FLYTE: faith. life. together. is designed to be the most relevant and easy-to-use preteen curriculum available. FLYTE answers preteens’ toughest questions by actively engaging them in the study of God’s Word.

Get Started• During this portion of the Bible study, preteens will get excited

about the session’s subject. • Each Get Started section has a countdown timer to help preteens

know when the session will begin. Cue the video to the “Takeoff” portion of the DVD and play the episode three minutes prior to your designated start time.

• A “Weird of the Day” will appear immediately after the countdown clock reaches zero. The “Weird of the Day” may or may not (most of the time NOT!) have anything to do with the session topic.

• Preteens will then complete a high-energy activity to really get them excited about the topic and to get them thinking about what they will be learning.

• Following the high-energy activity, preteens will be challenged with a more thoughtful activity to gauge their current knowledge of the session topic.

• A funny video will be used regularly to help preteens further engage in the session topic. Videos are used in different sections of each session in order to keep the preteens’ attention.

Faith: God’s Answer• Each Faith section involves preteens actively engaging in God’s

Word to seek out Scripture about the session topic.• Preteens will study a unit memory passage during each four-

week unit. Be sure to show preteens the music video several times during each unit, as it will reinforce the memory passage. Music videos can be found under the title “Music Video” on each session’s video menu.

• Preteens will learn the background of the Scripture reference, as well as tips for applying the Scripture to their lives.

• Videos will be used regularly to help preteens understand the topic from a biblical perspective.

Life: World’s Answer• During this portion of the Bible study, preteens will be encouraged

to discuss and explore the world’s opinion about the session topic.• The Life section will confront the untruths preteens learn through

the media, television, their friends, and sometimes their family members.

• Preteens will learn that although not everything the world tells them is bad, there is only one perfect truth—and that comes from God. Preteens can know God’s truth through studying the Bible, seeking godly friends and leaders, and fellowshipping with other believers.

• Videos will be used regularly to help preteens understand the world’s point of view.

Together: My Answer• During this portion of the Bible study, preteens will create their

response to the question of the day.• Preteens are encouraged to look at God’s answer that they

learned during the Faith section and formulate a response to the session’s topic with the awareness of the world’s view of the topic.

• This is the point in FLYTE at which preteens are encouraged to develop their own biblical worldview so that they are prepared to answer with God’s truth when the world asks them questions.

• Videos will regularly be used to help preteens further develop their responses to the session topic.

• Over and Out reiterates in clear, simple terms the main points of the session.

About the Bonus Session• Bonus sessions and fellowship ideas are available at the end of

each volume in the leader guide and FLYTE magazine. Both of these options can be used at any time.

• Christmas bonus sessions are found in Volumes 2 and 6.• Easter bonus sessions are in Volumes 3 and 7.

and to fellowship with Christians who will encourage them in their walks with Christ.

Session 2: Where Do I Fit in at Church?• Bible passage: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31• Every person is important to God and can be used by God

to spread the good news. Each spiritual gift is important and necessary to the body of Christ. Preteens have a purpose for Christ. They can serve Christ.

Session 3: Can I Serve Too?• Bible passage: 1 Timothy 4:6-16• Christianity is not a spectator sport. Preteens have a purpose.

They can serve God at church, at home, and in their communities.

Session 4: Does My Money Count?• Bible passage: Mark 12:41-44; Malachi 3:10• Preteens can be good stewards of their time, talents, gifts, and

the resources that God has given them to help others know about God and Jesus.

Teacher Bible Study >>>The first believers devoted themselves with passion and vigor to the purposes of learning, discipleship, fellowship, and prayer. As a result, early Christians witnessed many wonders, signs, and miracles.

Do you have that same passion for reading and studying God’s Word? Do you devote yourself daily to prayer and to encouraging fellow believers? When is the last time your church—your local body of believers—witnessed God’s power or provision in a truly miraculous way, or witnessed God changing lives in unimaginable ways?

The Christian life is not about you. It’s not designed to be lived independently. God designed the church to be a body of believers who devote themselves under the headship of Christ to studying the Bible, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Read Acts 2:41-47. The new believers pooled their resources for the common good of all. They knew that everything they had was given to them by God and therefore belonged to Him. Take an honest look at how you use the resources God gives you. Do you tithe? Do you help those in need? Do you give faithfully and sacrificially?

