i’ve h

aD SaTC hello to all, i hope you had a great and safe halloween. i’ve never been too crazy about dressing up. Maybe because as a kid my mom didn’t really let me get dressed up and walk around the city at night asking for candy. So i was the kid passing out the candy and eating the left overs. a few pounds and several years later here i am. Yet, here comes my favorite holiday this month; Thanksgiving is what i believe the best of them all. You get to spend time with family around the table and you get to really enjoy all the great food. Christmas is good, yet with all the gift giving is all seems very commercial. Thanksgiving is really go-ing back to basics; family time, food and no expectations. we have a new contributor to the magazine - Sara Conrado. i love to see young people getting involved and making a posi-tive impact. yet something that’s been missing is gentlemen submitting columns. so please guys, don’t let the ladies have all the pages and please submit your opinions to [email protected] and see them here next month. have a great Thanksgiving everyone and thank you all for being loyal readers and wonderful sponsors this year.

thoughts i’ve haD

ok, this is the second column i have written for this issue. the first one tended to be a lot of venting about a few things that were getting on my nerves. veiled thoughts and finger pointing aren’t really in my nature, so i decided to rewrite the column.what concerns me more and more these days is our apparent lack of concern for one another.before all the hate mail starts to arrive, i want to clarify what i mean by that statement. it isn’t that we don’t really care about the well being and safety of our friends, neighbors and associates; it is the underlying fear of failure that seems to be prodding some folks to look out only for their selves abandoning the notion of helping others.i start each day writing in my journal, reading my bible and praying about the day ahead. within each morning prayer i ask god to bring me someone to help that day. it never fails. it may be something as simple as being a sounding board sitting quietly and listening. in my business i get to know a lot of people, i learn about any number of programs and projects available. it’s because of this and because of my

daily request, that i have been able to connect people with the people and programs that will benefit them the most.i have been lucky in my business and in my life, but i don’t for a minute assume that i have accomplished it on my own.i always say opening my business was a total god thing, and i say that because i believe it. i also believe that any success i have had here is due to the support and encouragement i have received from some of my fellow business people and my community and family. That is why i have to say time and again how important it is to support one another. if it our goal to have only our own business succeed and the heck with everyone else i’m afraid we just won’t get very far. There is so much going on in our county right now, and if we can all work together to be a part of it i am sure we will all survive. not only will we survive the economic pressures we face, but if along the way we build our character and our respect for the welling being of those around us we will not only survive we will excel.Just a thought………..

Sex and The

He’s no Don Juan.grant’s impressiveness began with the attire he wore and ended… with the attire he wore. his Movado watch and dockers seem a little unnecessary anyway, i thought as he rambled on between bites of steak and mashed potatoes. and i didn’t like the way that he had walked across the street from the parking lot to the restaurant about three steps ahead of me - not very gentlemanly. i didn’t even know what first dates were supposed to be like but i was guessing this wasn’t it.

as grant kept talking about business and cars and all of the things a girl could care less about, i couldn’t help but stare at the way his deep blue eyes sparkled with animation. and he had these perfect lips that just begged for attention. he had a habit of clearing his throat a lot though; that was a little bit annoying. that’s when i realized that they must all be wrong. there’s no way this guy is some casanova, i thought. But damn this chicken’s good.

The kiss off.i knew that i would have hell to pay when i got home from my first date with grant. my roommates would not be happy at all, but i didn’t care. they were just being protective. grant parked his car in front of my place and walked me up to the front door. as i thanked him, he leaned in towards my face. i turned my head just in time for him to plant one on my cheek. his face flushed and i quickly said “have a good night,” and walked in-

side. Was i supposed to let him kiss me? i wondered. i didn’t know the proper date protocol, i just knew i didn’t feel like kissing a perfect stranger.

truth be told i don’t think that grant crossed my mind again…at least not until the next day when he called to ask me out again. he wanted to take me to a movie. Sometimes i look back and i wonder if i would have made a different choice about that second date, would my life have gone differently? “Well? he asked. are you interested?” i paused before giving him my answer and i don’t know who was surprised by it more. . .

