SHILOH APRIL 6-7, 1862

Tennessee

I.  After the Confederate victory at Bull Run/Manassas Lincoln requested more soldiers A.  War will not be over quickly

II.  In 1862 the Union Army invaded Tennessee in an attempt to control the Mississippi River

III.  General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army was able to defeat the Confederate Army near the town of Shiloh, TN

IV.  The Battle of Shiloh demonstrated how bloody & violent the war would be

V.  100,000 soldiers à 25,000 were killed during Shiloh

FALL OF NEW ORLEANS APRIL 20, 1862

I.  Following Grant’s victory at Shiloh in Tennessee the Union Army captured another key victory in New Orleans

II.  The Union Navy captured the city of New Orleans in April 1862

A.  New Orleans controls the Mississippi River B.  River runs right through the south à if the rive is controlled

the south would be cut in two

III.  The Union plan to divide the south was almost complete à city of Vicksburg, MS was the last Confederate stronghold on the river

Louisiana

ANTIETAM/SHARPSBURG SEPTEMBER 16-18, 1862

Maryland

I.  In late 1862 General Lee planned to invade Union territory in an attempt to take the US capital Washington, D.C.

II.  Lee wanted a signature victory to gain British support for the southern effort

III.  Confederate & Union armies fought for three days at Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland

IV.  Battle ended when both Confederate & Union armies withdrew (stalemate)

V.  Single bloodiest battle of the Civil War A.  Over 26,000 troops KIA at Antietam

I.  In 1863 the American Civil War was entering the third year of violence between north and south

II.  Most people believed the war would be over quickly à ending with a Union victory

III.  Ending the war is the number one goal of both north and south
