Unit Aims & Learning Outcomes

Aims of the Unit

This unit builds on unit R081 and learners will be able to apply the skills, knowledge and

understanding gained in that unit and vice versa.

Digital graphics feature in many areas of our lives and play a very important part in today’s world.

The digital media sector relies heavily on these visual stimulants within the products it produces, to

communicate messages effectively.

The aim of this unit is for learners to understand the basics of digital graphics editing for the

creative and digital media sector. They will learn where and why digital graphics are used and what

techniques are involved in their creation. This unit will develop learners’ understanding of the client

brief, time frames, deadlines and preparation techniques as part of the planning and creation

process.

On completion of this unit, learners will understand the purpose and properties of digital graphics,

and know where and how they are used. They will be able to plan the creation of digital graphics,

create new digital graphics using a range of editing techniques and review a completed graphic

against a specific brief.

LO1: Understand the purpose and properties of digital graphics

Learners must be taught:

Why digital graphics are used (e.g. to entertain, to inform, to advertise, to promote, to

educate)

How digital graphics are used (e.g. magazine covers, CD/DVD covers, adverts, web images

and graphics, multimedia products, games)

Types of digital graphics, i.e.

o Bitmap/raster

o Vector

File formats, i.e.

o .tiff

o .jpg

o .png

o .bmp

o .gif

o .pdf

The properties of digital graphics and their suitability for use in creating images, i.e.

o pixel dimensions

o dpi resolution

o quality

o compression settings

How different purposes and audiences influence the design and layout of digital graphics

(e.g. the use of colour, composition, white space and styles).

4 Unit R082: Creating Digital Graphics

LO2: Be able to plan the creation of a digital graphic

Learners must be taught how to:

Interpret client requirements for a digital graphic based on a specific brief (e.g. by client

discussion, reviewing a written brief, or specification)

Understand target audience requirements for a digital graphic

Produce a work plan for an original graphics creation; to include:

o tasks

o activities

o workflow

o timescales

o resources

o milestones

o contingencies

Produce a visualisation diagram for a digital graphic

Identify the assets needed to create a digital graphic (e.g. photographs, scanned images,

library images, graphics, logos)

Identify the resources needed to create a digital graphic (e.g. digital camera, internet,

scanner, computer system and software)

Learners must be taught:

How legislation (e.g. copyright, trademarks, logos, intellectual property use, permissions and

implications of use) applies to images used in digital graphics, whether sourced or created.

LO3: Be able to create a digital graphic

Learners must be taught how to:

Source assets identified for use in a digital graphic, i.e.

o images

o graphics

Create assets identified for use in a digital graphic, i.e.

o images

o graphics

Ensure the technical compatibility of assets with the final graphic (e.g. pixel dimensions, dpi

resolution)

Create a digital graphic using a range of tools and techniques within the image editing

software application (e.g. cropping, rotating, brightness, contrast, colour adjustment)

Save a digital graphic in a format appropriate to the software being used

Export the digital graphic using appropriate formats and properties for:

o print use

o web use

o multimedia use

Learners must be taught:

How to use version control when creating a digital graphic

Scenario for the Assignment

Lonsdale International Film Festival

The Lonsdale International Film Festival is to be held in the North West of England for the first

time. The festival will take place over three days and will be held at the Westmorland County

Showground. It is a family festival that will showcase films up to certificate 12, from all over the

world, in an open-air cinema that is set up for the event.

You have been asked to create a digital graphic that will be used to promote the international film

festival. A high quality file will be needed for use as an A3 poster to be displayed in the local area,

together with a low resolution version suitable for use on a website as an advertisement of 500

pixels in width.

Read through all of the tasks carefully, so that you know what you will need to do to complete this assignment.

Important • You will need to have access to the marking criteria. Your teacher can explain the marking

criteria if you need further clarification. • You will need to draw upon relevant skills/knowledge/understanding from other units you

have studied in this qualification. • The final product must be supplied as evidence in its intended format.

Your Tasks

The tasks should take approximately 10 hours to complete.

Task 1: Investigating Digital Graphics

Learning Outcome (LO) 1 is assessed in this task Before creating your digital graphic, you need to investigate the purpose and properties of digital graphics.

The purpose of digital graphics

You need to: • investigate how and why digital graphics are used in a range of sectors • identify the purpose of digital graphics.

Identifying the properties of digital graphics

You need to consider: • the properties of digital graphics which could affect their compatibility with the intended

purpose • file formats for different types and uses of digital graphics.

Investigate the design and layout of digital graphics

You need to: • investigate how different purposes and audiences influence the design and layout of digital

graphics. Present your evidence in an appropriate way.

Task 2: Planning your digital graphic

Learning Outcome (LO) 2 is assessed in this task. You need to organise your time and resources so that you can plan the creation of your digital graphic. You will need to generate the ideas for the digital graphic, taking into consideration any external restrictions on what you can use or produce.

Your client and the target audience

You need to: • consider the client’s and how these are specified • consider the target audience for the digital graphic • decide on a visual style and composition of the digital graphic.

Creating a work plan for the project

You need to: • identify what activities must be completed to create the digital graphic • estimate how long each activity will take • identify the workflow sequence, needed to create the digital graphic • describe the assets and resources you will need to create the digital graphic.

Producing ideas

You need to: • produce a visualisation diagram of the digital graphic.

Legal restrictions

You need to: • explain any legal issues and restrictions that need to be considered when creating the digital

graphic to be used in a commercial context. Present your evidence in an appropriate way.

Task 3: Creating your digital graphic

Learning Outcome (LO) 3 is assessed in this task. You will need to produce the digital graphic, using a range of tools, techniques and assets to ensure it is suitable for its intended uses.

Obtaining assets for use in the graphic

You need to: • obtain the assets required for the digital graphic • re-purpose the assets to ensure their technical compatibility with the digital graphic.

Create the graphic

You need to: • use a range of tools and techniques from the image editing software to combine the assets

into the final graphic • save both versions of the digital graphic in suitable formats as specified in the brief • submit both digital graphic versions in an electronic format. Present your evidence in an appropriate way.

10 Unit R082: Creating Digital Graphics

Task 4: Checking and reviewing the digital graphic

Learning Outcome (LO) 4 is assessed in this task. Now the digital graphic has been produced, you need to consider whether you have met all the requirements of the initial brief. You will also need to review the overall quality of the digital graphic and identify any improvements that could be made.

Reviewing the digital graphic

You need to: • review how well the digital graphic meets the clients requirements • identify how the digital graphic could be improved • describe areas for further development, giving reasons for your choices. Present your evidence in an appropriate way.