OpiniOn

i have to be honest and let everyone know: about a week ago i just crashed. Completely slept the whole weekend. i was just burned out completely from all the wonderful, busy and exciting things October brought. yet i knew i had to keep going and finish the year.last month, woodland Community College, United news Magazine and colusa casino resort coordinated and sponsored colusa county’s first Business showcase. it was great to see the community turning out and seeing the business being showcased. i expected people to show up but never in the numbers that we saw. For our first year we had about 200 guests show up. that was really good i thought. also in October the north valley hispanic Chamber of Commerce had their annual award Dinner gala; this year’s theme was “espectaculo gigante.” i was very honored and humbled to receive the Business-man of the Year award a.k.a. The amigo of the Year. it was great to feel like all the hard work was being acknowledged. we had danc-ers, performers and some of the best Mexican food i have tasted, provided by Colusa Casino resort. again thank you for the honor and the wonderful evening we had. The last week of October, the week after my weekend crash, i almost felt depressed in the sense that there wasn’t much going on after those two major events. however that whole depression lasted for about 12 hours because my end of the year calendar quickly started filling up. i had the opportunity to bid on the official guide to the colusa county Farm show to the 44th District agricultural associa-tion in october. though i was not selected to be the official outlet to the publication, it was really a great experience and opportunity to have a chance to bid on the project something that really hadn’t happened much in the last few years, i’d like to congratulate the person selected by the Farm show committee to produce the official

guide, Mr. James nair, from J.nair Media. he is truly a very talented person and a very motivated, community minded individual and i know Mr. nair will do an awesome job. i have been attending a lot of meetings this past month also, trying to show support to all organizations in our county. i got a chance to sit on a Friends of Music meeting last month. Talk about a group who really cares about the students. Mr. phenecie really is an out-standing teacher who goes way beyond the call of duty. i realize that times are hard right now, people have lost jobs. however our students are our future, education is the key. we have to support groups like these that help cultivate positive creative environments in the schools. Creative youths grow up to be not just designers, musicians and artist. Creative people are an essential key to solving our economic struggles because of their ability to “think outside the box.” organizations such as these are always in need of your sup-port and volunteers. i’d like to echo Kathy craigo’s article about caring for one another. caring doesn’t necessarily mean cash. emotional and moral sup-port, to me, is more important than monetary support. businesses need to help one another by providing services at a discounted rate to each other or even just offering some advice or answer and help someone trouble shoot a problem without expecting something in return. if you know your neighbor is unemployed and or strug-gling, how about you invite them over for diner next time? You never know, that meal, that gesture of compassion and care might make a huge difference in their day. Colusa County is a great place to live, grow and prosper, not because of the location, climate or local economy, but because of the awe-some people that live here and that’s what keeps me going.

herbal deTOx wrap, perFeCT FOr The winTer SeaSOn.

The herbal wrap experience is something many love but is not for every-one. Those who would not be a good canidate for such treatments due to high risk of complications are those with high/low blood pressure, pregnant, diabetes or certain allergies. These types of wraps do nOT promise to help you lose weight and inches. They are however extremely effective in helping the body rid itself of toxins, poisons, and excess fluid and of course full body relaxation. also a relief for sore, aching muscles and muscle tension, which may be causing pain. with all the varieties of treatments out their i can really only explain in depth the one i offer to my clients.what can you expect when you come in for a detox treatment?the treatment i offer is a 2 hour session. you will first drink a hot tea with a special blend of detoxifying herbs. as you drink the tea the aro-masteam sauna will be heating with a detoxifying aroma. You will sit in the sauna, which is anywhere from 100 - 106 degrees Fahrenheit. as you “pre-heat” in the aromasteam for 10-15 min. i will be prepping the massage table. This detoxifying experience uses hot herbal infused sheets that soak in raw herbs at around 165 degrees for several hours. why does the heat play such a large role in the detox? The purpose is

to raise the body core temperature and increase perspiration, which aids in the releasing of impurities from your system. The large number of herbs and herb combinations are appropriate for the herbal wrap. the combination produce these effects: diuretic - (inducing elimination through the kidneys) diaphoretic - (inducing elimination through the skin) febrifuge - (inducing a feverish state in the body) all together creating a purifying effect for the blood and skin. Common raw herbs used in a detox could consist of: allspice, calendula petal, clove stems, eucalyptus, ginger root, oatmeal and rosemary. Once your time is up in the aromasteam you will then be wrapped in a mummy-like fashion in the herb infused sheet, thermal insulating blan-ket, and wool blanket. This is where you will lay for twenty minutes. the last and final touch to the whole treatment, a one hour massage to complete the total cleansing and relaxation experience. So in a nutshell you have a run down of what will take place during a detox wrap session. if you have any further questions or would like to experience a detox session you can contact:Wendy @ touch of health (530) 933 - 3933 Bt appointment only and gift certificates are available

