Form:

S + Ved/v2 + O

S + DID NOT + V1 ( bare-infi ) + o

(positive)

Usage: simple past is used to expresses

a finished action in the past

actions that follow each other in a story

a past situation or habit

Note: spelling of verb + ED

most verb add –ed to the base form of the Verb worked, wanted, watched

when the V ends in –e, add –d liked, used, hated

V has only one syllable (1vowel+ 1consonant), double consonant before adding –ed

stopped, planned, robbed

Consonant is not doubled if it is “-Y”, “-W” played, showed

In 2-syllable V, the end consonant is doubled if the stress is on the second syllable

pre’ferred, ad’mitted

V that ends in a consonant +-y, change –y to -ied Carried, burried, hurried

Ex:

They were a doctor.

My father was a carpenter.

I visited my friend yesterday. Mary bought a new novel 2 days ago.

Peter played a football yesterday.

Complete these sentences

Form:

Usage: to express an activity that was complete before another activity or time in the past

Ex: When I came, he had left The patient had died before the doctor

arrived. By the time we arrived, the party had

finished. After we had discussed it on the phone, I

wrote him a letter about it. When she had already gone out the office

this morning, Jim rang.
