1.2 A GENERAL INTRODUCTION ON KARAKA-VIBHAKTI

The Nomenclature :

Sanskrit grammar acknowledges the doctrine of sphota and

therefore accepts the potentiality of expressing the sense in words

and sentences. So to establish the correctness of a sentence,

Siddhantakaumudi takes up the treatment of karaka and vibhakti in

its Karakaprakaranam after dealing with necessary topics like

sandhi, supkarya, lingakarya etc. Vibhaktyarthaprakarana,

Subarthaprakarana or Karakadivibhaktyarthaprakarana are other

names of this topic. The question of inclusion of tin in

Vibhaktyarthaprakarana can be eradicated by the aphorisms like

³eg<ceÐegHeHeos meceeveeefOekeÀjCes mLeeefvev³eefHe ceO³ece: (Hee. 1.4.105), DevegoeÊeef*le DeelcevesHeoced (Hee.1.3.12), and

J³eglHeÊes: on DeJ³e³eb efJeYeefÊeÀ...(Hee., 2.1.6) as DevJeLe&meb%ee~The presence of

sambandhasasthi in Karakaprakarana can be resolved by the

maxim- yeengu³esve J³eHeosMee YeJeefvle as seen in veiejb iele: to convey that most of the

citizens have left. The name Subarthaprakarana is appropriate which

is chosen by Kaundabhatta in his Vaiyakaranabhusanasara.

Karaka and its Nature :

The word ‘karaka’ occurs first in Panini and literally means the doer

or the agent. Since the word ‘karta’ is used in this sense, the sense

of karaka is generalized to mean ‘case’. Thus in the sentence osJeoÊe:

He®eefle, Devadatta is the agent since he places the pot on the stove,

pours water into it, puts rice into it and so on. When we say mLeeueer He®eefle

or SOe: He®eefle, the locative or the instrumental are used as agent in the

sense that the rice is getting quickly cooked by the thinness of the

pot resulting in being hot soon and the fuel is able to go on burning

till the rice is softened.

Karaka is used in the technical sense of ‘instrument of action’.

Hee., 2.4.23~ Karaka, in short, is the capacity in which a thing becomes

instrumental in bringing about an action. This capacity is looked

upon as the sense of the case-affixes called as vibhaktis. In

Karakaprakarana, rules regulating all the seven traids of vibhaktis

and the rules defining six karakas technically termed as Karta,

Karma, Karana, Sampradana, Apadana and Adhikarana are dealt

with. Thus the chapter governs the cases and case-affixes which

indicate different meanings. Karaka is the relation between a noun

and a verb in a sentence.This meaning is derived from the

etymology of karaka which is explained in two ways. ef$eÀ³eeb keÀjesleerefle

ef$eÀ³ee³eecevJesleerefle Jee keÀejkeÀced. That which performs or is related to a

performance is called ‘karaka’- ke=À + CJegued (DekeÀ)~ As long as there is no

performer of the performance, the activity cannot begin despite the

existence of other instruments. The action of all other instruments

are controlled by the agent i.e. karta. Karta is independent and it

never indulges in activity by being induced by other karakas. On the

other hand it is the inducer of other karakas though it depends on

them for the fulfillment of the primary action intended.

The instruments of the activity other than the agent are broadly

called as karakas only for their co-operation i.e. GHe-keÀejkeÀlee~ They are

six in number and assume names as Karma etc. due to their

remarkably intra-different auxiliary participation in the fulfillment

of the main action. MeyoeLe&³eesjYesoesHe®eeje®íyoeveeb keÀejkeÀlJeced~ Thus the words

denoting the properties of being the agent, the object, the instrument,

the locus and the like of the verbal activity are themselves called by

the names of the agent etc. The relation between the meanings of

two nominal stems is not a karaka. In the sentences- osJeoÊe: Oece&m³e ue#eCeb

ÞegCeesefle or ye´eïeCem³e Heg$eb HevLeeveb He=®íefle, the act of listening and asking have no

relation with dharma and brahmana respectively and therefore

dharma and brahmana are not karakas. Sasthi applied to both is not

karakavibhakti as both of them do not invariably contribute to the

fruit/function of two respective activities like ÞeJeCeef$eÀ³ee and ÒeMveef$eÀ³ee~

To spell out the meaning of karta etc., a sup termination is added to

a pratipadika. These sups are called as karakavibhaktis.

