Reasons for Westward Expansion I.  US army defeated many Native American

tribes clearing the way for new settlements

II.  Improved transportation methods westward A.  Cumberland Road à connected Baltimore to

II.  The Missouri Compromise: A.  Missouri was admitted as a slave state B.  Maine was admitted as a free state

i.  Kept the sectional balance between slave & free states C.  Slavery was prohibited north of 36º 30' latitude line, that was

the southern border of Missouri

III.  Compromise was largely accepted by both sides A.  South got Missouri another slave state B.  North could forbid slavery in the territories above the 36º 30'

line & got Maine
