3.1. Analyse how individual speakers and writers choose varieties, registers and styles according to personal, social, political and cultural factors
3.2. Analyse how language is used in the formation, maintenance and transformation of power relations
3.3. Explain the role of existing literacy and language practices on literacy learners’ literacy and language development

ASSESSMENT INFORMATION Specific Requirements for Assessment and delivery of this unit. ASSESSMENT AND DELIVERY INFORMATION Centre devised assessment tasks should be approved by the internal or external verifier for the course before delivery takes place in order to ensure the assessment is fit for purpose and meets the standards required. Unit Summary This unit requires the candidate to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in the field of literacy. They will explore the factors affecting language and literacy acquisition and demonstrate their ability to analyse some of the theories and principles underlying literacy learning and development. Indicative Content Delivery Requirements/Recommendations Dynamics and evolution of language e.g. development of different varieties of English, attitudes to different varieties of English and relation to standard English, variety of language forms, range of language function. Current theories of literacy learning and development e.g. memory and cognitive processing in language learning Theories and principles of language acquisition and bilingualism. Factors affecting language acquisition e.g. background, prior personal and educational experience, goals and aspirations, age, commitment and expectations. Social, cognitive and affective factors influencing literacy acquisition and development e.g. specific disabilities and learning difficulties that restrict language acquisition and development. Means by which language can be described and analysed.
