If you picture a jigsaw puzzle in your mind, what do you see? Probably a complex pattern of interlocking pieces, rendering a beautiful picture or design.
That’s one good way to view the organizations that comprise the National Center for Care at the End of Life. All of them fit together, but each brings a different piece of the pattern to life.
• The National Hospice Foundation is the philanthropic engine at the National Center. This report focuses on the 2010 accomplishments of NHF—all made possible by donations from our varied and generous supporters.
• The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) is the leadership organization advancing hospice and palliative care. Members of NHPCO include 48,000 providers, professionals, and volunteers. NHPCO represents more than 75 percent of the nation’s hospice providers who are caring for the majority of hospice patients and families in the U.S.
• FHSSA, which began as the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa, works to build partnerships to promote compassionate care in Africa.
In late 2010, through our first reorganization in a decade, NHF and FHSSA are now housed in the Office of Philanthropy. This new office was created to increase effectiveness and efficiency through shared staffing and improved communication.
We are most grateful to everyone who supported us this year. You are an integral part of the puzzle and without you we would not be able to complete this beautiful picture of a world where individuals and families facing serious illness, death, and grief will experience the best that humankind can offer. Thank you.

In 2010, NHF board and staff began conversations with friends of NHF and NHPCO about the opportunity to create a permanent home for NHPCO and its family of organizations. These discussions formed the quiet beginnings of the Capital Campaign for the National Center for Care at the End of Life.
Although the campaign was not officially launched until 2011, significant milestones occurred in 2010:
• Campaign pledges and cash reached the 2010 goal of $500,000.
• Long-time hospice leader Mary Taverna took a leave of absence from the board and began work as the Campaign Associate.
• Naming opportunities throughout the building were created.
“ The value of the services and support
provided by staff at the national
headquarters is extraordinary. Having a
permanent home for the affiliates of
the National Center for Care at the End
of Life will mean an enormous amount
to those of us who have dedicated our
careers to helping people get the care
and support that is the best, as we say,
that humankind can offer.”
— Mary Labyak, Campaign Chair, President and CEO of Suncoast Hospice (Clearwater, Florida), and Chair of NHF’s Board of Trustees

On the evening of April 23, 2010, almost 600 hospice supporters gathered at the Omni Shoreham hotel in Washington, DC to pay tribute to NHF’s founders and to celebrate hospice today. Generous sponsors and guests donated more than half a million dollars through the event.
At the event, the Steven P.J. Wood Founding Philanthropists were named and recognized.

The evening’s gracious master of ceremonies was Mort Kondracke, a political commentator and journalist.
NHF bestowed the Healthcare Architect Award on The Honorable Edward M. Kennedy. The late Senator was tirelessly devoted to healthcare and was an early advocate for hospice.
Elizabeth Ross spoke on behalf of all the founding philanthropists. Her remarks included, in part, “NHF has certainly grown since my days as a trustee. And with that growth comes an incredible responsibility. I have faith that you will continue what we started and cultivate a future committed to compassionate end-of-life care. Thank you for being successful stewards of our gifts.”

For people who are deeply grateful for the hospice care their family or friends received, Run to Remember is the perfect way to give back. Participants run or walk a race (of any length, at any pace), in memory of a loved one. They also use their athletic endeavor as a reason to ask for donations. The funds are split between NHF and local hospice programs selected by the runners/walkers.
The program grows every year. In 2010, Run to Remember raised $157,568, which was $50,000+ more than 2009 revenue. This year, 164 people trained hard and raised money. This is double the number of participants in 2009.
Innovations in 2010 included:
• Launching a completely redesigned website (www.runtoremember.org) with a great deal of new content, including fundraising tools for individuals as well as hospices.
• Obtaining charity slots for the New York City Marathon.
• Being selected as an official charity of the Bourbon Chase overnight relay in Kentucky.
• Connecting with elite athlete Jim Smith who was our 2010 top fundraiser and participated the Badwater Ultramarathon (135 miles through the desert in July).
Thank You to the 2010 Run to Remember® Alumni
These individuals pushed themselves physically to train and compete in their events, while also challenging themselves to raise money from family and friends. We are deeply grateful for their extraordinary efforts.

