeted group’s awareness of our efforts.
Jang Karate Center Expected Outcomes: There needs to be a method for people who are interested in what we are doing to get more information about Soo Bahk Do and our studio.
Jang Karate Center Long Range Planning: The long-range goal of our PVT projects is to create a position in the community so that the community recognizes us specifically and accurately.

Region 4 Leadership Weekend
Region 4 Leadership Weekend by Ben LaMasters, Jo Kyo and Michael Fritts, Kyo Sa
For decades our organization has excelled at creating leaders and instructors who do great things for the Moo Duk Kwan and its members. These leaders are spread throughout the world and, for the most part, one would have to visit a leader in order to benefit from his or her instruction. Occasional clinics at Dan tests and tournaments allow students and instructors to reap the benefits of training under different leaders, but such sessions often only last one or two hours. The idea of a regional leadership training session is where all instructors and potential instructors are invited together to train and benefit from their shared knowledge and experience. Six years ago, this concept was put into action in Region 4. Since that time there has been an annual leadership weekend retreat. This is where an increasing number of members have gone to train and gain new insight to teaching techniques and strategies. The idea has worked so well that other regions will soon be hosting their own similar events, an idea made easier by a recent region 4 leadership weekend project. There is now a template in place for anyone who wishes to organize a leadership weekend in their own area. The event is open to all instructors and students interested in becoming instructors. They meet at a central location and spend the next few days training, working and living together, cut off (to a certain extent) from the outside world. Region 4 uses a facility that is primarily a summer camp, so everything from bunks to a mess hall to both indoor and outdoor training areas are easily at hand. The program includes indoor and outdoor Soo Bahk Do training, and lectures on important topics ranging from growing a studio to sexual harassment issues, to basic human psychology. A number of different instructors teach the different clinics, in Region 4’s case ranging from TAC chairman Bartolacci Sa Bom Nim to three Kyo Sa candidates who
taught a one-hour class together as part of their test for instructor certification. Also attending were Region 4’s Regional Examiners: Lisa Donnelly, SBN and John Maltby, SBN. One of the greatest aspects of this event, is that the vast majority of Region 4’s leadership, as well as some special guests from other regions, attended. Since the theme was leadership and instruction, there were plenty of opportunities for everyone from Yuk Dan instructors to Sa Gup students to learn and train together. Also, teaching opportunities were given to all. Even the most junior members were given a chance to feel what it is like to be an instructor. It really is a powerful sight to see such a wide range of practitioners train together with a common goal. In addition to the seminars and training opportunities, attendees were assigned projects in the same style of a Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa. They were split into groups and
asked to come up with everything from ideas on assisting new studio owners to a leadership weekend template for other regions to follow. These groups spent their “relaxation” time and some of their meal time
brainstorming, creating, and finalizing these projects. At the
end of the weekend, the groups presented their hard work, giving everyone an opportunity to learn from their brainstorming sessions. The Region 4 leadership weekend, in its 6th year, was a great success. Friendships were made and strengthened, new ideas on instruction were introduced, and everyone came away feeling great about what they learned, and eager to put their new knowledge into action the next time they taught. This event would be a great addition to any region’s plans, and all of us in Region 4 hope that instructors across the country are able to attend their own leadership weekend in the future. If that is not feasible, you are all welcome to attend the next Region 4 leadership weekend, as this annual tradition will successfully endure for years to come.
