Dear Friends,

When I look at the calendar, it doesn’t seem possible

that nearly two months have passed since my arrival as

your new Senior Pastor. I have enjoyed every moment that

I have shared with you. The time has been well spent. And,

you have been so welcoming, so kind.

Let me tell you what I appreciate about you.

I appreciate that you wear your name tag when you

are in the building. It has helped me so much to begin to

put names and faces together. It is a simple kindness – but

it is such an important act of caring. Thank you!

I appreciate that when you have forgotten your

name tag, you always tell me your name and promise to

wear your name tag next time. Thank you for being so

conscientious.

I appreciate all the good wishes, cards, notes, and,

most of all, prayers for our family during daughter’s

surgery. You have been our steadfast Companions in Christ

and we have been grateful for the support and love.

I appreciate the commitment that you have to our

church. I appreciate that you are committed to be here, in

worship, unless you are sick or out of town. And, I am

truly inspired by all the ways that you seek to be in mission

and service. Each week, I discover a new piece of ministry

that someone in the church is doing. From setting up

communion on a Sunday, to programming the slides for

Worship, to making sure all the pew racks in the Sanctuary

are neat and tidy, to caring for the grounds of our campus,

to setting up and preparing meals for the HOPE luncheons,

to practicing a summer anthem or preparing a special offer-

tory to make our worship beautiful, to visiting others in our

church family and in the community to ensure they know

they are included in God’s love and grace. Each and every

day, people are in and out of our church building, doing

ministry in great and small ways. We are a busy place,

even in the summer, which gives me joy!

I appreciate your patience and even forgiveness. It takes time to figure out the “culture”

in a new place when you are the new kid on the block – (how a church operates, its particular

traditions, and who does what – and when.) You have been so kind; and even forgiving when

I have stumbled because I did not know a particular routine. Thank you, for being so gracious.

Most of all, I appreciate how you have made my transition to my new church home a

wonderful blessing and I am honored to serve with all of you.

Something you should know about me: I ask a lot of questions -- particularly when I am

faced with making a major decision regarding our life together as a congregation. Even though,

as the Sr. Minister, I am charged (ordained) with ordering the life of the congregation, it is my

personal leadership style to seek out the history, context and possible solutions to matters that

challenge us. And so, to help provide some input and wisdom as we move forward; don’t be

surprised if, on occasion, you find a short survey question in your bulletin, newsletter, or email.

For example, upon my arrival at UMCGV, one of the first questions I received concerned

worship times and number of services for the coming year. For that reason, I suggested to our

Worship Chair, Sally Baltimore and the Worship Team that we conduct a brief survey regarding

this matter. Thank you, for responding to Sally and her team in such a timely and gracious

manner!

Something else you should know about me --I am a process person; I like to work

concerns through a process and I value the ability to come to consensus when important

decisions must be made. I am not afraid to make hard decisions and will -- when consensus

avoids us. However, I prefer to seek consensus, when possible. What’s more, I will always

seek, through God’s wisdom and guidance, to act in the Church’s best interest.

As we move forward, I know there will be times when we will be faced with concerns

or challenges or decisions. I wanted to share how I respond to such matters so that you can be

peaceful in your hearts, minds, and spirits. The way I see it: we’re all on this wonderful

journey of faith together. Each one of us possesses a piece of the plan that God has in mind to

enact here at UMCGV. We are all part of one another’s story, strength and hope. And when

we work together, God is pleased with the results.

Thank you, friends, for a beautiful two months with you. You are an amazing

congregation and I can’t wait to see where we go together from here!

Asia's story...

Asia is a 27-year-old woman who established a school.

There are 95 students enrolled in the school, and 47% of

them are female students. The aim of the school is to help

the students from under-privileged families to achieve

education with high standards.

Asia says she wants to develop inquiring, caring and

knowledgeable individuals who have a positive contribution towards the

overall welfare of the society.

Currently, the biggest challenge is lack of classrooms

and furniture in the school. She has requested an

amount of PKR 100,000 for constructing

additional rooms in the school and for purchasing

classroom furniture.

The United Methodist Church of Green Valley

has contributed $250.00 to Asia’s ministry.

SEPTEMBER MOVIE ~ SUNDAY

SEPT. 30TH ~ AT 2:00 PM Elected to the House of Commons at the age of 21, and

on his way to a successful political career, William

Wilberforce, over the course of two decades, took on the

English establishment and persuaded those in power to

end the inhumane trade of slavery. Albert Finney plays

John Newton, a confidante of Wilberforce who inspires

him to pursue a life of service to humanity.

