Sojourn Kids Assembly Unit 25 Session 4 September 20, 2020 Title: Jesus Was Arrested Scripture: Matthew 26:36-7:2 Main Point: Jesus was betrayed and arrested. Big Picture Question: Why do believers share the Lord’s Supper? (Believers share the Lord’s Supper to remember Jesus’ life and death, and to proclaim Him until He returns.) Key Passage: Luke 4:18 Introduce It (Hook): Grab their attention! This is where you introduce the big idea and answer the question, “Why is this lesson important?” Ask: Have you ever had a friend who needed help with something? Was it easy or hard helping them? Now, what if they made you mad or sad, and then they still needed help. Would it be just as easy, or would it be harder to help them? Say: Now, I’m going to make it even harder. What if your friend made you mad, and then you got in trouble for something they did, would you take the blame for them even if you didn’t do anything wrong? Let a couple of kids answer. Say: Last week we learned about the last supper that Jesus shared with his disciples. Today’s story happened right after the last supper. We’re going to hear a story about the hour that Jesus knew was coming. Jesus knew about God’s plan to save sinners through him. He knew that he would take the blame for us by suffering and dying on the cross so that we could be forgiven. Explain It (Book): This is where you school ‘em! This is the section where you tell the story and answer the question, “What’s the story about?” Say: At Sojourn Kids we learn from the bible, God’s Word. We know that God’s words are holy, they are true, and they are for our good. It is a good gift that we get to come, hear, and learn from God’s Word together today. Our story today is found in the in all four of the gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The gospels are books in the New Testament that tell us about Jesus’ life on earth. Tell the Story: Jesus knew what was coming. He knew that God’s plan to save the world meant that he would die on the cross. He could have very well said, “no! I don’t deserve this!” and not gone ahead, but he didn’t. Instead, he prayed. Late at night, after the Lord’s Supper, Jesus took Peter and two other disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Read Matthew 26:39 “...he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Say: Jesus wanted God’s plan. When he got up from praying he went to his disciples who were keeping watch, and he found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with

Say: Last week we learned about the last supper that Jesus shared
with his disciples. Today’s story happened right after the last
supper. We’re going to hear a story about the hour that Jesus knew
was coming. Jesus knew about God’s plan to save
sinners through him. He knew that he would take the blame for us by

