Debrief

O Solomon Asch’s experiments, first in 1951 and repeated

several times in the following years, set out to measure

conformity, NOT perception.

O Solomon Asch was born and raised in the ghettos of

Warsaw, Poland and escaped the Holocaust. He wanted to

test to what extent Nazi soldiers were guilty of their actions.

Debrief

O Seven of the 8 participants were “confederates;” they gave

preplanned answers.

O Sometimes they gave the correct answer, sometimes

purposefully wrong.

O We tested to see if the 8th person, the “subject,” would

conform to the group.

O On a few occasions, the subject had a “partner,” who gave

the wrong answer purposefully.