The Role of Verb :

A speaker never wants to carry individual word-ideas; what he

wants to carry is a composite notion conveyed by means of variety

of expressions. Thus the expressions –De$eem³eleeced, Foceemeveceem³eleeced,

Foceemeveceuebef$eÀ³eleeced, De$eemeervees YeJe, De$eemJe and the like carry one idea of sitting

on the seat shown. The unit of expression is always a sentence that

accommodates a verbal activity accomplished by its auxiliary units

or karaka. Katyayana has given two definitions of a sentence. 1)

DeeK³eeleb meeJ³e³ekeÀejkeÀefJeMes<eCeb Jeeke̳eced and 2) SkeÀefle*d Jeeke̳eced~ According to these it

is understood that a verb is a sentence which is capable of

expressing a meaning with or without a case or an indeclinable or an

adjective. Three things are important in the design of a sentence.

They are cases, the inter-relationship of words and the order of

words. Mutual agreement is the foundation of these three

dimensions.

keÀ:, keÀced, kesÀve, keÀmcew, keÀmceeled, kegÀ$e are resolved by their corresponding

karakas which are in agreement with the activity called oeveef$eÀ³ee~

Grammarians assign two roles to a root i.e. fruit and activity or

function. HeÀueJ³eeHeej³eesOee&leg: - Jew.Yet.mee. 1/2~ In the verbal form ie®íefle the root

ieced = meb³eesieevegketÀueJ³eeHeej: implies both GÊejosMemeb³eesie: as the fruit and the

necessary activity involved for its accomplishment. The termination

efle*d in ie®íefle signifies the nominative case, present tense and singular

number. This application, vividly treated under the governing rule

‘anabhihite’ along with other two types of applications in Siddhanta

Kaumudi, is called as ‘kartari prayoga’.

Origin and Scope of Vibhakti :

The case-affix of a particular word in a sentence is determined by its

position i.e. the relation with the verb or its association with another

word. The former is karakavibhakti and the latter is

upapadavibhakti. There are again some indeclinables including

pradis called as karmapravacaniyas and they govern

upapadavibhaktis. The word vibhakti is derived from ‘vi+bhaj’ (to

divide, distribute) and means separation, modification etc.

According to Nyasa (1.2.44), efJeYeefÊeÀMeyo: megHeeb Jee®ekeÀ:~ efJeYeeieJe®evees Jee~

efJeYep³eles ÒeeefleHeefokeÀeLeexçve³esefle ke=ÀlJee~ According to Kasika on Panini (2.3.32),

the names of seven case-endings beginning from prathama to

saptami have been taken over from ancient preceptors. It goes back

to an ancient custom called as HegvejeOeeve or repeated employment of

three sacrificial fires in which six stanzas having different forms of

the name of the deity are chosen for the offering of the oblation.

Rgveda uses Deive Dee³eeefn Jeerle³es~ $eÝ-6.16.10 (Oh Agni, come for the treat),

Deeqive otleb Je=Ceercens~ $eÝ-1.12.1 (We choose Agni as our messenger), Deeqiveveeeqive:

meefceO³eles~ $eÝ-1.12.6 (Agni is kindled with Agni), DeeqiveJe=&$eeefCe pe«veled~ $eÝ-

6.16.34 (May Agni smite the enemies), Deives: mleesceb ceveecens~ $eÝ-5.13.2 (We

meditate the praise of Agni), Deivee ³ees ceʳeex ogJe:~ $eÝ-6.14.1 (In Agni that

mortal shelters). The first word in each of the above verses is known

as vibhakti. Sayana also speaks of the same in his bhasya on Tandya

Natyasastra explains the significance of vibhaktis thus:

Since they discriminate the meaning of one or many words, dhatus

and pratipadikas; they are known as vibhaktis. The mere sense of a

pratipadika or substantitive is the condition of prathamavibhakti or

the nominative case-affixes.

Nagesa in his Sabdendusekhara says in the context of the

sutra‘ÒeeefleHeefokeÀeLe&...’that FoceefHe met$eb ef$eÀ³ee³eesie SJe ÒeJeÊe&les, Devlele: Deefmleef$eÀ³ee³ee: meJe&$e

meÊJeeled and establishes the application of prathama as karakavibhakti

in it. Similarly the vibhakti applied by ‘mecyeesOeves ®e’ is not

karakavibhakti. mecyeesOeve has always been subjected to repetition but

never to prescription. The listener addressed in vocative is

immediately understood as qualified by some kind of qualification

and then he is informed about something. In the structure – ‘ns jepeved,

efJepe³eer YeJe’, jepeved is derived from jepeved+meg (mecyeesOeves ÒeLecee)~ It is understood

that a certain man is a king and his victory is prescribed here. So the

keÀÊe=&Heo i.e. lJeb is T¿e or inferable in it since the meÊee, the meaning of the

root Yet, rests with the agency lying in ³eg<celed for its production.

