334 FONTES ARTIS MUSICAE 40/4

The Conference was an excellent forum

for meeting with colleagues and exchanging news and views in an informal manner. The

1994 Conference will be held in Adelaide, South Australia. The Biennial General Meet

ing was also held as part of the Conference.

The Executive was re-elected.

Of concern to the IAML Australian

Branch in the last two years has been the

trend to reduce or subsume music library services into the more general library ser

vices in institutions. This has occurred or

been proposed in a number of libraries in

Australia. The most notable is the closure of

the Music Reading Room in the National

Library of Australia, and the integration of

its collections and staff into the General Ref

erence Services area. More and more the

LAML Australian Branch will need to provide

support for music libraries faced with these

reductions in services.

A national library forum entitled Towards

Federation 2001 was held in Canberra in

March 1992 at which strategies for the col

lection, bibliographic control, access, and

preservation of Australian materials were

discussed and resolutions passed. IAML

Australian Branch was acknowledged as one

of the organizations to be consulted in a

number of the resolutions.

Two representatives from Australia at

tended the 1992 IAML Conference in Frank

furt. They were Prue Neidorf, Music Librar

ian, National Library of Australia and Sue

Tronsor, ABC Federal Music Librarian,

Sydney.

The U.S. Branch held its 1992 annual meet

ing in Baltimore, Maryland, in February in conjunction with the annual meeting of the

Music Library Association (MLA). The board met earlier the same week and again

during the IAML annual conference in

Frankfurt.

We have experimented with various ini

tiatives this year for increasing our member

ship. We sent IAML brochures with a cov

ering letter to new members of MLA inviting them to join IAML. We also issued special invitations to a small group of MLA mem

bers who are not yet IAML members to

attend our 1993 annual meeting in San Fran

cisco. Finally, we are encouraging our MLA

colleagues who are not yet affiliated with

IAML to attend the 1994 IAML annual con

ference in Ottawa. The North American site

offers prospective members from the U.S.

an opportunity to experience a IAML con

ference with a smaller investment in travel

than a more distant site would require. Our Archives Committee, chaired by one

of our Members-at-large, John Shepard, has

drafted a letter that will be sent soon to

selected current and former members of our

branch soliciting any papers they may have

for our archive at the University of Mary

land-College Park.

A proposal to divide the office of Secre

tary-treasurer into two separate offices was

approved by the membership in the fall of

1992 and will take effect in 1996. New of ficers elected at the same time to serve

from 1993-96 were: Ruth Henderson, Pres

ident; Robert Follet, Secretary-treasurer; and David Sommerfield, Member-at-large. Neil Ratliff will continue to serve on the

board, moving to the position of Past-presi

dent, and John Roberts will continue his

term as Member-at-large. Our two IAML

board members, Lenore Coral and Don Rob

erts, will also continue to serve on our

board.