COLUSA INDUSTRIAL PROPERTIES

Five years ago i certainly hadn’t pictured this. i always as-sumed after graduating from college i would land gently in a far off world where prestigious law firms hired upon first glance and huge corporations opened their arms to new gradu-ates with a warm embrace.i thought earning a bachelor’s degree would open the door to an entire universe of perfect job opportunities and financial abundance waiting to fall into my lap. but as i clutched my diploma and drifted dreamily towards this magical place of effortless employment i realized it existed only in my head.growing up in a household where education is key there was always the understanding that after high school comes college and after college comes independence. but nobody ever really talks about how difficult it is to strike out on your own, even when you finally have that degree in your hand. not to mention how devastating it is to be turned down time and time again after 16+ years of education devoted entirely unto finding a fulfilling and well paying job at the end of it all. Unfortunately the odds seem to be stacked against most americans during tough economical times like these. it seems even worse for recent college grads like me. The unemploy-ment rate is the highest it has been in 26 years and there are 7.2 million less jobs now than there were before the recession began two years ago. These facts make it difficult for many people to hold onto their jobs, let alone find new ones. there are 2.2 million americans with bachelor’s degrees or higher that are currently unemployed. i, however, am one of the lucky unfortunate ones. i have something that many

discouraged college grads do not have; the open and loving embrace of parents willing to house a down trodden victim of the recession’s destructive path. Moving into my childhood bedroom is not what i had envi-sioned for myself and my b.a. in english, but here we are. and in a strange turn of events, it feels very right indeed. after countless rejections and more pity parties than you can imagine, i finally feel like i am in the right place and moving in the right direction. Sometimes all it takes is the determination to keep your chin up and maybe a chance encounter at a coffee shop. This reces-sion is extremely difficult for us americans, and an extreme blow to the egos of us post grads, but it’s nothing we can’t endure if we persist with our hopes highs and our seemingly irrational dreams intact.

From their efforts between august 1st to september 30th, 194 participating organiza-tions received a total of $894,559. the donations came from 2672 individual donors, very close to the number of donors last year. dur-ing the 2007 annie B’s Drive, $869,000 was raised. this brings the total for the three years to more than $3,000,000. this year each organization has received 7% in additional grant funds from the 2009 annie B’s grant Pool through North valley Community Foundation. a complete list of organizations and funds received is available at www.nvcf.org. “considering the state of the economy, we were cautiously optimis-tic,” states alexa valavanis, ceo of North valley community Foun-dation. “however, the community came through! this confirms our belief that this community is capable and willing to support local nonprofits, in spite of the economic downturn. this is solid evidence that our community deeply values the services of our nonprofits, and understands it role in sustaining them.” starting august 1 and ending september 30, the 194 participating organizations in butte, glenn, Tehama and Colusa counties were ac-tively seeking donations from their supporters. all local nonprofits were eligible to get involved. donors were encouraged to give with the incentive of grant funds as a percentage match for donations made through the annie B’s community Drive. one hundred percent of all annie B’s donations go directly to participating non-profits. the annie B’s grant funds are made possible through a donation of $250,000 (over five years) from anonymous donors. the commu-nity Foundation was able to add an additional $20,000 this year to the grant pool, through the support of local businesses. this year’s co-challengers and supporters included, holbrook’s Furniture clear-ance, P,g&e, matson and isom accounting, smucker’s Quality Bev-erages, strategic investment group (stewart murrary), tittle & co accounting, Safor Corporation, Soroptimists international of Chico, the noon exchange Club of Chico, rolling hills Casino, lundberg Family Farms, wells Fargo bank, nantucket home Store, dick Molin, attorney, denny Forland, attorney, and aaron Stewart, attorney. “our co-challengers and sponsors make the annie B’s Drive pos-sible,” according to valavanis. “these individuals and firms made contributions, all of which are distributed to the 194 participating organizations in four counties, through the grant pool. it is the in-centive of the grant pool that mobilizes nonprofits to ask and their donors to give.” this is the third year for the annie B’s community Drive, with north valley Community Foundation challenging our region with $500,000 in percentage grants (over five years) for local nonprofits.

the annie B’s community Drive is designed to encourage giving to local nonprofits, thus helping these organizations move towards self-sufficiency.in addition to increasing support for local nonprofit organizations, the goal of annie B’s community Drive is to help organizations fulfill their missions in sustainable ways and to increase support from do-nations. Many participating organizations will use this opportunity to create and/or increase their endowment funds at NvcF.