Owned – owner relation and other similar relations are also the

conditions of <eÿer efJeYeefÊeÀ~ efÜleer³ee-le=leer³ee-®elegLeea-Heáeceer-meHleceer play the role of

both karakavibhakti and upapadavibhakti. <eÿer that is applied to

nominative and accusative due to ke=ÀÐeesie is also karakavibhakti. le=leer³ee

is also conditionally applied to nominative and instrumental.

keÀce&ÒeJe®eveer³e is a kind of technical term. It is also a cause of the

application of efÜleer³ee as in Je=#eb Òeefle efJeÐeesleles efJeÐegled ,Heáeceer as in Dee efnceeue³eeled and

meHleceer as in DeefOe YegefJe jece:~

Sometimes some special names are given to some specifications like

DeHeJeiex le=leer³ee, GHeue#eCeeLex le=leer³ee, meefle meHleceer, efve×e&jCes <eÿer, Del³evlemeb³eesies efÜleer³ee and

mecyeg×ew ÒeLecee etc. The vibhakti applied in these cases may be called Mes<eeLe&efJeYeefÊeÀ:~

Conclusion :

The causes or nimittas of the application of sup- vibhakti may be

grouped under following heads. They are keÀejkeÀ, GHeHeo, ÒeeefleHeefokeÀeLe&,

above are placed in a table drawn below.

These 21common case-affixes are called as sup-vibhakti. When a

suffix belonging to sup-vibhakti is added to a pratipadika, the

pratyayanta pratipadika is called as subanta-pada. For example : jece

+ Deew = jeceew~ Panini has instructed 21 affixes / morphemes in general to

decline any word corresponding to its desired sense but in the course

of declension a variety of sub-affixes are introduced to different

pratipadikas to arrive at the laksyas or the derived words in use. For

example, Panini instructs the operation of only *s as a common affix

to signify fourth case singular number vide the rule mJeewpemeceewìdõ-

(4.1.2). In use, though the same meaning i.e. fourth case singular

number is intended, the resultant words display dissimilarity in form

as in jecee³e, meJe&mcew, %eeefveves, peieles, Jee®es, uelee³ew, keÀJe³es, YeeveJes, legY³eced etc. So the question

regarding the settlement of the appearance of sub-affixes or

allomorphemes like -³e/,-mcew/ -Ss/, -³ew/, -S/,-Deced/ etc. arises. The question

is settled by the principle of mLeev³eeosMeYeeJe~ Let us go through the process

of formation of jecee³e and meJe&mcew below.

Grammarians discuss two types of doctrines prevalent in Sanskrit

grammar regarding the theory of karaka. Some argue in favour of

the potentiality itself as karaka and some others in favour of the

words possessed of potentiality as karaka. However, the latter is

widely acknowledged.

1.3. BACKGROUND OF THE UNIT

The ablative case is used as a karaka-vibhakti in the sense of DeHeeoeve

i.e. a thing which remains stable when a thing connected with it gets

separated from it. For example, we can consider the expression Je=#eeled

HeCCe¥ Heleefle in which the word Je=#e or the tree is DeHeeoeve. This case is also

used as karaka-vibhakti after words denoting cause of fear, a thing

abhorred, a thing coveted, a person from whom one fees shy, a thing

from which something originated when such words are associated

with appropriate verbal activity. The ablative is also used in the case

of words associated with a gerund form as its object when the

gerund is omitted as in Òeemeeoeled Òes#eles ~ HeáeceerefJeOeeves u³eyueesHes keÀce&C³egHemebK³eeveced~ -

Mahabhasya on Astadhyayi 2.3.28. Ablative case affix is placed

after the words mleeskeÀ, DeefvlekeÀ, ke=À®í^ and words showing distance when

they are associated with past participles. The ablative is also added

to a noun which is associated with another noun ending in an affix

of the comparative degree such as lej, F&³emed and the like. In last two

situations the ablative case is called GHeHeoefJeYeefÊeÀ.

In this block, the structure of the explanation of a sutra followed by

the vrtti of Bhattoji comprises of the steps like

sandhichheda,vibhakti, samasa, anuvrtti, sutrartha, sutravyakhya,

udaharana-samanvaya, pratyudaharana - samanvaya and