NHF’s generous donors give beyond the borders of the U.S. Through the FHSSA Impact Fund, individuals support FHSSA’s work in building partnerships to enhance compassionate care in Africa.
In addition, the NHF team supported FHSSA in these key ways in 2010:
• Garnering $220,000 in corporate contributions to fund a joint FHSSA-African Palliative Care Association project to improve pain management in The Gambia, Kenya, and Malawi.
• Raising a total of $47,920 at “From Atlanta to Africa”, the fundraising event held in conjunction with NHPCO’s Clinical Team Conference on September 14, 2010.
• Redesigning and launching the new FHSSA website (www.fhssa.org).
At the “From Atlanta to Africa” event, performers from The Drum Café led participants, some of whom are shown here, in an energizing drum circle, which created amazing energy that swept through the room and continued into the reception.

Memorial Donations from Evercare Hospice & Palliative Care
Through NHF’s partnership with Evercare Hospice & Palliative Care, NHF received nearly $40,000 in memorial donations.
We are so grateful for Evercare Hospice & Palliative Care for paving the way by example for other for-profit hospices to join NHF in similar arrangements. This year, we welcomed Auburn Crest Hospice in Idaho and another hospice that wishes to remain anonymous into similar agreements to contribute their memorial donations to NHF.
Gratitude for Giving
On April 21, 2010 several hundred NHF supporters and friends gathered in Washington, DC to honor individual and corporate donors who have made extraordinary commitments to the work of NHF. This
“Gratitude for Giving” event was held during the week of NHPCO’s Management and Leadership Conference.
Among those feted were members of The Legacy Society, who have named NHF as a beneficiary of their will or other charitable planned giving instrument. In 2010, NHF received three bequest gifts totaling $729,011. The largest was a trust for $704,011 left to NHF by Gladys “Boots” and Robert Crane. Eight new members joined The Legacy Society, for a grand total of 38 members by year’s end.
Other Key Achievements
Guests at Graditude for Giving enjoy the performance of the Capital Steps, a satiric political troupe.

The human impulse to give and the human need to bring comfort to the suffering are what fuel NHF’s ability to make a positive impact on end-of-life care.
NHF exists for one reason. To help people — and organizations — channel their charitable donations to make a real difference in hospice and palliative care. NHF supports projects that are crucial to NHPCO’s mission, but which require additional funding beyond membership dues and educational programming revenue.
While NHPCO and NHF do not provide care at the bedside, we work together with our members and others to raise the bar for performance across the nation.
Here is just a brief sampling of what we were able to support in 2010, with the help of NHF’s generous donors:
• Shared best practices, program models, and innovations to enrich the professional practice of hospice teams.
• Added 50 new courses for End-of-Life Online web-based education — which dramatically increases the reach of professional education to people who cannot travel to conferences.
• Provided outreach and support to national and local media, including such outlets as CNN, ABC News, CBS News, 60 Minutes, Washington Post, New York Times, and many more—always with the goal of telling the story of hospice.
• Gathered data from more than 600 hospices as part of a nine-month data collection and assessment project to test possible models for hospice payment reform—to make sure hospices are compensated fairly for their services by Medicare.
NHF’s Donors Make a Tremendous Difference to People at the End of Life
2 0 1 0 N H F A N N U A L R E P O R T | 9
• Released the 2010 edition of the important Standards of Practice for Hospice Programs—reflecting the most current federal regulations since 2006 and more practice examples to help providers implement them.
• Provided comprehensive regulatory and compliance updates and tips—helping hospice providers better understand the federal regulations that govern hospice care.
NHF’s initial mission, when founded in 1992, was to increase public awareness about hospice. That work continues with the Caring Connections consumer program, supported by donations to NHF.
In 2010,
• The Caring Connections website (www.caringinfo.org) received more than 10 million hits with more than 75,000 brochures downloaded.
• HelpLine staff fielded an average of 1,200 calls per month from individuals seeking resources or contact information for a local hospice.

Please note: We strive for accuracy within our annual listing of donors. If you find your information to be incorrect or if you prefer your name to be listed differently in the future, please contact us toll free at 877-470-6472, locally at 703-516-4928, or email [email protected] so we can make appropriate changes in our database.
Every gift makes a difference to compassionate care at the end of life. NHF appreciates all of the donors who contributed in 2010. Due to space constraints, only those whose cumulative giving totaled $100 or more are listed here.
Thank you to the many 2010 donors who chose to contribute to NHF through giving options such as Just Give, Global Impact, CHC, CFC, The Active Network, and TisBest.
2010 NHF President’s Society / FHSSA Global Ambassadors
With gratitude, we recognize and celebrate our donors and friends who have made gifts (not pledges) of $1,000 and above in support of The National Center’s various programs between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010.
