Napoleon rose to power through the military. He was able to attend French military schools which earned him his first commission as a lieutenant. He quickly progressed through the ranks to command the French forces in Italy. His participation in a coup d'état in 1799 brought him to supreme power in France as consul in 1802. He crowned himself Napoleon I in 1804. His decline began with the failed invasion of Russia in 1812. The majority of his men died and this indicated France was weak and after Paris was captured in 1814, Napoleon was exiled and the monarchy restored. He returned victoriously, raised an army, but his defeat at Waterloo June 18, 1815 finalized his decline from power.
