Keywords describing what things represent (page 94)

Depict and portray = represent something in a picture, film, story, etc.

You can depict / portray a character, a place or an event:

- The film depicted / portrayed Elizabeth II.

- The film depicted / portrayed life in the 19th century.

- The film depicted / portrayed a small town in Russia.

After depict and portray we can use as:

- She was depicted as an evil character.

You convey information, ideas, feelings etc. (=communicate).

- The film conveys a powerful sense of optimism.

It’s no good / use are followed by –ing.

- It’s no use crying over spilt milk.

It’s no coincidence / secret / wonder / surprise are followed by that.

- It’s no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction.

It’s no trouble / problem / big deal are followed by to + infinitive (or by –ing).

- It's no trouble to bring a laptop.

- Fortunately, I have a store fairly nearby, so it’s no trouble returning or

exchanging things.

It’s no different is followed by from.

- The airports are all the same. It’s no different from being home.

Signalling attitude:

1. = it’s understood: naturally, of course, obviously

2. = positive comment: fortunately, luckily, I’m glad to say

3. = negative comment: unfortunately, sadly, I’m sorry to say

4. = expressing surprise: surprisingly, astonishingly, incredibly, amazingly, oddly,

strangely (enough)

5. = expressing time or duration: suddenly, gradually, eventually, in the end

6. = expressing contrast: however, nevertheless, all the same

Softening:

Maybe, presumably, I think, probably, perhaps, sort of, possibly, in a way, to some extent

Adding emphasis:

Really, definitely, actually, indeed, clearly, in fact, certainly, literally, as a matter of fact.
