STRUCTURAL MATERIALS

• Timber, stone, brick - oldest most traditional materials. Generally limited to smaller structures.

• STEEL Widely used from thinnest sheets to solid sections.Good in tension, not quite so good in compression.Used in solid sections, reinforcing bars, tubular sections and cables

• CONCRETEPredates steel/iron as a construction material. Good in compression, weak in tension – hence reinforced concrete
