Different People. United Mission.

Page 3: United Way of Central Minnesota Annual Report

CONTENTSAs I begin my 21st year in the United Way system, I find myself reflecting on the unique position that the United Way’s across the country hold within their respective communities United Way of Central Minnesota has a long standing reputation for its community work, its desire to improve community conditions, and its ability to bring people from across all areas of our community together for important

dialogues and collaborations In the past 18 months, UWCM has continued to move even further along that pathway of inclusiveness and strategic alignment of those donor dollars around community needs with the implementation of its new strategic plan Being able to witness the over 160 community volunteers come together to discuss best practices, best strategies, and areas of opportunities is exciting Focusing on community conditions and how we can collectively “move the needle” on these conditions will be the result of this very important work The dedication of these individuals and the continuing support of the many donors within our community is a daily reminder of the important role that our United Way plays within our community

As the new President and CEO for UWCM, I am extremely excited about the new opportunities and collective impact projects that can be developed as we continue to move forward The values of United Way are embodied in our LIVE UNITED campaign This is a call to action – an invitation for everyone to join us to move forward on these goals It will take everyone working together – giving, advocating and volunteering – to make progress on these goals across Central Minnesota Through the leadership of our truly engaged board, and a very talented staff and the numerous dedicated volunteers who truly “live united” in their work every day, I believe we can succeed

On behalf of the staff and volunteers who live this message every day, we thank you, the community, for your tremendous support

Give Advocate Volunteer Live United!

A LETTER FROM GEORGE WILKES It has been my distinct pleasure to serve on the United Way Board for the past seven years and as the Board chair for the past two years As our community continues to deal with the impact of dwindling government funding of critical services, the role of United Way in our community

becomes more significant than ever

If nothing else, the dramatic happenings of the past decade or so have taught all of us of the need for change And the past year was indeed a year of change at United Way We were incredibly fortunate to have Noreen Dunnells lead our organization for over a decade With Noreen now moving to Oregon to accept the United Way challenge on the West Coast, we find ourselves just as fortunate to have secured theservices of a seasoned United Way leader in Patrick

Powell to lead our organization in the years to come

During the past year we also spent a great deal of time studying our long term strategic direction, with a laser focus on ways to impact the root causes of issues impacting our community Our funding system organizational structure was adjusted to develop even more collaboration in a community that already is a shining star of collaboration

It has been humbling to see our community partners, community subject matter experts, and volunteers come together, more determined than ever to find new ways to create community-wide change We are so very fortunate to live in a community that just continues to give of its time, talent, and financial resources

On behalf of the United Way of Central Minnesota, thank you for your continued commitment and support

THE SHINDELE FAMILY STORY By TaLeiza Calloway

Members of the Shindele family lead busy lives Between work, school, military deployments and extra-curricular activities, their world is pretty packed

What has helped things run smoothly for this St Cloud family? KIDSTOP, a United Way partner program It allows both parents to work while providing a place of enjoyment for their children

When Angi Shindele’s husband Nate was deployed, she felt good knowing she had the needed help from her children’s school and KIDSTOP

“Being the only one here, it was very reassuring knowing my kids were in good hands,”Shindele said

For Tanner Shindele, attending KIDSTOP at Talahi Community School is fun because he gets to spend time with friends When the 9-year-old is not enjoying his peers, you can find him BMX bike riding

For his younger sister Lilly, 8, the program allows her to do one of her favorite things: arts and crafts

“It’s creative,” Lilly Shindele said of the various art projects students make “It’s fun ”

Their younger sister Elsa is in her first year of participation It is clear the 5-year-old likes the new people she is meeting as she laughed with a friend during a lunch break at the park

Three of the five Shindele children participate in the program year-round Angi Shindele likes what KIDSTOP offers not only her children but all students Noting how easy it is for children to grow bored, the variety children have is what stands out the most about the program

“They absolutely love it,” Angi Shindele said “We would not be able to function without it I don’t think ”

KIDSTOP is a United Way program partner.

