risk her health and possibly life-long injury just to win a

medal.

In the Le$er to the Hebrews, the author teaches us a

lesson as he describes a race or a compe!!on that you

and I are running or compe!ng in—a race that is even big-

ger and more important than the Olympics. The second

reading today says, "Since we are surrounded by so great

a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden

and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race

that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus"

(Heb 12:1-2). This passage in the le$er to the Hebrews

talks about the need to persevere in running the race —or

the determina!on to win the compe!!on—and how we

need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. In trying to live the

Chris!an life, we are called to stay focused on Jesus and

never give up despite our human weaknesses and strug-

gles.

When it comes to living the Chris!an life, it is easy to

give up when we focus on ourselves, our sins, our weak-

nesses, and things that surround us. Sports champions

always focus on the prize, the medal, or the trophy in-

stead of on their shortcomings, weaknesses, or circum-

stances. They persevere and are determined. So as Chris-

!ans, we, too, are called to persevere and to be deter-

mined and keep our focus on our prize, Jesus. We all have

shortcomings and weaknesses, yet we should never give

up. No ma$er how many !mes we fall, we just have to

keep our focus on Jesus so that we can get back up and

keep on going.

The way to help keep our focus on Jesus is prayer.

Every !me we live life worried or afraid, let us persevere

and determine to focus on Jesus through our prayer. Pray-

er doesn't necessarily makes our lives easier, but it helps

us focus on our prize, Jesus. It gives us the strength and

courage to con!nue our Chris!an journey toward God and

to be faithful to Jesus' call as his disciples.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time,

Year C,

August 18, 2019

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia,

Team USA's Women’s Gymnas!cs won its first gold

medal by narrowly edging out the Russian team by less

than a point. Team USA won in drama!c fashion, win-

ning the compe!!on on the last apparatus of the last

day of the women’s team compe!!on. On that day, Ker-

ri Strug became a na!onal hero. And it was not because

of her gymnas!c skills or because she was the best gym-

nast among her teammates. It was her extraordinary

determina!on that placed her into Olympic history.

Team USA's Women’s Gymnas!cs held a comforta-

ble lead heading into the vault, the last of the four appa-

ratuses. The only thing that the team needed to do was

perform adequately and it would win its first gold med-

al. Unfortunately, Kerri's teammates didn't perform very

well. One of her be$er teammates didn't s!ck the land-

ings and landed on her back on both of her vaults. Now

the pressure was on Kerri to perform adequately to

secure the win. However, just like her previous team-

mate, on Kerri's first vault, she failed to s!ck the landing

and fell on her back. Even worse, she landed awkwardly

and a loud crack came from her le" ankle. She hurt her

ankle severely and, all of a sudden, winning the gold

medal was no longer a sure thing. Had Kerri quit a"er

her first vault because of her injury, Team USA would

not have won the gold. Kerri had to do another vault,

and she needed to s!ck the landing to have any chance

of winning. Landing the vault was already a hard thing

for any gymnast to do. Now, with Kerri's injured le"

ankle, it seemed impossible. However, with sheer deter-

mina!on, Kerri shook off her pain and injury and execut-

ed her vault without error. As she stuck the landing, the

whole crowd in the stadium was roaring with cheers.

Though she stuck the landing, another crack could be

heard from her le" ankle. Kerri had severely hurt her

ankle this !me, but she was determined to pose just

long enough to get the judges' recogni!on before she

collapsed and had to be carried off by her coach. Thanks

to Kerri's heroic determina!on, she helped Team USA's

Women’s Gymnas!cs win its first gold medal in the

Olympics.

As we see, athletes like Kerri Strug worked long and

hard for the opportunity to represent their country and

to try to win a medal. Kerri kept her eye on the prize and

she was determined not to let anything stand in the way

of doing her very best. In Kerri's case, she was willing to
