hello to all,all i can say is this is one of our best editions to date. This month we have the honor of featuring the lovely anastasia cristler, our 2009 miss colusa county. When i had the plea-sure of interviewing anastasia i learned that she was a very determined, inspiring young woman. in her interview she allows our readers a glimpse of what her plans are for the next year as miss Colusa County. She is a very bright young woman. i would like to also thank Kathleen moran, our Colusa County Clerk and recorder for assisting us in securing our location for Anastasia’s photo shoot. the photos were taken at our beautiful, historic county court house. located in downtown Colusa, the courthouse dates back to 1861. it seems there have been a lot of things going on in the news recently both nationally and locally. i would like to applaud all the citizens of Williams who stood up in support of the findings found in the grand jury report. it takes a lot of courage to stand up to your local officials and demand justice. however, if we don’t do it who will? i would also like to applaud the colusa county sun herald for the well covered story. it is in times like this that our media outlets have a responsibility to present all the facts to the public. Again, for all the Williams citizens who stood up against “conflict of interest” thAnK you. For those who said “how can you not have a conflict of interest?” shame on you! We will nOT STand FOr ThaT. as americans we are better than that. we have a voice and we will be heard. economic outreach services (eos) in colusa has expanded to include it services to provide qualified computer technical as-sistance.After just nine months in business, eos has met a number of the goals it set when it first opened last october.Owners ben Felt and Cheri white commented earlier this week that the sole task of eos was to create new jobs in colusa County.earlier in July, the team met that goal by forming iT Services as an expansion of eos thereby creating a new job in colusa County. John newlin, an experienced computer technician has joined the eOS team and its iT Services division.“We recognized a need in the county for an experienced com-puter technician,” said White.While eos is a business consulting firm, the company has a strong interest in the community as a whole. Felt and White have made considerable strides in providing business education to existing businesses, while seeking to create new jobs and explore grant options for countywide projects. it will be newlin’s responsibility to provide quality technical assistance in Colusa County. his services will include technical assistance for pC and maC systems, desktops, laptops and PDA’s, peripherals connectiv-

good day colusa! my name is Angel Diaz, and i proudly serve as President of the north Valley hispanic chamber of commerce (nVhcc). the north Valley hispanic chamber of commerce (nVhcc) is an organization that has been part of the north valley communities for a little over a year. in this short time we have been able to establish our reputation as a leader in building relationships and creating opportunities in today’s new diversified market. the north Valley hispanic chamber of commerce offers its his-panic and non-hispanic members competitiveness through the many programs it provides, including seminars, networking op-portunities, marketing consultations, referral networking and advocacy. We are based in marysville, and the majority of our current members do business in the yuba-Sutter area. Our efforts to ex-pand the activities of the nVhcc include contacting, meeting and formulating plans of action to set up chapters in other cities in the north Valley that require assistance in the economic develop-ment of hispanic-owned businesses, and increase the opportuni-ties for business relationships with the community at large. one of the towns and counties we have targeted is colusa!Why colusa? anastasia Cristler, the reigning miss Colusa County tells any young woman who may want to enter the competition in the future to do it. “you’ll regret if you don’t, and you won’t regret it if you do,” she said recently in an interview with UniTed.cristler was crowned the 2009 miss colusa county during the June Colusa County Fair. Since that time, she has continued to become more involved in the communities of the county, and she has worked at doing her best to represent the county.she said she entered the pageant when her best friend and former miss colusa county Ashley Driver encouraged her to do so. “Ashley inspired me to try and i also consider myself a ‘people person’, she said.she said she has always thought she’d like to be a teacher and make an impact on people’s lives. her mother Annie Doyle is a photography leader in her 4-h group, so she suspects that may be one reason she would like to teach.When asked why she thinks she won the title, cristler replied she be-lieves it was because she had more public speaking experience. “i have extensive experience in job interviews with Future Farmers of America (FFA). i felt confident going into the pageant knowing i had this previ-ous knowledge,” she said.Although she had that confidence, she admitted that it can be very in-timidating being on stage with those bright lights, knowing everyone is watching you.While the pageant seems to be almost effortless on stage the night of the event, the contestants work very hard to prepare for it.Cristler recalled that the rehearsals, which began in may, were no easy task. “we had to learn a whole dance routine, we had to learn to walk the ‘pageant walk’, and how to talk on stage,” she said. there were numerous meetings and rehearsals, practice interviews,” said. “We had three days to learn our dance and one week to perfect,” she added.All of the rehearsals were held on the ‘hot’ stage. A week prior to the pageant each contestant was interviewed by the judges. “they asked about everything from school to more personal questions, she said.next year, cristler would be eligible to compete for miss california, but the senior at Pierce high school has not made up her mind if she will go for that title.After graduation she plans to attend Butte college and transfer to a four-year college pursuing a career as an Ag teacher.of competing for miss california, cristler said it would take a lot of time, and it might be too much with her education plans. “it is a possibility though,” she added.Commenting on the most recent issues with miss California and the ordeal over her comments regarding same-sex marriage, Cristler said everyone has a right to his or her opinion, but maybe is wasn’t the best setting for the question to have been asked.on the county level, one of her interview questions was; “What was one of most important family values your parents taught you?”

