Come this January, GoPacks will become a United Way Partner Agency! The United Way
Alliance of the Mid Ohio Valley has awarded GoPacks a $10,000 grant for 2019.
In addition to this generous grant, all 2019 Partner agencies are receiving $1,000 worth
of Marietta College’s Nonprofit LEAD services courtesy of Sisters Health Foundation!
Talk about Icing on the cake!

United We Stand
American Red Cross Adult & Child CPRWe are very grateful to Marla Hoerst, certified
American Red Cross Trainer, for bringing CPR
training to GoPacks’ offering of workshops and
classes last year. What an important skill to
have! Classes were offered at all four Marietta
City Elementary Schools on adult and child CPR,
with the option of filing for official certification.
We are currently working on scheduling more of
these opportunities for this school year.
Since March 2015, GoPacks has been working with families in Marietta City
Elementary Schools to fight food insecurity. Over the past years we have gotten to
know many wonderful students and families. So it is only natural for our next
expansion step to be to the middle school, where we can continue the fight together.
During the spring semester of 2018, a First Year Seminar (Class FYS199) at Marietta
College officially began the Marietta Middle School Expansion Project by researching the
best way for GoPacks to operate in a middle school setting. Led by Nicole Livengood and
Heather Miller, the class of six students studied school food distribution programs around
the country. They interviewed local individuals, identified challenges in distribution and
additional needs of middle school students. At the end of the semester, the class
presented their recommendation of an execution model to the GoPacks Board. It is this in-
school store model that GoPacks is now pursuing for Marietta Middle School.
GoPacks Expanding to Marietta Middle School
Laying the Ground Work
The in-school store will also further GoPacks’ desire to offer fresh produce when
possible, while at the same time, building students’ knowledge. An indoor
gardening feature is being developed that will allow students to learn about, and
actively tend an indoor garden throughout the school year. The Marietta Middle
School expansion will also include all of the various resource network opportunities
that are offered to families at the elementary schools.
The concept is an in-school store/pantry that is open to all students at Marietta
Middle School. Located on the first floor of Marietta Middle School, this store will
use a cashless software system that will allow parents and GoPacks to purchase
various food bundles via the internet. This set up will meet the needs of students
looking for a healthy snack before extracurricular activities begin, after school, and
those needing to take home some food for the weekend.
Although no official launch date is set yet for the opening of the Middle School Store,
GoPacks is dedicated to starting the program this school year. We are currently
waiting on decisions for potential start-up funding due to many grants operating on a
calendar year. However, while we wait to hear about funding, we continue to work
on acquiring the necessary equipment and inventory and remaining details.
We will be assembling volunteer teams to work the store on a weekly basis and
gardeners to assist with both instruction and maintenance of the indoor garden. If
the Middle School Expansion project interests you, we would love to get you involved
now! Contact Heather Warner at 740.628.5533 or
[email protected] and get in on the ground floor of this great
opportunity within our community.

Up until April 2018, GoPacks had only conducted small fundraisers such as book sales, card sales and food/supply drives. All that changed on April 27, 2018 when we hosted our
first Top Chef Challenge. The event consisted of an evening of fine dining and entertainment. Three local chefs, Dave Rudie, Tom Hickey, and Tyson Whistler, gathered
at the Shrine Club in Marietta to see who could create the best entree using items typically found in GoPacks weekend bags! The evening also included culinary themed silent and live auctions. The evening ended on a high note for Chef Tom Hickey as he was declared
GoPacks’ Top Chef of the year and for GoPacks as we raised $6,000 for the program!
We hope you will be able to join us for our next GoPacks Top Chef Challenge, coming in the spring of 2019!
For the second spring in a row, OSU Extension Agent Marcus McCartney and Master Gardener Cindy Brown, traveled to Marieta City Elementary Schools to show
GoPacks students and families the tricks to successful container gardening. Appropriate containers, fertilizer,
water and sun needs were all discussed and then things got messy! All attending families planted their own container gardens. Tomatoes, peppers, spinach, and green beans created a nice assortment of fresh produce to be had over the summer. We’re happy to
report that for the second year, we have received reports of families still harvesting vegetables when
school started at the end of August!
How Fresh Can We Get?
Marietta College Group Hosts Homework Help WorkshopIn November, 2017, a group of students from Marietta College hosted a workshop
for GoPacks’ families, aimed at helping parents and their students tackle homework issues and study habits. The workshop was organized by three MC students and featured Amanda Heney-Cech, Academic Resource Center Director at Marietta
College. Various strategies on how to prepare for tests, encourage studying and ways to help with homework were discussed. Delivered with snacks and child
supervision for little ones, the class was a happy success.
