CONDITIONALS

Conditional sentences in English are used to talk about events and their results.

Conditionals - IF Clauses Conditional sentences have two parts: the if-clause and the main clause.

• There are four types of conditional sentences. • It’s important to use the correct structure for each of these different conditional sentences

because they express varying meanings. • Pay attention to verb tense when using different conditional modes.

• Use a comma after the if-clause when the if-clause precedes the main clause.

Zero Conditional The zero conditional is the factual conditional. It is used to talk about habits, scientific facts, general truths, instructions and rules, if something else happens first. If this event happens or if this condition exists, this is what happens.

There are two parts in a conditional sentence.

If clause – main clause or result clause

contains the condition contains the result (the event or situation that must happen first)

This is the easiest conditional sentence remember, because you use the present simple tense in both clauses of the sentence:

STRUCTURE:

If + present simple, present simple

Present Simple + If + Present Simple

If + Present Simple, Present Simple

Present Simple + If + Present Simple

• If you put water in the freezer, it becomes ice. • If you stand in the rain, you get wet.

• If you heat ice, it melts.

• You get wet if you stand in the rain. • Ice melts if you heat it. • I can't sleep if I drink coffee at night. • Plants die if you don't water them.

You can see in the examples about the the condition always has the same result.

Notice how the comma is not necessary with this word order

Notice how we use a comma after the first present simple tense clause.

CENTRODEBACHILLERATOTECNOLÓGICOindustrialydeserviciosN°108ENGLISHIII Zero Conditional Uses

1. Rules • If you take your cell phone into class, it must be turned off. • If you drink alcohol, don’t drive.

2. Scientific Facts • If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils. • If you drop something, it falls. • When you combine oil and water, they do not mix.

3. General thuths and facts.

These things are not scientific facts, but they are things that are true, or that we generally believe are true.

• If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils. • If you drop something, it falls. • Ice melts if you heat it.

4. Cause and Effect

• If you push the button, the volume increases. • If you close the door, it locks automatically.

5. Habits and daily routines.

Use the zero conditional sentence structure to talk about your habits, or things that you always do in certain situations or conditions. Remember: You are thinking about your habits, not a specific situation that is happening today or that will possibly happen tomorrow.

• I wear my boots when I work. • She uses glasses when she drives. • If I get sick, I take an aspirin. • If it’s cold, I stay home and watch Netflix.

(I am talking about my general habits.) Negatives use do not, does not, am not, is not, or are not, just like the simple present.

• If you do not exercise, you gain weight. • If you exercise, you do not gain weight. • If I don’t study, I don’t do well on tests. • If you are not on time, you lose one mark.

MTRA.ITZYSEPULVEDAANDDR.MARCOSDOMÍNGUEZ -48-

CENTRODEBACHILLERATOTECNOLÓGICOindustrialydeserviciosN°108 ENGLISHIII

Questions Form questions just like you do in the simple present, by reversing the order.

• Does ice melt if you heat it? • When do you wake up if you have to work? • If you have to work, when do you wake up?

NOTES:

a. You can change the order of the clauses.

• If this event or condition happens, this is what I do. • This is what I do if this event or condition happens.

Did you notice that there is no comma between the clauses when they are in this order? comma: If this event or condition happens, this is what I do. no comma: This is what I do if this event or condition happens.

b. You can use when instead of if.

In the real factual conditional, when and if have a similar meaning.

• When I get lost, I ask for directions. • I stay home from work when I get sick. • When I’m in my car, I listen to the radio. • Whenever I cook fish, the house smells. • I smoke when I drink. • When I go to the movies, I eat a bag of popcorn. • I listen to my ipod when I jog.

c. You can use adverbs of frequency.

You can use adverbs of frequency to talk about your habits. An adverb of frequency describe how often you do something.

