It is finally boating season! I hope you have your boat in the water and have had a safety check from one of our Vessel Safety Examiners. Julie and I have our boat in the water and are enjoying the new experience of a center console. It is a fun boat and by the time you read this we should be at our dock in Battery Park in Sandusky! Our Admin Officer, Lt/C Jerry Nagy has some nice events planned for the summer and this fall. I hope you will at-tend every one of them and enjoy the benefits of member-ship in RRSPS. Please join us at the D7 Cruise to Middle Bass Island…see details in this issue. One of our benefits, and one for which most of us joined RRSPS, is the education we receive and share with every-one. I encourage you to further you boating and naviga-tional knowledge by enrolling in one of our upcoming courses. If you have an interest in a particular area, I am sure we can provide the class to make it happen. We are also looking for people to share their boating experience and knowledge. To be a USPS instructor it is important to take our Instructor Qualification class. We are planning to offer one, hopefully before September. Come on, share your enthusiasm for boating and USPS, become an in-structor! Please contact our Education Officer, Lt/C Jim Christman, for details and more information. We need everyone to become fully engaged and involved in Rocky River Sail and Power Squadron, not only to grow, but to continue our mission as a Social, Fraternal and Educational organization. I cannot emphasize enough how much your commitment means to our Squadron, please be a willing giver of your time and talent. Here’s to a wonderful, fun and safe summer boating sea-son! See you on the water! Cdr Jim Holcepl, N

Executive Department P/C Thomas S Glassell, AP [email protected]

With the exception of the vessel safety check crew this is a pretty quiet time of the year for committees falling under the Executive Department. Safety checks were conducted at E. 55th Street Marina on 30 May and 6 June and our thanks to all who participated. If you would like to join the team please don't hesitate to contact P/C Jim Mason, SN at 216-905-7234. You'll get a great red VSC polo shirt! Hopefully we'll soon be getting some consistent boating weather. When you're out on the water be sure to keep a watchful eye for any changes in navigational aids: land masses, harbor entrances, any deviation from charts or GPS courses which could affect a fellow boater getting from point A to point B. Report any findings to our Co-0p Charting Chair, P/C Sue Lowe,N at 2from16-226-0233. Sue will fill out a report and forward it through proper channels and our squadron will receive credit for every completed report. Our Marketing Chair, P/C Liz Glassell,AP, submitted advertising for our spring ABC Boating classes to the Plain Dealer and Sun newspapers. These ads are made possible through a grant from ODNR, Division of Water-craft. Too early to tell how successful they were. Liz and I look forward to seeing you at one of our Friday night dinners or at one or more of the summer cruises. For those of you who are old enough to remember going to the movies and enjoying the cartoons, there was one that always ended in "That's all folks." P/C Tom Glassell, AP

Thank you!! To all who signed the petition to develop a personalized USPS Ohio license plate...

IT’S HERE! The Ohio squadrons were successful in the final development of a auto license plate for purchase. The plate can be ordered at the BMV, and probably online as well for an additional $25.00. ohio.state.gov/license.

The proceeds of the license plate sales go directly to the Ohio squadrons for educational purposes. So at your next renewal, or purchase of a new vehicle, inquire about the NEW USPS License Plate!

Another way to promote and support your squadron.

REMINDER!!

The ‘John C Hauck, SN Memorial Fund’ accepts applications for assistance from members considering taking either Junior Navigation or Navigation advanced grade courses.. There are scholarship funds available for those who complete and pass the exam.

This is great opportunity to advance your boating skills and knowledge at a discount up to half off the course fee.

Contact Educational Officer Lt/C Jim Christman, N 440–537-4800 or Cdr Jim Holcepl, N 440-281-4999 for additional information on upcoming course offerings and to apply.

Welcome to summer. It sure took a long time to get here.

We have an ABC class on going with six students. Another class is starting on 23 June, 2015 at the Don Umerley Rec. Center in Rocky River at 6:30 PM.

If you know anybody interested please have them call me at 440-537-4800 or [email protected].

If any member is interested in any advanced classes please let me know. I will try to schedule as many as we can, but we need folks to attend. I could also use some help finding rooms to hold classes. We are on a limited budget so even free would be good. I want to thank Mike Zavasnik and Bob Brown for being the Instructors for the ABC classes.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

SAFETY FIRST As we prepare to set sail whether by sail or power, please note the following points from the Ohio Department of Natural Re-sources Division of Watercraft. (Taken in part from articles on ohio.gov site - see http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov- for full report)

Adhere to the recommendations, some laws, while you are en-joying your passion and favorite pastime so there are no casual-ties on the water!

WEATHER or NOT to boat: Heed the weather, heed the warnings:

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY: Sustained weather conditions, either present or forecast. 18 knot winds or hazardous wave con-ditions. GALE WARNING: Indicate winds raging 37-47 knots STORM WARNING: Indicate winds 48 knots and above SPECIAL MARINE WARNING: Issued whenever a severe local storm or strong wind of brief duration is imminent and is not covered by existing warnings or advisories. Keep your radio tuned to NOAA Weather Station or to Cost Guard and commercial stations that transmit marine weather information. Know weather advisories and what they mean. Frequency of severe storms and high winds happen quickly. Know how and have a plan of action should you be caught in such conditions while on the water. Know the larger picture when venturing out into the open water, it may save your life.

FILE A FLOAT PLAN: In wr iting, with a family member , friend or neighbor. Makes sense. You can find a blank form on the DNR site.

