• 1) What do these lines mean to you?
• 2) Why would talking about a Revolution sound like a whisper?

RevolutionAim: What is revolution?
I. The 5 A’s Necessary for Revolution:
• 1. At least two opposing sides ▫ There needs to be people in power and people who want
that power• 2. Access to weapons
▫ This is not always true, but for most of the revolutions throughout the course of history this has been a necessity
• 3. Aims expressed in a slogan ▫ i.e. advertisements, propaganda
• 4. Accomplished leaders ▫ Every cause needs a credible (trusted) leader
• 5. Ailments present socially, economically, and politically
Understanding #5 - Ailments
•1) Political•2) Economic•3) Social
II. Political
•The political make-up of a country can greatly influence a country’s dynamics.
•This is often in relation to power; who has it and who doesn’t.
•Unevenly distributed power can lead to revolt of those who feel that their needs are not being met.
III. Economic
•Economic most often refers to money, or the transfer of goods and services to make money (profit).
•Economic factors such, as unfair taxes seen in the American Revolution, can lead to social unrest.
• Like the Political aspect, unevenly distributed resources can lead to a division of the people.
IV. Social• Social conditions refer to the make up of a
certain society.• There are many social conditions that exist in our
society today: POVERTY UNEQUAL DISTRIBUTION OF RESOURCES RACISM/DISCRIMINATATION
• A social problem is a condition that at least some people in a community view as being undesirable.
• If enough people are being mistreated, this can lead to unified action against the oppressing force.
Revisit the Lyrics:•Go back to the song from earlier in the day. •1) Label the: Social, political, and economic
factors that she is talking about in this song.•2) Does this change the meaning for you?
Why or why not?•3) Do you think that in order for her
revolution to work, there needs to be violence? If so, why? If not, how?
•When you are done, summarize your notes.
Do Now:
•What do you know about the Political Spectrum?
•Have you ever heard of it? If so, what? If not, what do you think it is?
•If you can, draw it.
In order to understand…•Revolution, we must first look at the
Political spectrum.
A Brief Explanation:The Political SpectrumAim: Where do people need to fall in order for revolution?
I. Some Vocabulary:•The Political Spectrum: A way to
classify people based on what they believe is right and wrong.
•Redistribution of Resources: Equalizing all resources (water, food, education, etc. )
•Political Ideology: Political Ideology is a certain ethical set of beliefs, or ideals, that explain how society should work.▫A political ideology largely concerns
itself with how to allocate power and to what ends it should be used.
II. The Political Spectrum
•Radical/Revolutionary •Liberal•Moderate•Conservative•Reactionary/Revolutionary
III. Radical/Revolutionary• Want change that is
immediate and sweeping. • Their goal is complete
change in the existing political system.
• Often encourage the use of violence and revolution as ways of promoting change.
• Government should control the economy by redistributing resources.
• As long as actions do not harm others, they should be legal.
* Freedom and rights cannot be compromised *
Examples:
Ernesto "Che" Guevaraand the Cuban Revoltuion
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Karl Heinrich Marx
Liberal• Accept change and believe
change should improve conditions for individuals.
• Liberals also believe that change should be achieved using moderate methods and working within the system.
• Strong government involvement and regulation of the economy.
• Redistribution of wealth and strict regulation of business by the government.
• As long as actions do not harm others, they should be legal. ▫ Loose Constitutional
interpretation. The society is emphasized.
Example
•American Democrats: The oldest continuous political party in the United States.
Moderate
•The moderate tends to stand with different groups on an issue to issue basis.
•Some moderates have strong leanings in regards to certain ideologies in partial areas such as moral conservatism and economic liberalism.
Example:• Libertarian: Libertarians are for
individual freedom - and this includes the freedom of people to do some things that we and other people may disapprove of. A person should be free (from coercive interference) to do what he/she pleases with his own life and property, as long as he does not violate (through coercive interference) the same right of other peaceful persons to do what they want with their lives and properties.
• What libertarians do oppose is the attempt by anyone (individuals or government officials) to impose their own views of "fairness" or personal morality on others through the initiation of the use of coercion, by either personal violence or political legislation and governmental action. This principled position sets libertarians apart from conservatives as well as other non-libertarians.
Conservative• Government control of the
economy should be minimal. Equal opportunity and legal business practice should be guaranteed though.
• Tend to resist change. • They believe that the well-being
of society is maintained by keeping traditions.
• They accept change only when it can be proven to be necessary. They also believe that moderate methods should be used to protect society’s interests.
• Strong moral definitions should be held. Strict criminal law and sentencing are necessary. Freedom and rights cannot be compromised. A strong emphasis is placed on the individual
Example• American Republican:
Advocates of a republic, a form of government that is not a monarchy or dictatorship, and is generally associated with the rule of law.
• The largest conservative party in the U.S.
• It is often called the Grand Old Party or the GOP.
IV. Reactionary/Revolutionary• Resist all new things,
wishing to maintain things as they have been in the past.
• Will use extreme methods (violence) to make things like they once were.
• The government owns, runs, and controls all business.
• Traditional morals (what is right and wrong) are replaced by loyalty to the government.
* Revolutionaries can also be placed here. *
Example• Fascism• The National Socialist
German Workers' Party: Nazi ideology stressed the failure of democracy, failure of laissez-faire capitalism, "racial purity of the German people" and persecuted those it perceived as race enemies.
V. Understanding Ideologies:• It is important to understand that people must
fall at the extremes of the spectrum in order to support/fight in a revolution.
• Those who fall in the liberal/moderate would not because they only want to change some things in the current system.
• Those who fall under conservative would like to maintain the current system.
• Those who are at the extremes (radical/reactionary) want to burn the system down and create a new one!
Summarize Your Notes!
Summarizing makes
me SMILE!!
Do Now:• Now that you know about
the political spectrum, where do you think that you fall? Why?
• What is your ideology? Explain!
ME? Obviously I am super-hero,
which would make me a Radical…I
make my own rules yo!
Let’s Take a Quiz!!!
•YIKES!
•Relax bro…it’s just a political spectrum quiz, silly!
