Select an artwork by the artist Sally Mann to analyse and discuss using the questions

below. You will have to do additional research using articles, internet, video etc. Answer

these questions using full sentences. Use the question to begin your answer if need be.

1. Describe what is going on in the image. What is actually depicted?

2. What do you think is happening in the image? What might the story behind the image be?

3. What are some of the key influences on the photographer?

4. Research the photographer and discuss the cultural context that these images were created in.

5. What ideas or meanings do you think the photographer is trying to convey in this image? What is

he/she trying to tell us as the viewer?

6. What materials and techniques has the photographer used to create this image?

7. What processes has the photographer used? (is it digital, 35mm black and white etc?)

8. Describe the work – what does it look like? (Imagine you are explaining to someone who cannot see

it)

9. How has the artist developed their style? Research what training might they have done, who taught

them, where did they start out?

10. What are some of the legal and ethical considerations involved in the making of these works?
