    UNIT 8 . VOCABULARY WB

    METAPHORS AND IDIOMS TO DO WITH THE BODY

    1.- KEEP AN EYE ON SB. look after sth or sb while someone else isnt there.

    Ex.- We asked the neighbours to keep an eye on the house for us while we were

    away.

    2.- PULL SOS LEG .- to persuade so.( to believe sth which is not true)

    Ex.- It is really your car or are you pulling my leg ?

    3.- A PAIN IN THE NECK.- an irritating person or sth one doesnt like to do.Ex.- Watering the lawn is always a pain in the neck.

    4.- PUTS ONE FOOT IN IT.- do or say sth tactless or embarrassing.

    5.- GET STH OFF ONES CHEST.- confess sth usually unpleasant.

    6.- PLAY IT BY EAR.- improvise according to the situation.

    Ex.- He plays his negotiations by ear , going into them with no clear or fixed plan.

    7.- PUT A BRAVE FACE ON IT .- show courage by minimizing the problem.

    Ex. Theyve had some bad luck , but theyve put a brave face on their problems.

    8.- PUT ONES FINGER ON IT.- precisely identify something, especially a problem.

    Ex.- When she mention money , she really put her finger on the problem.

    9.- BE ON THE TIP OF ONES TONGUE.- sth that you can almost, but not quiteremember.

    Ex.- I have his name right on the tip of my tongue.

    10.-GIVE SO. THE COLD SHOULDER.- deliberately ignore or be unfriendly to so.

    Ex.- He gave me the cold shoulder the whole evening at the party.

    9.- SYNONYMS.

    TO CRUSH.- To press or squeeze sth very hard. Ex.- They crushed the olives with

    a heavy wooden press.

    To destroy sb confidence or happiness. Ex.- She felt completely

    crushed by the teachers criticism.

    TO SNAP.- To break sth suddenly with a sharp noise Ex.- Suddenly the rope

    snapped.

    To lose control . ex.- My patience finally snapped.

    TO CRACK.- To break without dividing into separate parts. Ex.- he has cracked a

    bone in his arm.To no longer be able to function normally because of pressure.

    Ex.- They questioned him for days before he cracked.

    TO SPLINTER.- (of a group of people) . To divide into smaller groups that are not

    longer connected. To separate from a large group.

    Ex.- several firms have splintered off from the original company.

    .- To break into small sharp pieces.

    BREAK.- To destroy. To be damaged and separated into two or more parts as a

    result of force.

    Ex. He broke the chocolate in two

    To do sth better, faster etc than anyone has ever done it before.

    Ex.- she has broken the world 100 metres record.

    SHATTER.- (into sth) Suddenly break into small pieces. Ex.- He dropped the vase

    and it shattered into pieces on the floor.

    - To destroy sbs feelings, hopes or beliefs. Ex.- Her experience ofdivorce shattered her illusions about love.

    BURST.- To break , open or apart , especially because of pressure from inside.

    Ex. The river bursts its banks and flooded nearby towns.

    A strong period of a particular activity or strong emotion that often

    starts suddenly. Ex.- her breath was coming in short bursts.