Romola Garai plays Barbara Spooner, a beautiful and

headstrong young woman who shares Wilberforce's

passion for reform, and who becomes his wife after a

whirlwind courtship. Youssou N'Dour is Olaudah

Equiano. Born in Africa and sent as a slave to the

Colonies, Equiano bought his freedom and made his

home in London, where he wrote a best-selling account

of his life and became a leading figure in the fight to end

the slavery of his fellow countrymen.

WEEKLY CLASS OF TAI CHI FOR HEALTH OFFERED AT UMC

TUESDAYS 12:00 PM IN JOHNSON HALL

Green Valley United Methodist Church is now offering a Tai Chi for Health, Arthritis and

Fall Prevention Class. Tai Chi is a gentle exercise that combines breathing, slow movement

and mental focus. Tai Chi for Health, Arthritis and Fall Prevention (TCHAFA) is a

program developed by Dr. Paul Lam, a family physician and International Tai Chi Gold

Medalist. The Arthritis Foundation USA (www.arthritis.org) says Dr. Lam’s Tai Chi for

Health program “…can improve balance, reduce stress and offer arthritis pain relief.” Our class is led by

Mike Cline, a certified instructor with the Tai Chi for Health Institute. It is open to the public, free of charge,

and meets every Tuesday from 12 noon till 1 o’clock, in Johnson Hall. Stop by and see how Tai Chi can help

Misty was baptized here, at Green Valley Community Church in 1989,

and attended Sunday School regularly. After attending St. Marks and

graduating from U.A., where she helped uphold the Wesley Foundation, she

graduated from Drew Seminary. Misty was Pastor of Sea Bright UMC, on staff at Desert Skies UMC and is

now Associate Pastor of Prescott UMC.

The infections that played havoc with my systems have finally been treated, and I was delighted to worship in church Aug. 12, first time since Easter Sunday. I treasure the Prayer Shawl that was so lovingly knit for me, and I claim God’s love through His many loving hearts and hands here in GV.

United Methodist Transfer: If you are a member of another United Methodist Church, our office will

write for a letter of Transfer.

Transfer from Other Churches: If you are a member of a church other than United Methodist, the

If you are looking for a safe environment where you can ask the questions that you have

always wanted to ask but we're afraid to express your views, the T.A.G. (Talking About God)

class is for you. This class is all about trying to make Christianity relevant in the 21st

Century. This fall, starting on October 7th, we will meet each Sunday in the Fireside Room fol-

lowing the second worship service. Our fall curriculum will be the DVD-based "Living the

Questions 2.0, picking up where we left off in May with Theme 10, "Evil, Suffering & A God

Of Love." The themes change every week and consist of approximately 20 minute video

segments followed by an open dialogue. The video segments consist of conversations with

many leading bible scholars, pastors and religious educators. This series is the brainchild of

two Methodist ministers from Phoenix, AZ, Rev. David Felton and Rev. Jeff Proctor-Murphy.

The Spiritual Growth Corner

With September, our church’s Sunday School classes get back in full swing and the children’s classes, which have gone on all summer are starting a new unit.

Adults enjoyed a 2 week Summer Shorty from Jerry Haas on the Gospel Books. Christian Education will be looking for opportunities to expand that program next summer.

Meanwhile, 6-week series kicks things off for adults on September 2, at the 10:00 time slot with “God’s Messy Family.” It promises to be a most interesting class, so join in if you can! With Pastor Deanna’s knowledgeable suggestions and help, there will be more great opportunities to follow, so keep an eye on your newsletters and bulletins as the year progresses.

There are some fantastic movies in the pipe for our Sunday afternoon viewing pleasure - and remember, there is always FREE POPCORN AND SODAS! Be sure to mark your calendars for the time slot: usually the last Sunday of the month, 2 p.m. in Johnson Hall. The movies will be advertised in advance during Sunday announcements, in bulletins and on posters around the church. If you have a favorite movie with a spiritual/moral lesson, suitable for the whole family, leave a suggestion in the offering plate or in the office mailbox for Christian Education Committee.

