A player’s mean average may not have that great of an effect on their standing. Take

Mario Lemieux for example: he has the highest mean average number of points per game,

but he’s ninth in total points.

Page 4: Unit 2 Review document

g) Those on the top seem to have a higher average number of games plated, but there are also

some near the bottom who played some of the higher number of games e.g. Ray Bourque.

h) For both cases, there are exceptions to the rule. For question “f”, Wayne Gretzky has the 2nd

best mean-per-game average, but Howe and Messier only have mediocre mean averages, yet

they’re still near the top. For question “g”, there is a very disconnected relationship with how

many games played and the player’s standing in the top ten list.

e) 47, 000,000

f) Vincent Can Gogh’s portrait of Dr. Gachet sold for the most amount of money, at

$112,500,000. Out of all the paintings of Van Gogh’s on the top ten list, collectively, his works

sold for $ 183,500,000. The painter’s word that sold for the most collectively was Picasso, with

total sales at $351,500,000.

g) There appears to be no solid relationship between the year that the painting was sold, and the

price it was sold at, save for the year 1990 –which is when the two most expensive paintings

were sold.

c) The most affected measure of central tendency is the mean.

4. a) Both the grade that Ms. Wise and Mark presented were forms of central tendency and

expressions of averages.

b)My opinion is that neither the mode (which Ms. Wise used) nor the median (which Mark used)

are the best expressions of Mark’s biology average. Rather, the mean average would give the

best understanding of Mark’s grades.

b) Although the circle graphs make it appear that Nunavut has twice as many young people as

British Columbia, the amount of a circle that an age category occupies is only relative to the total

population of that province or territory. So it is true that Nunavut has more people aged 0 – 14

proportionately, than British Columbia.

c)The population of people aged 65 and older may be significantly lower in the Northern

provinces than in either Manitoba or British Columbia because they have retired and desire to

live in a warmer climate, or maybe the elderly can’t receive the care they need in the more

isolated and lower population provinces/territories.
