A Place to Call Home


• The place where a living thing lives is called its habitat.

• All of the needs of a living thing must be met within its habitat.

• Mountain, jungle, polar, ocean, desert, and grassland are types of habitats.


Adaptations


• A characteristic that helps a living thing survive is called an adaptation.

• Animals that survive better because of a new characteristic are more likely to reproduce and pass that characteristic on to their young.

• Physical adaptations are differences in the bodies of plants and animals.

• Some adaptations protect living things from being eaten.

• Camouflage is a physical adaptation that helps keep an animal hidden.

another animal that it is dangerous.

• Mimicry is a physical adaptation that makes some animals resemble each other.

• Animals that hunt have physical adaptations that help them catch food.

• Some seeds are carried by the wind.

• Other seeds are inside berries. Once eaten, the seeds are carried to a new location.

• Migration occurs when animals move to different locations at certain times of the year.
