Past and current video installation practice From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas in some way. One should be a past practitioner, the other should be contemporary. Past Practitioner

Name: Vito Acconci

Biography Vito Acconci is a landscape architect and installation artist. His

installations and art landscapes can be found displayed all around the

world in a variety of different ways most in a non narrative form as

Acconci is very abstract with his work and likes to leave the audience

guessing.

Images

Notes on their installation Very abstract. Does many of his works from a point of view shot.

How is it similar to your ideas? Showing angles from a POV shot.

Contemporary Practitioner

Name: Douglas Gordon

Biography Scottish artist, mainly based in the video art and photography field. He’s

the creator of the well known 24 hour Psycho (1993) that involved

slowing down Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Psycho, so it lasts 24 hours, on a

repeated loop. His installations have been in art museums all around the

world like The Museum of Modern Art and TATE Modern.

Images

Notes on their installation Likes to use a whole room with big screens.

How is it similar to your ideas? With ‘Play Dead, Real Time’ he has the camera at floor level and so on level with the main characters

Sound design

What sound will your animation have? Mumbling noises and voices at times, very simple scripting.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound? Headphones

Why? It’s a secret world that no ones meant to know about so with the animation being played in a slightly hidden place I was it to seem like the audience are eavesdropping on the characters of my animation.

Lighting design What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety. Very dim lighting, fairy lights surrounding the screen and surrounding area.

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

Projection vs screen

Will you project your video or play it on a screen? Play it on a small screen.

If you are using a screen, will you use a single screen, or multiple screens?

Single.

Why?

To keep the viewing very intimate and

keep that secretive feeling around.

If you are projecting… what will you project ONTO? (ie fabric, screen, materials etc)

How will that change how your audience READS your animation? It will make the whole thing feel very secretive and like the audience are in on the secret.

Technological convergence

What is technological convergence? Technological convergence is the tendency for different technological systems to evolve toward performing similar tasks.

Will you be using this in your installation? No

Explain your answer. I’m only going to use a screen in order to keep it all very simplistic and quiet.

How have the following influenced your ideas?

□ work of the artists you have researched The thought of the work coming from the point of view of the main characters.

□ venue and facilites Knowing there were going to be quite a few different installtions being played in the room at the same time I wanted to make mine quite simple and small being able to hide away to add to the secretive effect.

□ lighting I wanted to keep the lighting very simple and less elaborate than maybe some of the other installations due to my animation being a ‘secret’.

□ Sound -

□ screens / projectors Because my animation is all filmed on location and on floor level – with the toys – I wanted to keep that with the screens. Which is why’ve I decided to screen it on a small tv/computer screen at ground level to make the audience feel part of the madness.

□ speakers / headphones Due to my animation being thought of of a ‘secret’ I wanted to keep my sound also very hidden and private. I decided to project the sound through headphones instead of speakers because I wanted to make it feel like the audience were on on the secret and were listening in on something they shouldn’t be hearing.

Copyright issues

What potential copyright issues could your animation infringe? If I included any sounds or if any of my models were similar in anyway to characters already created.

How can you be certain that your work does not violate any copyright infringements? Because I haven’t created any of my characters (i.e. out of modelling clay) therefore I haven’t taken anyone elses ideas and put them into my own animation.
