In September 2011, our United Way board of directors adopted a strategic direction with three impact areas:

Between September 2011 and May 2012, 49 United Way board and community members met three dozen times to research community needs, evaluate local data, understand where services were lacking, and determine how we could best invest donors’ gifts.

During this months-long investigation, our United Way adopted priorities in the School Readiness, Self-Sufficiency, and Community Health Impact Areas. Priorities were selected in areas where our United Way could have critical, lasting, and more significant impact. Our priorities guide both our grants to community agencies and our own direct services, and will:

A great deal of thanks goes to our board, and to the community members and agency experts who worked diligently with us to determine these priorities, and to our donors who graciously support our work.

Increase home visiting services for young children to ensure school readiness

Improve the quality of early child care

Address barriers to employment

Support job training

Increase financial education and literacy

Improve prenatal care and the health of babies

Promote physical activity, improve nutrition and obesity prevention

Increase access to preventative and basic health care

Our United Way has been serving the needs of our local residents for 69 years and we have always sought to support our community in the best, most efficient way we know how. We believe that because of our enduring strength and stability and the breadth of the needs we evaluate and address, the United Way is uniquely positioned to play a leadership role in our community.

By focusing our resources on specific, targeted issues, we can have the greatest return on investment for our donors who share our concerns, and the greatest impact in changing lives.

Our United Way seeks innovative approaches to address critical issues and will bring funding, advocacy and volunteerism to create better outcomes.

By partnering and encouraging collaboration, our new approach will enable us to address significant challenges and create lasting, life-changing differences for our citizens.

We are energized by this new direction. It is our hope that you will join us with your financial support and volunteer efforts.