GRANITE SOCIETYEvery year, the outpouring of compassion and generosity from thousands of people confirms a belief in United Way and the future of our community Some donors have gone a step further by arranging a planned gift to United Way

United Way of Central Minnesota friends who make a planned gift will be recognized as a member of the United Way Granite Society Just as granite has provided a solid foundation for Central Minnesota, Granite Society members will continue to provide a solid foundation for our community for generations to come

For more information on how making a planned gift could benefit you and the community, please call United Way of Central Minnesota’s Leadership and Planned Gifts department, 320-252-0227

“Having more stuff doesn’t make you happy ” This simple yet very logical explanation from Adam Whitten summarizes why he and his wife Chris LeDuc have included the United Way of Central Minnesota in their estate planning for the last twelve years “I really have everything I need Giving is one of the ways that makes me feel fulfilled If I can help others when I’m gone, I’m happy that I can help make the world a better place The value of giving is more important than having something that will sit in my garage ”

“We like the fact that United Way is a ‘one-stop shop’,” Chris added “The board is made up of volunteer community members who decide where funds will go based on the needs of the community The process is so ideal We can’t make large gifts at this time, but with planned giving, it makes absolute sense to have things lined up ahead of time We can make a difference and that feels really good ”

You have spent a lifetime giving, why not make it last forever.

LOYAL CONTRIBUTOR

For Bob and JoAnn Thueringer, the decision to contribute to the United Way of Central Minnesota has not only been an easy choice, but

also a dedicated one “For me, it goes back to 1967, when I was a sixteen-year-old high school student At the time, United Way was conducting its first campaign in St Cloud I was working at Coborn’s and Dan Coborn led an employee meeting, and introduced the United Way as a new way to give back to the community At that time the standard was giving one hour of pay per month Dan stressed that the success of the campaign was built on broad-based participation He left me with the impression that just because I was a sixteen-year-old high school student I wasn’t excused from my responsibility to give back to the community ” Bob has continued to be involved in United Way ever since, serving on United Way committees and as the board chair in 2003 He and JoAnn have also been actively involved in volunteering in their community for years

JoAnn has been a long time United Way contributor through her employment at CentraCare “CentraCare’s campaign is very organized There are many activities to keep employees involved It’s a fun way of raising money The employer leadership also does a good job of showing the benefits of making a difference in your community ”

When asked why they continue to contribute to United Way, Bob replied, “If you had to find a single best way to give back to the community, the United Way is it They have demonstrated a responsible way of handling the dollars collected and getting them back to people in need ” JoAnn agreed, adding “United Way reviews the agencies receiving funding to see how they’re fiscally managing those dollars given to them ”

Even in the current economic climate, Bob and JoAnn’s devotion to giving back to the community remains constant “What we’ve seen recently is that the need in the community is as great as it ever has been,” Bob remarked “We have an economy that’s stalled out People are having a harder time finding reasons to give…”

“…but there’s always someone who’s had it tougher than you,” JoAnn commented, completing the thought “If you don’t help out your community, it won’t be a community that people will want to come to and do business in ”

Bob and JoAnn Thueringer have been loyal supporters of the United Way of Central Minnesota for decades, and they don’t plan on ending their commitment any time soon “It’s a personal decision for everyone, but we’ll continue to give as long as we can,” Bob continued “It’s important that the basic principle of giving back to your community shouldn’t stop just because you’re retired It’s the right thing to do, even though it may not be the easiest thing to do ”

The United Way Loyal Contributor program is a special recognition society for individuals and couples who have been donating to United Way - in any community, at any amount - for 10 years or more

If you have been investing in United Way for 10 years or more, please remember to indicate that you are a Loyal Contributor on your pledge card this year We would love to recognize you for your generous support

Loyal Contributors are marked with a “♦” throughout this booklet.

SUCCESS BY 6 AND IMAGINATION LIBRARY CONTRIBUTIONS

SPONSORSHIPS AND IN-KIND

Success By 6 (SB6) is a collaboration to build community support for children during the formative years that influence their entire lives - from birth to age six By bringing all aspects of our community together, we can address the needs of young children and their families so that all children are prepared for success in school and in life

United Way's Success By 6 believes effective parenting can be learned and every child has potential A strong

community builds upon the assets, strengths and capabilities of children and their families But all of us need to take responsibility

Success By 6 would not be possible without grants, local corporations and individuals supporting the program year-round!

Imagination Library is a program of the United Way of Central Minnesota Success By 6 initiative and offered in partnership with the Dollywood Foundation Parents with children, from birth to their fifth birthday, who live in the UWCM service area, are eligible to sign up for Imagination Library Each month children enrolled in the program receive a free, age appropriate book in the mail The program is offered to families at no cost

Imagination Library is partially funded locally by individual donations from parents, community members, organizations and special grants Last year 11,633 children received books through the program A child can be sponsored for $30 per year
