As 2011 winds down, I want to take a moment to reflect on themany blessings that have been bestowed on St. Vincent’s

HealthCare Foundation. Thanks to generous gifts from our donors,employees, and physicians, the Foundation continues to help supportthe many good works of St. Vincent’s mission and ministry.

One of the many wonderful aspects of my job are the opportunities I have to hear patients’ stories aboutthe excellent, compassionate care they received during their stay at St. Vincent’s Medical Center,

St. Luke’s Hospital, or St. Catherine Labouré Manor. These stories both inspire me and fill me with pridebecause each day, I know I work among angels and among healthcare heroes whose caring spirits bring asmile to a patient’s face and hope to their hearts.

For the past seven years, St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation has honored three of these angels at theCarol Wilder Pitman Nursing Recognition Society Reception. These direct care nurses are recognized forexemplifying St. Vincent’s core values by providing compassionate, patient-centered nursing care whileleading by personal example and a positive spirit. St. Vincent’s De Paul Society held its first Coffee and Conversation on November 15 in the Gaston J. Acosta-Rua, M.D. Conference Room at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. This new event

is one of our many ways we thank our De Paul Society members for their annual support. Coffee and Conversation is held in a casual, open setting where guests have the opportunity

to listen to different speakers, learn about a variety of healthcare topics, ask questions, and enjoythe camaraderie of fellow De Paul Society members. This event will be offered several times ayear and the next one will be held in February 2012.

November’s Coffee and Conversation featured David McInnes, M.D., M.S.Ed., Director of St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Center and Program Director of St. Vincent’s Family MedicineResidency Program. Dr. McInnes spoke on the best way to communicate with doctors when youare the patient or caregiver. He shared insights on how to prepare for a meeting with a doctor—for instance, create a health journal that tracks you or your loved one’s medications and amounts. Dr. McInnes also discussed the importance of having a living will, as well as the need to designate a healthcare surrogate.