• If I get lost, I always ask for directions. • I usually go to the beach if it’s hot. • I never drive if I drink.

d. You can use questions in the main-clause

MTRA.ITZYSEPULVEDAANDDR.MARCOSDOMÍNGUEZ -49-

CENTRODEBACHILLERATOTECNOLÓGICOindustrialydeserviciosN°108ENGLISHIII Use the regular question word order. The question is never in the if-clause.

• Do you always ask for directions if you get lost? • If you get sick, do you stay home from work?

e. You can make one or both clauses negative.

• You don’t have to eat if you’re not hungry. • I don’t ask for directions if I get lost.

f. You can use modal verbs.

A modal verb is a helping verb. It can’t be used by itself in sentence. You use a modal before another verb in the zero conditional to express an idea such as ability, necessity, or permission. In the zero conditional sentence structure, you can use could, can, must, or should, and their negative forms. In the if-clause:

• If you can’t see the TV, you need glasses. • If you can read this, thank a teacher!

In the result-clause:

• You can’t drive a car if you don’t have a license. • If you want to go to university, you must study hard. • I can’t drive if I don’t have my glasses.

FIRST CONDITIONAL

If clause Main clause

If + Present tense will / can / may / must + verb

The 1st (first) conditional sentence structure is also called the future possible/real conditional.

The first conditional has the present simple after 'if', then the future simple in the other clause:

It is used to talk about a result [I’ll get fat] that is likely to happen or is almost certain to happen in the

future IF the condition in the if clause [if I eat too much] occurs.

Generally, in the 1st conditional structure the if clause has a 50% or better chance of happening.

Example: If I eat too much, it´s possible that I will get fat. I may not get fat, but it´s more than likely that I will get

fat if I eat too much.

It's used to talk about things which might happen in the future. Of course, we can't know what will

happen in the future, but this describes possible things, which could easily come true.

First Conditional - for real possibility

If I win the lottery, I will buy a car.

We are talking about the future. We are thinking about a particular condition or situation in the future,

and the result of this condition. There is a real possibility that this condition will happen. For example,

it is morning. You are at home. You plan to play tennis this afternoon. But there are some clouds in

the sky. Imagine that it rains. What will you do?

if

Condition

Present Simple

will + base verb

If

it rains,

I will stay at home.

MTRA.ITZYSEPULVEDAANDDR.MARCOSDOMÍNGUEZ 55

CENTRODEBACHILLERATOTECNOLÓGICOindustrialydeserviciosN°108 ENGLISHIIINotice that we are thinking about a future condition. It is not raining yet. But the sky is cloudy and you think that it could rain. We use the Present Simple tense to talk about the possible future condition.

We use will + base verb to talk about the possible future result. The important thing about the first conditional is that there is a real possibility that the condition will happen.

Here are some more examples (do you remember the two basic structures: [if condition result] and [result if condition]?):

• If it rains, I won't go to the park. • If I study today, I'll go to the party tonight. • If I have enough money, I'll buy some new shoes. • She'll be late if the train is delayed. • She'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon. • If I see her, I'll tell her.

We use the First Conditional to talk about future events that are likely to happen.

• If we take John, he'll be really pleased. • If you give me some money, I'll pay you back tomorrow. • If they tell us they want it, we'll have to give it to them. • If Mary comes, she'll want to drive.

The 'if' clause can be used with different present forms.

• If I go to New York again, I'll buy you a souvenir from the Empire State Building. • If he's feeling better, he'll come. • If she hasn't heard the bad news yet, I'll tell her.

The ´future clause´ can contain 'going to' or the future perfect as well as 'will'.

• If I see him, I'm going to tell him exactly how angry I am. • If we don't get the contract, we'll have wasted a lot of time and money.

The ´future clause´ can also contain other modal verbs such as 'can' and 'must'.

• If you go to New York, you must have the cheesecake in Lindy's. • If he comes, you can get a lift home with him.

Uses of the sentence structure

Possibilities

If it rains, we won’t have our picnic.

