The late Judge Sherrill Halbert was appointed to the federal bench in September of 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. 17rom 1954 to 1961. Judge Ilalbert was the only federal judge sitting full time in Sacramento, then a divisional office or the Northern District of California. When the Eastern District of California was cre· ated Oil March 18, 1966, Judge Halbert was one of the three original judges serving the newly formed district. 'raking senior statns in 1969, Judge Halbert continued to hear cases until his retirement from the bench in 1985.

Throughout his lifetime. Judge Halbert was a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln and. over the years. he acquired a comprehensive and valuable collectioll of the works and writings of the Great Emancipator. The Lincoln Collection contains hundreds of writings, letters, manuscripts, bOOKS, medallions, photos and other sig­nificant historical elements of the lite and work of Lincoln. The entire collection \vas a personal gift to the McCieorge School of Law by the Halberts. who were major benefactors of that institution. llaving displayed portions of the complete collection over the years, the school has graciously loaned the Lincoln Collection to the United States District Court in hopes that it may be enjoyed by the public.

The Lincoln Collection is prominently displayed in the library foyer of the new federal courthouse in Sacramento and can be viewed during the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.IIl., Monday through Friday.
