Spiritual Healing Group

Monday, August 8 6:30-7:30 P.M. (North) Sanctuary Prayer Corner

The purpose of the Spiritual Healing Group is to share experiences of God and support one another with healing energy using

the Christian tradition “Laying on of Hands“.

Monday, July 11 three persons attended the first meeting of the Spiritual Healing Group. Each related an experience in which

they were aware of a Spiritual Presence. One told of being increasingly aware of support and guidance in everyday life.

Another related that an off-duty skilled doctor came to the hospital, unexpectedly, just in time to save the life of a critically ill

relative. The third remembered the severe pain of shingles was reduced when energy from the Divine came through the hands

of an Energy Practitioner.

During and after a short guided meditation, both the Receiving partner (sitting comfortably in a chair) and the Giving partner

(standing behind the Receiver with hands on the Receiver’s shoulders) felt “security, warmth, inclusiveness and peace”.

For 300 years or more, early Christians lived in community using “Laying on of Hands” as an act of compassion. It was part of

their daily life. “ Laying on of Hands” is one of many ways to connect a person to the Spiritual Source of energy needed for life,

growth and healing. As Christians, we call this Divine Source of Life “God” “Jesus” and “Holy Spirit“. Jesus is quoted in

John 14:12 “In truth I tell you, he who has faith in me will do what I am doing; and he will do greater things still because I am

going to the Father”.

Advances in science suggest that humans are whole creatures in which spirit, emotions, mind and body cannot be separated.

An improvement or dis-ease in one area can affect the others. If you recall being physically ill, discouraged, frightened, grief

stricken, or separated from God, you may also remember that in addition to medical treatment or counseling, supportive

friends and the prayer chain helped you heal.

Listening to others and experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit in “Laying on of Hands” on Monday, August 8 will

strengthen your faith. All are invited !

Review of Pastor Glenn’s New Book, God Incidents

I confess that my favorite part of going to church is a good sermon. I look forward to a thought provoking weekly message more than the comfort of traditional worship, the fellowship, or even singing in the choir (although that’s a close second, thanks to Jean). If you share my predilection, you will love God Incidents, Real-Life Stories to Strengthen and Restore Your Faith (Ebook Mybook LLC, Copyright © 2016), by our own Rev. Dr. Glenn M. Wagner.

At Church of the Dunes you can count on Glenn to stand and deliver from the pulpit -- or more likely while pacing the carpeted apron in front – almost every Sunday. He is a sincere and gifted communicator who gets the grey matter moving no matter where you come from, theologically speaking. But like preachers everywhere his message must be trimmed to fit the allotted time slot. It’s not Glenn’s fault, and I can tell he often has more to say on the subject at hand.

God Incidents frees Glenn from the constraints of the clock. The chapters are very much like his sermons; finely polished stories filled with personal anecdotes, historical insight, and useful commentary on scripture. But the printed page allows him take us as far as the lessons need to go.

Why do bad things to happen to good people? Why should we believe that existence is more than a freak accident? How do we profess our faith in a manner that is helpful and not off-putting? How can a sinner and doubter (like me) be helpful to those who are ignorant, hurting or in need? These are just some of the questions that are examined in God Incidents. Glenn makes strong arguments for what he believes are the answers. But being a good writer, he leaves it up to the readers to ultimately work things out for ourselves.

After you read and enjoy God Incidents, pass it on to another inquiring soul.

Youth Ministry Update

By Ashley Boersma, Director of Youth Ministry

It's the wonderful time of year the students get time off from school and they get to spend their summers doing all sorts of different activities: sports camps, family vacations, summer jobs, hanging out with friends, going to the beach, mission trip, church camp, and summer youth group activities, etc. We sent four youth and two adults on a mission trip and numerous students are going to church camp this summer. I am so thankful that our youth want to take time out of their summer to grow deeper in their faith and to serve others. That is so awesome! Here is some of what they experienced and enjoyed about their mission trip or camp:

Brooke Zellman: My favorite part about camp would have to be connecting with people and God on a deeper level. There were a lot of activities where you got to share your experiences and you got to see that you're not alone, which was pretty cool. The whole week was about lowering your water line and allowing yourself to just let everything go. When I got home I felt refreshed and I don't think I could have felt that way without going to camp. Also there was this really cool activity where there was colored shaving cream on a twister board, and that was one of the highlights. It was so fun, there was color everywhere and people running around just having a great time!

