Keeping a healthy lifestyle is important for teenagers. Teenagers need to practice good habits and have a positive outlook in life. Those who do not

follow a good set of habits can become victims of many illnesses. One such illness is anorexia nervosa. It is an eating disorder that affects many people these days. People who are affected by this disorder are mainly teenage girls who see themselves as being overweight even though they are not. However it can also affect teenage boys and adult women and men. People with anorexia nervosa, often called anorexia, have an intense fear of gaining weight. They are obsessed with food and limit their food intake even though they may be too thin. Anorexia is more than just a problem with food. It is a way of using food as a means of starving oneself and dealing with emotional problems. In doing this, they

feel they are more in control of their life. Teenagers who suffer from anorexia nervosa have the wrong idea about their weight.

The disorder is mainly characterised by constant dieting, rapid weight loss and the feeling of being too fat even during weight loss. The term ‘anorexia

nervosa’ refers to the loss of appetite due to nerves. However, people with anorexia do feel hungry but refuse to give in to their hunger and would rather starve themselves. Teenagers with anorexia may look very thin and use radical measures to lose weight. A modern-day illness, the victims of the disorder show some clear, physical behaviour.

In an effort to remain thin, victims of this disorder constantly make themselves vomit after consuming food. They will make up excuses to go to the bathroom or toilet to get rid of the food they have just eaten. Failing this, they may even resort to taking pills that stimulate urination or cause constipation. Those who can afford it will take diet pills which are available in clinics. Some teenagers refuse to eat or they eat very little. They chew small bites for long stretches of time as they are obsessed with weight gain. Such behaviour makes them very unpopular and consequently results in them feeling isolated as more and more friends avoid them.

In other situations, teenagers who suffer from anorexia nervosa exercise frequently even in bad weather or when they are physically thin. They begin to take up long-distance running and spend a lot of time doing heavy exercises. This is because of the misconception that they are fat or overweight. Society is partly to blame for this as it places too much emphasis on how one looks. Do not be surprised if you come across anorexia victims who weigh and count the calories they take every day! Other physical signs are dry skin and thinning hair on the head. They may also experience a growth of fine hair all over their body.

Teenagers with anorexia are often in a bad mood. They have a hard time concentrating and are always thinking about food. They are always hungry too and feeling hungry gives them a sense of control over their lives and their bodies. Severe anorexia can lead to death. If you notice your friend having such symptoms, you can help him or her by setting aside some time to talk privately about it. Tell your friend your concerns and that he or she may need professional help. You may even ask the school counsellor to help in the matter. What is most important is trust. Avoid pushing your friend into admitting he or she has a problem. Convince your friend that you will always be there to listen when he or she is ready to tell you about it. Eventually, you will need to persuade your friend to seek medical help.

Support from family members is also crucial. The most important thing that family and friends can do to help a person with anorexia is to love them. They must learn about the disorder too so as to give them emotional support. Most cases of this disorder can be solved provided the family plays a role in helping the victims get back their self-esteem and confidence.

The adults paid no attention to this; they did not even hear the funny chatter; they sat waiting for rain; their nerves were stretched to breaking-point willing the rain to fall out of the sky. Nothing was important, beyond that. All their animals had been sold during the bad years to purchase food, and of all their herd only two goats were left. It was the women of the family who finally broke down under the strain of waiting for rain. It was really the two women who caused the death of the little girls. Each night they started a weird, high-pitched wailing that began on a low, mournful note and whipped up to frenzy.
