Sentences and FragmentsA sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought.

Every sentence begins with the capital letter. Most sentences end in a period, which is sometimes called the end punctuation.

A statement, or declarative sentence, tells something. It ends with a period (.).

A question, or interrogative sentence, asks something. It ends with a question mark (?).

1. Thanksgiving is a holiday.

2. The fourth Thursday in November.

3. Some cities have parades.

4. Families the weekend.

5. My family went to a spring.

6. We had a picnic.

7. The table full of good food.

8. We all had a wonderful time together.

A command tells someone to do something. It ends with a period.

A command is a sentence that gives an order. It ends with a period (.).

An exclamation, or exclamatory sentence, shows excitement or strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation mark (!).

Every sentence has a subject and a predicate. The subject tells what or whom the sentence is about. A complete subject is all the words in a

A complete subject of a sentence can be one word, more than one word, or a compound subject connected by “and”.