Explain It (Book): This is where you school ‘em! This is the
section where you tell the story and answer the question, “What’s
the story about?” Say: At Sojourn Kids we learn from the bible,
God’s Word. We know that God’s words are holy, they are true, and
they are for our good. It is a good gift that we get to come, hear,
and learn from God’s Word together today. Our story today is found
in the in all four of the gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The gospels are books in the New Testament that tell us about
Jesus’ life on earth. Tell the Story: Jesus knew what was coming.
He knew that God’s plan to save the world meant that he would die
on the cross. He could have very well said, “no! I don’t deserve
this!” and not gone ahead, but he didn’t. Instead, he prayed. Late
at night, after the Lord’s Supper, Jesus took Peter and two other
disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Read Matthew 26:39
“...he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, My Father, if
it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will,
but as you will.” Say: Jesus wanted God’s plan. When he got up from
praying he went to his disciples who were keeping watch, and he
found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “So, could you not watch
with
me one hour?” Jesus went back to pray and then returned to find
them sleeping again. After the third time, Jesus had a message for
them.
Read Matthew 26:45-46 “ Are you still sleeping and resting? Look,
the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of
sinners. Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Say: Suddenly, Judas arrived while guiding a large crowd carrying
swords and clubs. Judas pretended to be Jesus’ friend, but he was
really his enemy. He betrayed Jesus with a kiss to show the crowd
who Jesus was. Then the soldiers in the crowd grabbed Jesus to
arrest him. Ask: What would you have done if you were Jesus? What
would you have done if you were one of the disciples there with Him
in the garden as He was being arrested? Say: Jesus didn’t run away
and hide. He didn’t fight. He knew what was happening the whole
time. He knew this was part of God’s plan. Say: Peter saw what was
happening and pulled out a sword to try and fight. He didn’t
understand that this is what Jesus had been waiting for. Peter took
out his sword, and he even cut off a soldier’s ear! Jesus said,
“Peter, put away your sword.” Jesus didn’t want anyone’s help--he
wanted God’s plan. And that meant that he had to let the soldiers
arrest him. The time had come for him to suffer and die on the
cross for our sin.
Say: After Jesus was arrested the soldiers marched Him to the house
of the high priest, Caiaphas, where all of the religious
leaders were waiting. All of the leaders tried to accuse Jesus of
things he didn’t do. Ask: If someone blamed you for something you
didn’t do, what would you do? Would you keep quiet? Would you try
to defend yourself? Say: The religious leaders said all kinds of
untrue things about Jesus, but Jesus didn’t fight back. He didn’t
try to set the record straight. He stayed silent. Many people came
forward with lies about Jesus to try and find a reason to kill him,
but they did not find one. Then the high priest said to him, “Tell
us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” Read Matthew 26:64 “
You have said so, “ Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From
now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the
Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Say: Then the high
priest said, “Look! He has spoken against God! What do you think we
should do?” The crowd said, “He deserves to die!” Say: The crowd
spit in his face and began hitting and beating him. They didn’t
want to believe Jesus was who he said he was, so they punished him
for lying, even though everything he said was true. Say: As Peter
was watching nearby, a servant asked him, “Are you one of Jesus’
disciples?” Peter responded, “No! I don’t know what you are talking
about.” Peter denied Jesus two more times and pretended that he
didn’t know Jesus.
Say: The next morning, the religious leaders made plans about how
they were going to kill Jesus. They took him away and put him
before Pilate, the governor. Connect it (Look): Apply it &
Answer “How?” This section helps us to apply the main truths of the
story to the kids lives. We pray that they’ll see their sin and
their need for the Savior. Say: Jesus’ friends had turned against
him, but that didn’t stop Jesus from following God’s plan. He
didn’t try to defend himself against the people arresting him, and
he didn’t try to ask for help. He knew that this was part of God’s
plan all along and that he had to take all of the punishment of our
sin on himself. Say: Jesus didn’t deserve to die, but he loved us
so much and didn’t want us to be forever separated from God because
of our sin. The only way that our relationship with God could be
fixed was if a perfect person paid the full price of our sin by
taking on the punishment we deserve. Jesus came to die so that we
might live in relationship with God if we believe and trust in him!
SAY: And every week, those who trust in Jesus remember this by
sharing in the Lord’s Supper. Do you remember our big picture
question? Why do believers share the Lord’s Supper? (Believers
share the Lord’s Supper to remember Jesus’ life and death, and to
proclaim Him until He returns.) Pray Dear God, thank you for loving
us so much more than we deserve. Thank you for sending Jesus to die
in our place, so that our relationship with you can be fixed
forever if we believe and trust in Him! Please continue to remind
us this week of
how much you love us, so that we might share this good news with
others. Amen. Written by: Ashley Stevenson

MAIN POINT: JESUS WAS BETRAYED AND ARRESTED.
Jesus came with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said
to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” Jesus became
very sad and troubled. He fell facedown and prayed, “Father! If it
is possible, spare Me from this. But I want to do Your plan.”
Jesus came back and found the disciples asleep. He said, “Get up,
for it is almost time. Someone is going to betray Me.”
Suddenly Judas arrived. A large crowd was with him. Judas kissed
Jesus so the crowd would know who Jesus was. The men grabbed Jesus
and arrested Him. Peter pulled out his sword and tried to fight the
men, but Jesus told Peter to put away his sword.
The men who arrested Jesus led Him to the house of Caiaphas the
high priest. The high priest asked, “Do You have anything to say?
Are You the Messiah, the Son of God?”
Jesus replied, “Yes, that’s right.” Caiaphas and the religious
leaders did not want to believe that Jesus is God’s
Son. They said Jesus was lying, but Jesus was telling the truth!
The next morning, the religious leaders took Him to Pilate, the
governor.
Christ Connection: Jesus knew that His death was God’s plan to save
people from sin. Jesus’ friends turned against Him and He was
arrested and put on trial, but Jesus followed His Father’s plan in
order to bring salvation to the world.
