BIO 201 Pre/Post Test Assessment

BIO 201

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Pre/Post Test Questions The student will demonstrate an understanding of select systems of the human body by:

1. Classifying tissue histologically and functionally. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

2. Distinguishing between layers of the integumentary system. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

3. Identifying the bones, markings, structure of bone, and joint types associated with 15, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 the skeletal system.

4. Identifying the functions and the homeostasis of the skeletal system 13, 14, 16, 17, 18

5. Explaining the structure and functions of the muscular system. 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33

6. Comprehending the structure of the nervous system by identifying 34, 35, 36, 40, 42, 44 major parts of the human brain, neuron, and specialized receptors.

7. Relating the functions of the nervous system. 1, 37, 38, 39, 41, 43,

8. Relating the functions of the special senses to the identification of sensations. 45, 46, 17, 18, 49, 50

Each spring and fall semester, a pre-test is administered to all BIO 201 students present on the first day of class and an identical

post-test is administered to those same students present on the last day of class. This is done as a means to assess student understanding

and comprehension of biological concepts. Following the pre/post-test assessment below, there is a plan (p. 18) to address those areas

where less than 50% of students scored accurately on a concept. Faculty will discuss the results and areas of weakness and will develop

additional or alternative teaching strategies.

Question 18: I think by drawing students attention to the word “water” by underlining in the test question will increase the accuracy. Question 19: make sure that instructors use the words, hypotonic and hyposmotic, interchangeably. Furthermore, instructors can make sure to review/discuss the portion of lab 4 that covers this (potato in distilled water and salt water). Question 32: make sure completely covered in lecture and in lab 8. Underline the word “cytoplasm” to draw their attention and increase accuracy. **Because of student apathy toward the post test, all instructors will now include the post test score as part of the student’s final course grade.
