HISTORY1946After World War II, European children face famine and disease. UNICEF is created in December 1946 by the United Nations to provide food, clothing and health care to them

1953The UN General Assembly extends UNICEF’s mandate indefinitely. UNICEF begins a successful global campaign against yaws, a disfiguring disease affecting millions of children, and one that can be cured with penicillin.

HISTORY

1954The movie star Danny Kaye becomes UNICEF’s “Ambassador at Large.” His film Assignment Children, about UNICEF’s work in Asia, is seen by more than 100 million people.

1959The UN General Assembly adopts the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which defines children’s rights to protection, education, health care, shelter and good nutrition.

HISTORY1961Following more than a decade of focus on child health issues, UNICEF expands its interests to address the needs of the whole child. Thus begins an abiding concern with education, starting with support to teacher training and classroom equipment in newly independent countries

1965 UNICEF is awarded the 1965 Nobel Peace Prize “for the promotion of brotherhood among nations.”

HISTORY1979- International Year of the ChildMarked by celebrations around the world, people and organizations reaffirm their commitment to children’s rights.

1982UNICEF launches a drive to save the lives of millions of children each year.  The ‘revolution’ is based on four simple, low-cost techniques: growth monitoring, oral rehydration therapy, breastfeeding and immunization.

HISTORY

1989The Convention is adopted by the UN General Assembly. It enters into force in September 1990. It becomes the most widely- and rapidly-accepted human rights treaty in history.

1998The Council’s first open debate on the subject reflects the strength of international concern over the effects of war on children.

HISTORY2001The Global Movement for Children begins mobilizing every citizen of every nation to change the world with children. The Say Yes for Children campaign builds on this momentum, with millions of children and adults around the world pledging their support for critical actions to improve children’s lives

2002A landmark Special Session of the UN General Assembly was convened to review progress since the World Summit for Children in 1990 and re-energize global commitment to children's rights. It was the first such Session devoted exclusively to children and the first to include them as official delegates

100% VACCINIAMOLI TUTTIVaccinations are one of the most effective means of protecting children's health, and have contributed in the past 20 years to halve the overall rate of infant mortality. But even today, one in five children who are excluded because they live in remote areas or belong to social groups particularly poor or marginal. Every 20 seconds in the world, a child dies because it lacks the proper vaccine protection. The face of the campaign UNICEF "100% - Vacciniamoli all" are alongside UNICEF in this commitment to "sound the alarm" and accelerate efforts to reach that 20% of the world's children still excluded from the benefits of immunization basis.

ACCELERATED STRATEGY FOR SURVIVAL AND EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT(ACSD)

The West and Central Africa is one of the regions of the world in which children live in the most vulnerable situations. This is why UNICEF has launched several years in 8 countries of this area (Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Togo and - since 2009 - Chad and Central African Republic), a program to combat infant mortality called "accelerated strategy for survival and early childhood development" (ACSD), based on the reactivation and improvement of local health services, training of medical staff and families for basic care to children, and on 'provision of a "package" integrated life-saving assistance to childbirth and regular prenatal visits, vaccination campaigns, distribution of mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide, administration of iodized salt, vitamin A supplements for anemia, oral rehydration therapy and supplies essential medical.

CHILDREN'S RIGHTS

UNICEF Italy work for the implementation of children's rights and to promote positive changes in the long run for children and adolescents living on the Italian territory. UNICEF activities are intended to influence the Italian institutions (Government, Parliament, regions and municipalities) to implement laws, policies and practices comply with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, framework of UNICEF in Italy and in the world. To promote the rights of UNICEF Italy actively supports the creation of places and moments of discussion and joint working with other organizations and associations, as well as with institutions that are able to affect the lives of children and adolescents living in Italy.