If you stay out in the rain too long, you’ll get sick! My mom will be angry if I’m late tonight!

Superstitions

If you see a penny on the ground and pick it up, it will bring you good luck! If you

break a mirror, you will have 7 years of bad luck!

If you rub a rabbit’s foot, it will bring you good luck! If you

walk under a ladder, you will have bad luck!

You will have bad luck if you open an umbrella indoors.

Future plans

If you’re going shopping today, I’ll come with you! If you can get me a ticket, I’ll go to the concert with you! If you

see Ken later today, will you tell him to call me?

Warnings and threats

If you don’t come to my birthday party, I’ll never speak to you again. If you

eat too much ice cream, you’ll make yourself sick!<

If you say that again, I will hurt you!

Variations of this sentence structure

1. The imperative can be used in the result clause. If you call your mother tonight, tell her I said ´hello´!

Remember to buy some bananas if you go to the supermarket. If

anyone calls for me, tell them I’m not home!

2. Modals can be used in the result clause, particularl y for offers and suggestions.

If you get a new job, you should really buy nicer clothes!

I can get you a ticket to the Madonna concert if you want to go!

MTRA.ITZYSEPULVEDAANDDR.MARCOSDOMÍNGUEZ 57

CENTRODEBACHILLERATOTECNOLÓGICOindustrialydeserviciosN°108 ENGLISHIIIUse may or might to say that the future event is possible, but not definite.

If you need someone to help you move, I might be able to help. If it‟s

a sunny day tomorrow, we might have a pool party.

The present perfect can be used with the 1st conditional

The present perfect can be used in the result clause with when and after.

There is no change in the meaning of the sentence when the present perfect is used with after: Tell me what you think of the movie after you see it!

Tell me what you think of the movie after you’ve seen it.

After I find a job, I’ll look for a place to live.

After I’ve found a job, I’ll look for a place to live. I’ll finish my homework after I eat dinner.

I’ll finish my homework after I’ve eaten dinner.

Read the story and answer the following questions. A DISASTROUS DINNER Last Friday, Mrs. Anderson planned to have a delicious dinner. She bought a T-bone steak and some cream and apples for an apple pie. When she came home from the shops she put her shopping on the table. While she was setting the table, her two pets sat underneath it and watched her. Then she went to the kitchen to make the pastry for the pie. She was a little forgetful so she didn’t realize the steak, cream and apples were still on the table. While she was making the pastry, the dog jumped on a chair and looked longingly at the steak. At last it took the steak in its mouth and jumped off the chair, just as Mrs. Anderson was coming back into the dining room. Mrs. Anderson screamed, but the dog ran into the garden. She ran after the dog. While she was chasing the dog, the cat jumped on the table and started drinking the cream. Mrs. Anderson didn’t manage to catch the dog, and she came back into the dining room. When she saw the cat, she shrieked, and the cat got such a fright that it jumped a meter into the air, and leapt out the window. Mrs. Anderson threw her broom at the cat, but she missed, and broke the window. At the same time she overbalanced and put her hand in the cream, spilling it all over the tablecloth. Poor Mrs. Anderson - she had no dinner, only a dirty tablecloth and a broken window. Glossary: set the table - put knives and forks, plates, salt etc. on the table., underneath - under it., longingly - e.g. the dog wanted it but knew it couldn’t have it., shriek - louder than scream., get a fright - suddenly (not the same as be frightened)., overbalance - to lose your balance and fall. Answer these questions about the story. Answer in complete sentences.

1. What did Mrs. Anderson plan? 2. Why did she buy cream and apples? 3. When did her pets watch her? 4. Where did she leave the steak? 5. When did the dog jump on the chair? 6. How did the dog look at the steak? 7. When did the dog jump off the chair? 8. Where did the dog go? 9. What was she doing when the cat jumped on the table? 10. What did Mrs. Anderson do when she saw the cat?