cristler replied that having a younger brother, her parents always taught them to not argue or fight with each other. “Family is important. We only have each other. We always have our meals together,” she said. right now, she is focusing on be a role model and a good representative of the county. she’s a very involved young woman. she is her chapter reporter in FFA, 4-h vice president, on the volleyball squad and in the church choir at holy Cross Catholic Church. Cristler also works for the arbuckle Park and recreation as a coach for the soccer camp, coach for preschool basketball and referee for K-3. during the summer she is a life guard and teaches swimming lessons.cristler said that she tries to compete in public speaking competitions as much as possible, and she also belongs to the dance team for the woodland School of dance.young women from all over the county compete in the miss colusa county Pageant. cristler said that when they first arrived there was that natural ‘sports rivalry’ between the towns, but by the time the weeks progressed up to the night of the pageant, they were all routing for one another. “We were giving each other pointers, we became a good fam-ily and we knew each other as girls, not as schools,” she said.When her name was called as the winner, cristler said she thought; “that’s me.” “it was a wow moment. there just isn’t a way to explain it.”She said winning the title has allowed her to meet tons of other girls. “it also has definitely made me be more aware about what i do when i leave home,” she said. “i’ve already had a little girl tell me she liked my crown and that she wanted to be just like me.”As miss colusa county, cristler hopes to have the opportunity to become more involved as an advocate against drunk driving.“i actually lost a friend due to drunk driving in June,” she said. “i’d like to use my title to do some public speaking on the issue and explain to kids that this is not a game,” she added. She said the biggest issue for teens in the county is that there is not a lot for young people to do. she suggests that not having things to do in free time could attribute to fact that we have gangs and so much underage drinking. cristler describes colusa county as a ‘tight knit’ agriculture community where everyone knows everyone else. she said she is representative of the county being involved in FFa and horseback riding. “i am active whether it is outdoors in mud and jeans or indoors in a dress,” she added.Cristler credits her grandmother louis harrison along with teachers mr. green, ms roady, and mr. marsh as being great role models for her in her studies and in her life. she said the pageant was a wonderful experience. “i’d especially like to thank my dresser and Karen and Devin our pageant directors,” she said.

i can’t seem to get over the magnitude of this 787 Billion Dol-lar bail-out scam that our politicians fell for and couldn’t wait to approve. it was so important and needed immediately if our country was to be saved. i guess that’s why it had to be rushed through Congress in the middle of the night, without even being read by our esteemed political leaders.

i “googled” million, Billion, and trillion and here is what i learned: a million seconds in time is 13 days ago. a million dollars passes through the u.s. treasury every five (5) seconds. a billion seconds in time is 31 years. Since late afternoon yester-day a billion dollars has passed through the u.s. treasury. A tril-lion seconds in time is 31,688 years. that puts us back to 29,679 years before christ. neanderthals walked the plains of europe a trillion seconds ago. Folks, our politicians just saddled us with a debt equal to seventy-eight (78%) percent of a trillion dollars. if a dollar was represented by a second of time, this would be the equivalent of 24,938 yeArs worth of seconds.

on a more positive note, congratulations are in order to colusa for the fantastic 4th of July celebration on main street. the fireworks were spectacular, people were everywhere, and to my knowledge everyone had fun. From both an economic Development and chamber of commerce perspective this event was a success. the local economy was stimulated by the dollars brought into the

county by visitors. Local commerce benefitted from the circula-tion of dollars for goods and services. But more importantly, during these tough economic times the local community came together in support of one another and enjoyed a very special day. Thanks to everyone involved and to all of you in attendance, you made the day a success.

this August 20th will mark the end of colusa’s summer concert series “music in the Parks”. closing the series of musical events will be the Colusa high School Jazz band. The Jazz band will take the stage at 6:30pm and will be performing a wide and extensive variety of songs this year. “We are currently working on 24 songs” said musical director michael

Among the list songs that will be performed are; Birdland, in the mood, misty, american patrol, Ja-da, Somewhere Out There, Sing sing sing, god Bless the usA, A nightingale sang in Berkeley square, tequila and many more. “our instrumentation is still adjusting” added Phenicie. however this year the jazz ensemble includes 4 altos, 2 tenors, 1 baritone, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 bass guitar, 2 piano players and 3 drummers, not to mention one or two vocalists. Phenicie commented that the jazz band has been rehearsing throughout the summer. the jazz band also has a busy year ahead. “As far as con-certs for the year, that’s still up in the air, but it looks like there is a good possibility the music department will be working with the colusa casino again this year” said Phenicie. Phenicie explained that performing at the casino in the upcoming school year will be some past superstars in the music field including: Lynn Anderson (“i never promised you a rose garden”), sonny turner (lead singer with the Platters in the 50’s and 60’s), and Paul Williams (singer,