We’ll soon be starting to welcome the rest of our church family back from cooler, wetter climes; then there will be even more opportunities for our spiritual growth as the life of our church roars into full swing under the loving guidance of our ‘new’ Pastor, Reverend Deanna Self-Price. With her roots in Christian Education, we are so very blessed!

REPORT FROM THE CHURCH COUNCIL

Regularly scheduled meetings of the Church Council (aka Administrative Council) are on the third Thursday

of the odd numbered months. Meetings are open to all, with voting restricted to those elected to the Council.

July 19 was the first meeting with our new pastor, the Rev. Deanna Self-Price. We began by introducing

ourselves and telling a few stories about ourselves and our church. “Where has God been present to you in

our church?” we pondered. Pastor Deanna picked up on our conversation with a beautiful devotion by

theologian Paul Tillich on listening as the first act of love. We celebrated her arrival with coffee and sweet

rolls before moving on to committee reports. While many of the committees are on summer break, several

reports indicate good activity. Financially we enter the summer with all apportionments paid in full and

encouraging numbers to get us through the summer. Worship, music, Christian education and missions are

making plans for the fall. The United Methodist Women will be leading worship on August 12, while Pastor

Deanna tends to her daughter after her surgery. Membership and Evangelism agreed to take the lead in

building a float for the White Elephant Parade. United Methodist Men will have their first breakfast Sept. 15.

As we concluded, Pastor Deanna expressed her appreciation to the congregation for the wonderful support as

she, Paul and Jordan arrive and especially for Jordan’s surgery August 7. She especially singled out the work

that the Trustees have done to get the parsonage and office ready, as well as the support of the retired pastors

and the Staff Parish Relations Committee. We look forward to our next meeting on Thursday, September 20

at 9:30 in Johnson Hall. All are welcome to attend. ~ Sincerely, Jerry Haas, chair

Choir Notes: Attention Choir members! First Choir

Practice for the Fall Season will be Friday, Sept 7,

2018 at 3:00 in the Choir Room. We hope to see you

there. A special invitation to anyone who likes to

sing. Come and join us in the Choir for the Worship

Service. We would love to have you. Talk to any

Choir member on Sunday, or just come to rehearsal

on any Friday at 3:00 in the Choir Room.

The 2018-2019 scholarship recipients have been chosen and awarded their appropriate scholarships, at the award's dinners, for the upcoming school year. Now it's up to the students to maintain good GPAs and follow the guidelines to keep their scholarships

renewable each year. If you attended the first Sunday in January 2018, you met many of the students the GVCC Foundation sponsors. They are truly inspiring and grateful for the financial support provided by members of the United Methodist Church of Green Valley. Since awards are only given from the interest earned on the principal, it is imperative that the Foundation continues to grow. That can only happen when individuals donate money,

property, insurance, memorials, etc. Please take a brochure from the pew holders and investigate how you can contribute or talk to any board member listed. No gift is too small.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve the United Methodist Church of Green Valley on United Methodist Women’s Sunday as the supply pastor! Many of you said you appreciated the opportunity to hear the message of hope about life after death. In addition, I was completely amazed by the number of folks who hurried by me in the greeting line saying they had in their personal history a near death experience! I say “hurried” because it is my understanding those who have this experience don’t always want to talk about it.

I believe it would be remiss of me not to offer to talk and/or meet with those “tunnelers” and “hurriers,” in case the message stirred something in you. In this age of HIPAA the only way the church office or staff can know if someone is in the hospital or having difficulties of any kind is through notification by you or a friend.

Please let us know if anyone in your family or the church family needs prayers and/or a visit. It is the practice of this church to prepare a prayer list, providing the names of the sick

for the purpose of Intercessory prayer.

A NEW OPPORTUNITY

John Wesley, the founder of the

Methodist Movement said that

“As Oft as the Lord’s Supper is

Offered, we should avail ourselves

of it.” The Lord’s Supper is a

means of God’s Grace where He

offers himself to us. Each Sunday

at 8:00 a.m. at the conclusion of

that service the Lord’s Supper is

offered. Also on the first Sunday

of the month at our other services,

the Lord’s Supper is offered.

Thanks to our Stephen

Ministers a new opportunity has

arisen to receive the Lord’s

Supper. At the conclusion of both

the 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. worship

hours a Stephen Minister will be

stationed in the Library to offer

the Lord’s Supper to anyone who

would like to receive it. This will

be offered on the Sundays where

the Lord’s Supper is not offered

during our regular worship hour.
