At tendance RequirementsEvery student enrolled in MAT1163 is expected to attend the lectures and onetutorial session

per week. Those students who are not yet enrolled in a tutorial session are requested to do so

by the end of week 1.

    Class Sessions

There are three hours of lectures and one hour of tutorials each week.

    Campus Session Time Room

    Joondalup Lecture Tuesday JO 7.102

    Joondalup Lecture Friday JO 7.102

    Joondalup Tutorial Tuesday JO 4.236/237

AssessmentThe assessment is composed of two assignments and a final examination.

The assignments contribute 40% to the total mark. The first assignment will cover the

weekly problems from weeks 1 to 5 inclusive and it is due for submission on Friday 3

September, 14.30. The second assignmentwill cover problems from weeks 6 to 10 and it is

due for submission on Friday 29 October, 14.30.

The first assignment will be available from the unit website on Tuesday 3 August and the

second assignment will be available on Tuesday 7 September.

You are encouraged to start work on the assignments early and time will be made available in

the tutorials to work on them or ask questions about them.

The final examinationwill take place during the examination fortnight and will cover the

entire content. It contributes 60% to the total mark and will include a multiple choice

    component.

Material to help you learnIn addition to the weekly tutorial sheets, there are quizzes for you to check mastery of the

concepts and short multiple choice tests for you to check your computational work. You can

attempt these as often as you wish, as they do not contribute to your mark

WebsiteCopies of lecture presentations, recordings and solutions to the weekly worksheets will be

available on the Blackboard unit website. The URL is

    http://myecu.ecu.edu.au

and you login using your ECU student login details. To get to the materials for MAT1163,

click on the tab named as MyECU Sitesand then select MAT1163.2010.2.OnCampus from

    My Units. You will find

Copies of this document, the unit outline, a sheet detailing terminology if you click on

Copies of the weekly lecture materials are contained in the Unit Schedule. Please

print a copy to bring along to the lectures, so that you can annotate them.

The assignments and copies of old exams will be released at various times of the

semester and you will find them in the area titled Assessments. This site also contains

links to quizzes and revision problems.

CalculatorsThe use of a graphics calculator relieves the computational burden in linear algebra and so it

is desirable for you to have access to a graphics calculator while learning the material.

The capabilities the calculator should have are as follows:

Determination of the reduced row echelon form of a matrix, either step by step or in a

    single step

    Solution of systems of equations

    Vector arithmetic

    Matrix arithmetic

Determination of eigenvalues and eigenvectors: this is desirable, but not essential

However, giving just a calculator-derived answer will not give you full marks for the

question. In mathematics, it is the ability to formulate the problem, then identify what

technique to use to solve it and lastly solve the problem and interpret the results appropriately

    that counts.

In accordance with the School of Engineering policy on calculators in exams, in the final

exam only a scientific calculator is allowed. Problems will be set in such a way that you can

demonstrate your mastery of the concepts without access to a graphics calculator.

    PLAGIARISM

The University regards plagiarism (the unacknowledged reproduction of the work of others)

as a serious offence and has recently adopted a formal policy setting out the processes to be

followed and (quite severe) penalties to be imposed in cases of detected plagiarism. The

detailed policy is available on the University's website.