The early church met daily. Are you involved in a local Bible study or small group? Do you meet regularly to encourage other believers and to be encouraged? The Book of Acts records that with a joyful and humble attitude the new believers were praising God and having favor with all the people. Does this describe your church?

Pray. Ask God to renew your devotion to Him, His work, and His people. Pray that preteens would find joy in coming to church.

FLYTE Plan

Preteens go to church to learn about Jesus, to pray with others, and to fellowship with Christians who will encourage them in their walks with Christ.

Bible Study Acts 2:41-47

Memory Passage 1 John 3:16-17

Level of Biblical Learning (Church): The church is a fellowship of baptized believers where all people are welcome and wanted. The functions of the church are evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, and worship.

Session OverviewThis session will answer the age-old question, “Do I have to?” Preteens will learn that attending church is an important part of their spiritual growth. A rousing game, in-depth Bible study, and video will help preteens understand the importance of Christian fellowship.

Get Started >>>Takeoff

• Play “Church Session 1: Takeoff” (DVD) three minutes before the designated start time for the session.

• Allow preteens a minute or two to talk about the Weird of the Day.

Wall Ball• Form pairs of preteens. • Invite a pair to stand behind the start line.• Give a small bouncy ball to one player in the pair.• Conduct a game of “Wall Ball.”• Instruct the players with the balls to throw the ball toward the wall. • The remaining players in each group should race to tag the wall,

shout “Church!” and try to catch the ball before it bounces on the floor.

• The player in the pair who caught the ball should shout “Church!” again.

• Allow another pair to play. • Repeat and continue play for several rounds.• Ask for volunteers to state what they think they might be learning

about in today’s lesson. (church)

The Rocks: Church• Cue the DVD to “The Rocks.” As they watch the video, encourage

preteens to think about why people go to church.• Call for volunteers to answer the following questions:

» Do you ever complain about going to church? » What motivates you to go to church? » Why did Rocklet change his mind about church? Was this a good reason?

Graffiti Wall• Distribute markers and direct attention to the Graffiti Wall. • Invite preteens to write on the Graffiti Wall why they come to

church. (If your class size is small, ask preteens to write several reasons so that the Graffiti Wall is covered with writing.)

• Encourage preteens to make their writing look like graffiti.• Challenge preteens to be honest. If a preteen comes to church

because his mom makes him, he should write that on the Graffiti Wall.

• Instruct preteens to be seated. Read and discuss several of the answers.

Get Ready• “Church Session 1: Takeoff,”

“The Rocks: Church (Feature)” (DVD)

• small bouncy balls• markers• large sheet of paper—Attach

to a focal wall for use as a Graffiti Wall.

• masking tape—Mark a start line on the floor 10 feet from an empty wall.

T IP: Small bouncy balls are hard to catch. If your preteens have trouble catching the ball, consider using a larger bouncing ball.

Faith: God’s Answer >>>Memory Passage: 1 John 3:16-17

• Display the “1 John 3:16-17 Poster” (Item 1). Invite preteens to read the passage aloud one time together.

• Distribute FLYTE magazines and guide preteens to “Memory Mini” on page 7.

• Remark that in order to understand what 1 John 3:16-17 means, preteens will look carefully at three main phrases: laid down His life, world’s goods, and closes his eyes to his need.

• Instruct them to complete their “Memory Mini” by using words or drawings to illustrate what each phrase means.

• Help preteens understand the following points: » Jesus voluntarily gave His life for others. No one forced Jesus to make the sacrifices He made.

» Worldly goods are any resources such as money, time, clothes, and food that one possesses and can share with others to help them in their time of need.

» When a person closes his eyes to someone else’s need, he is deliberately choosing to ignore the need of another human being—a need that he has the resources to meet.

» God wants Christians to share their resources with others and to care about the needs of others.

• OPTION: Show the “Brother in Need” music video from the DVD.