PRE-LAUNCH CHECKLIST-Including, but not limited to: Boat Registration; Safety Equipment; (Free Vessel Safety In-spections are available through RRSPS VS Check Team—call Cdr Jim Holcepl, N 440-281-4999 or [email protected]) Are all potential operators compliant with Ohi or state law where you boat; Check Flares & Fire Extinguishers; Check the First Aid Kit; Life jackets-make certain they are usable and readily available; Check Fittings; Check for Winter Damage, non-metallic hulls, hoses, loose or split; Check the fuel System, fittings and hoses; Check electronic gear-fresh batteries, Check for Anchor Lines for chafing-replace if warn; Check the boat trailer, if applicable, tires, frame, wheel bearings, lights, license tags.

Check the oil-Creamy brown or gray engine or drive oil has water in it and a mechanic should find the source of the leak before you start your engine; Examine Sailboat Rigging-look for signs of corrosion and wear, and for leaks where chain mountings come through the deck; Check charts and maps-Are your charts and waterway guides current? Channel markers and buoys change frequently so it is a good idea to update guides every few years. This is not a complete list of possibilities. Use the knowledge you gained in RRSPS courses and your experi-ence.

LIFE JACKETS-It floats, you DON’T. It’s the LAW! Don a life jacket on or near the water, when boating alone, rid-ing a PWC, waterskiing, being towed or similar activity, chil-dren less than age10 on any vessel less than 18 ft in length, es-pecially if a boater cannot swim or is a weak swimmer, in dan-gerously cold water, rough water/waves severe weather condi-tions, boating at night, emergency situations, swift and fast cur-rent situations. It is a good idea for children and pets to wear a life jacket any time they are near the water. When on a canoe or kayak. >>>>>>>>> .

>>>> Must have one jacket for each person on board, properly sized, not torn or broken buckles, has rips, unattached webbing, or missing straps, has rotting material or parts showing excessive wear. Check inflatable lanyard to see that it hangs freely from the inflatable life jacket and make sure all inflatables have a properly armed inflata-ble mechanism. There are 5 types of PFD’s plus inflatables… Choose a jacket that you will wear, meets the needs of the activity you will participate in, and will work for the environment to which they are exposed. Be safe out there!

Hello friends and neighbors. Summer is finally on the horizon, and for the few of us left with boats, it’s always both a fun experience and horrify-ing at times. Our CYC Power Fleet had their first outing of the year down to the new Inner Harbor Marina Saturday May 30th. All was going as planned until an ugly rain & wind storm happened right as we were eating a nice ca-tered dinner under an overhang behind the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The wind and rain got channeled through a narrow passage at 40-60 knts., and all hell broke out. Plates, food, and even a few chairs went airborne, and our dinner was awash. It looked like a food fight from the movie, Animal House. The rain and wind continued through the night, and no one could leave by boat the next day. The lake looked like the Perfect Storm, and the Rocky River was non-navigable due to the current and all the debris. Hopefully, the rest of the boating season will go a little smoother. Regarding our own cruising for RRS&PS, as we all know by now, our rendezvous to Huron Lagoons Marina had to be cancelled. We hope we can see as many of you with boats and those that will ferry over to Middle Bass for the D7 cruise Friday 7/31—8/2. Also, we are trying to gener-ate enough interest in our annual historical weekend at PIB 9/11—9/13 Our Friday Night dinners continue to be a big suc-cess. Almost 30 members and guests showed up at the Ironwood Café on May 22. It was either good food, good drinks, camaraderie, or the lure of great birthday cake in honor of the writers birthday that attracted the good turn-out. Our next Friday dinner will be 6/19 at the new Felix & Os-cars at 6:30, formerly Panini’s @ Clague & Detroit Rds. Hope to see as many or more there. Please send for head count purposes, your RSVP to Liz. Our Friday dinner for August is yet to be announced. As always, an e/m blast will keep all informed as to the Where & When. Our Annual Steak & Lobster event is scheduled for Satur-day 9/26 at CYC. Make sure you put that on your calen-dars. Chef Karl will be looking for able bodied helpers as in the past. Please volunteer. This is a big event, and there are a lot of things requiring our membership’s help to pull this off.

Lastly, as part of our civic responsibilities, P/D/C Liz Glassell AP and I had the annual honor of rep-resenting our squadron at the USS Cod on Memo-rial Day morning to pay our respects for those who have pasted in the last 12 months from all the boating organizations that are part of the Lake Erie region. Further, thanks to Mike, Roger, & Dorothy (Cleveland), Wayne Powers (Berea), Liz & Sue Lowe who helped me raise all the flags at CYC’s annual commissioning ceremony; and a few drinks afterwards. Smooth sailing. Lt/C Jerry Nagy AP

A welcoming sunrise, calm seas and restful sun-sets…...God bless all our friends and their families….

Sad news to report about James W. Tighe II, P. Jim left us on June 5 after a long, courageous 7 year battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS. Always there for everyone, with a smile and a joke, we have missed and will continue to miss his smiling face and true friendship. P/Lt/C Michael Westrick, AP. Mike passed away Apr il after battling several medical conditions. Mike was a huge part of RRSPS and our Education Department and was our Educational Officer since he joined 11 years ago after retir-ing from ODNR-Division of Watercraft. Mike was often a ‘one-man band’ doing all jobs connected with education until he had to step down last year do to health issues. Rocky River will miss Mike and his stories of boating and law enforcement on the water throughout Ohio, as well as his passion for politics and as a rabid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Rest in peace Mike. A memorial service was held in Mike’s home town of Defi-ance June 10, 2015. Visit: Online condolences www.diciccoandsonsfh.com or obits.cleveland.com/obituaries .