Lynsey Cutting: My group served at a children's center (can't remember the name of it), Dat House, and Wheeler Thrift Store. Dat House is a really cool organization. The building used to be a strip club, and this guy Brandon and some other neighbors worked to get it shut down. Then they polled the neighbors to ask what they wanted the building to be used for and they wanted a community center, so they are gradually working on making it a place to give back to the community. They want to have an after school program for kids, I believe they are starting that in the fall. They are starting a weekly community lunch - we were there on the first day of that. They are going to turn part of the building into a coffee shop and use the money they make through that to be a self-sustaining organization.

The day we volunteered at Dat House, we worked in a community garden down the street that had been vandalized the week before. Someone had gone through and pulled out most of the vegetables in a way that they weren't able to be eaten. The community came together and donated vegetables to re-plant and money to help put it back together. We helped plant and make it pretty again. The goal was to make it better than it was before and show that this is a community effort.

Where I saw God the most was just in the work these organizations are doing for the community. We met some really great people who are doing amazing things for their community and people who need it. It also reminded me that we have organizations like these back at home that need volunteers and there are plenty of opportunities to serve at home.

Brendan Kelly: Really enjoyed the evening program that was a scavenger hunt around Indianapolis because it gave him as chance to see more of the city where they were serving.

Thank you so much for all of the love and support for our youth. These experiences wouldn't be possible without you!

Thank you so much for all of your love, support, gifts, flowers, and prayers as we welcome Charlotte Louise into our lives on June 21st. She was 7 lbs., 13 oz. and 20 1/2 inches long. Charlotte's nickname is Charlie. She is named after my grandfathers, my uncle and my brother. She is doing very well and big brother Josiah is adjusting well to having a baby sister. Much love, Ashley

Hidden Treasures Family VBS

By Laura Burns, Director of Children’s Ministries

June 20-22 we had 83 people attend our Family VBS. Parents,

grandparents and their children and grandchildren came together for

three nights of faith, family and fun.

On the first day we reaffirmed our faith, acknowledging that we are all

children of God: from the tallest to the shortest, from the oldest to the

youngest--- we are all children of God.

On the second night we grew in our faith as a family, walking the

labyrinth was a powerful experience for many!

On the last night we reaffirmed our commitment to share God’s love

with our community.

Our mission project was to help Family Promise families who were moving into a new home have cleaning

supplies. Families helping families. With the supplies that families brought in during VBS and your support, the

Buckets-of-Love were overflowing. We filled five full large Rubbermaid bins—these supplies will bless many

families.

The Hidden Treasures were the many God moments throughout: for 35% of the attending children this was their

first VBS ever. Of the many families who came and the joy and the memories they made together, one child’s key

God sighting was “VBS is not just for kids, it’s for families!” If anything, we under-estimated the impact having the

family together would have on everyone. Time to journey together in God’s Word meant so much to the kids and

adults.

My God moment was experiencing the church family that

came together to volunteer their time and talents to make

this VBS possible. Since the families were attending the

volunteers couldn’t be parents or grandparents, and the

youth were out of town on their mission trip. We had over

50 volunteers come together to serve our families during

VBS--who so generously shared their time and talents to

make family VBS possible: welcoming, cooking, serving,

and leading.

And thank you to the many financial gifts that made this

family VBS possible. It was amazing to come together to

share our prayers, presence, gifts, witness, and service to

be one as a church family, one in Christ. I hope we can find

other ways and opportunities to come together as one

church family, children of God, brothers and sisters in

Christ.