What Is It?• Ask preteens to share what they believe church is. • Invite volunteers to read aloud “Church Is” on page 7 of the

FLYTE magazine.• Guide preteens to understand that a church is more than just a

building. The church is: » all believers in Christ. » God’s plan for followers of Christ. » a group of Christians who meet together to pray, to tell others about Jesus, to worship God, to learn from the Bible, to meet the needs of others, and to encourage one another.

• Distinguish the local church as a group of baptized believers at a particular place.

Amplify It• Form four groups. • Explain that the Amplified® Bible is written with additional

definitions and meanings of key words. In the Amplified Bible, 1 John 3:17 reads, “If anyone has this world’s goods (resources for sustaining life) … .”*

• Distribute one “Amplify It” card (Item 2) to each group. If your class size is small, work as one or two groups and distribute cards evenly.

• Ask the groups to use the dictionaries and Bible dictionaries

Get Ready• “Brother in Need (Music

provided to create their own amplified versions of the key words from the memory passage.

Study the Bible: Acts 2:41-47• Direct preteens’ attention to “The Church” on page 8 of the

FLYTE magazine.• Designate volunteers to look up the following verses:

» Acts 2:41-42 » Acts 2:43-45 » Acts 2:46 » Acts 2:46-47

• Invite the first volunteer to read his portion the Bible story aloud. When he gets to the word teaching, instruct him to pause and allow the group that was assigned the word teaching to read its amplified definition.

• Provide further insight by challenging preteens with other translations of the passage to read them aloud from their Bibles.

• Encourage preteens to write the amplified definition in their FLYTE magazines.

• Continue in this manner until preteens complete the Bible story.

The Bottom Line• Guide preteens to understand that individual believers make up

the church or the body of Christ.• Remind them that the local church or group of believers exists to

pray together, tell others about Jesus, worship God, learn from the Bible, meet the needs of others, and encourage one another.

• Discuss how your local church fulfills those roles. » When and how do members meet to pray together? » How is your church actively working to tell others about Jesus or to meet the needs of others?

Life: World’s Answer >>>Flashback

• Form six small groups. Give each group one of the “Flashback Photos” (Item 3).

• Explain that they are going to examine what the world says about church and church attendance.

• Allow each group a couple of minutes to look at its photo and to read the caption.

• Invite the groups to share and explain their “Flashback Photos” to the class.

• Discuss whether preteens have ever heard someone say that about church and whether they think the remark is true or untrue.

Text It• Ask preteens, “What do you think is the number one reason

people don’t go to church?”• Allow preteens to share their answers.• Direct their attention to the “Graffiti Wall” and ask if those

responses match or are opposite of any of the reasons they listed on the “Graffiti Wall.”

• Discuss why some of those reasons printed on the “Graffiti Wall” might keep preteens from attending church.

• Explain that the number one reason people say they do not go to church is because they are not invited.

• Challenge preteens to invite at least one person to church next week.

• OPTION: Invite preteens to text a couple of their friends whom they know do not attend church and ask them why they do not go to church. Encourage preteens to read aloud the responses they receive.

Together: My Answer >>>Flash Forward

• Instruct preteens to return to their small groups.• Direct their attention to “Flashback Photos” and to “God’s

Answers” on page 9 of the FLYTE magazine.• Invite the groups to study “God’s Answers” and identify the

Scripture that best answers the comment on their “Flashback Photos.”

• Discuss “God’s Answers” as a group. • Help preteens understand that even though the world may say

negative things about church and church attendance, God’s Word provides the final say. His Word is true and is what counts!

Church Attitude Scale• Explain to preteens that you will survey their attitudes about

attending a variety of events.• Instruct preteens to stand tall if the event is something they love

to attend and to stoop low if they don’t.• Read the following events. Pause after each event to discuss

preteens’ answers: » Concert » School » Vacation » Dentist » Sports Practice » Mall » Church

• Share that attending church is a privilege; preteens should be excited that they get to attend.

Over and Out• Dismiss preteens with these final thoughts:

» The church is more than just a building. » The church is made up of believers of all times and places. » Church members meet regularly to pray together, to tell others about Jesus, to worship together, to learn from God’s Word, and to meet the needs of others.

• Pray, thanking God for your local church. Ask God to help preteens become actively involved in meeting the needs of others. Ask God to give preteens the courage to invite someone to church next week and to speak to others about Jesus.
