A. Common traps- Words in a different context
Some words have different meanings, depending on how they are used. The word park may appear with trees and flowers or with cars. Make sure the word in the answer you choose has the appropriate meaning. You might hear one word in a statement or question but not understand that word in the situation given.

A. Adverbs of frequencyAdverbs of frequency can be divided into two groups:
(1) those with the idea of definite frequency, such as every day, annually, and twice a week. (2) those with the idea of indefinite frequency, such as always, rarely, and never.

Definite frequency adverbs usually go at the beginning or end of the sentence or clause.

Indefinite frequency adverbs come after the verb.

Be aware of the subtle differences in the meanings of the various adverbs.

B. Conjunctions
A conjunction is used to link words, phrases, or clauses. Two types of conjunctions are coordinate conjunctions (and, or, nor, but, etc.) and subordinate conjunctions (although, since, because, when, before, etc.)

Coordinate conjunctions may link similar ideas (and, not only ... but also), opposite or contradictory ideas (but), or choices (either .. or, neither... nor). Pay attention to the meaning of the conjunction.

Subordinate conjunctions show different kind of relationships between two clauses. They may show cause and effect (cause, so, as, since), time (when, while, after, before, until, as soon as), condition (if, unless), or a contradiction (even though, although). Again, pay attention to the meaning of the subordinate conjunction.

C. PrepositionsPrepositions link their objects to the other structures within the sentence. They are used to show placement, time, direction, cause, and location. They can be used alone or in two- or three-word combinations. Unfortunately, prepositions are often used idiomatically and often contradict rules. Therefore, their use must be memorized. There are, however, a few rules that will help you.

E. Verbs: CausativeCausative verbs show that someone or something made a certain action happen. The most common causative verbs are get, make, and have. Verbs like order, cause, force, and want can also be causative verbs. They are all followed by noun clauses.

F. Verbs: ConditionalConditional sentences contain two distinct parts: the if-clause (condition) and result. In both of these parts, the verb forms change according to the time of the action(s). This structure is used for real and unreal (contrary-to-fact) statements in the present and past tenses.

For a real condition in the future, the verb in the if- clause is usually in the simple present tense, while the verb in the result clause is in the future or imperative form. INCORRECTCORRECT

Sometimes the verb in the if-clause can have the modal auxiliary will. This is because the original meaning of will was "want“. To say that a person wants or doesn't want to do something, you can use will + verb instead of the simple present tense in this clause. CORRECTOPTION

There are inference questions that will oblige you to read the entire passage. These questions will focus on tense, pronouns, and contextual moaning. Study the Patterns to Remember in the grammar review section and pay close attention to the following common traps. • In an adjective comparison in the superlative, make sure the is not omitted.

Strategies1. The conversations in part 3 are long and can be on any topic. If you can predict the topic before you hear the conversation, it will help you understand the details of the conversation. You will not have time to read both the questions, and the answer choices before you listen to the conversation. But you can scan them quickly and took for key words.
There are two types of key words: question words and content words. Focus your scanning on these key words. When you listen to the conversation, listen for key words or their synonyms or paraphrases.

In a question such as What time will the woman leave?, the key words are time, woman, and will leave. When you listen to the conversation, you should listen for references to a woman leaving in the future. You should also listen for any numbers you might have seen in the answer choices: four (four hours, four o'clock): 30 (4:30, half past 4:00, 30 minutes from now, in 30 minutes); ten (in ten minutes, ten past 4:00, 4:10, etc.). By listening for the key words (time, woman, will leave) and some of the numbers (four, ten), you will be able to focus your listening on important details. You will also get practice in listening for paraphrases and synonyms.
Words in the answer choices are often not repeated in the conversation. The speakers may use paraphrases or synonyms. For example, in a question What time does the flight depart?, the key word flight indicates the conversation will provide information about the time a plane takes off. Listen for that time. You may not hear the word flight in the conversation; the speakers may use a synonym like plane. Similarly, the speakers may say take off rather than depart.

These same common traps are found in part 3: • Confusion between similar sounds • Confusion among prepositions• Confusion about words in a different context The following exercises will give you practice in listening for specific answers for question words. You should also pay attention to content words in these practice exercises and be careful of the common traps.
Some questions require you to make an inference, for example, Who are the speakers? Here you may need to listen to the whole conversation for content clues. If the speakers are an employer and an employee, you will hear work-related words. If the speakers are a bus driver and a passenger, you will hear words related to public transportation.

There are two types of practice exercises for Parts: Strategy Practice and TOEIC Test Practice. The Strategy Practice exercises include two questions for each conversation. Each question will help you focus on a particular question word such as who, what, or when. The TOEIC Test Practice exercises have three questions for each conversation, just like on the real TOEIC test. You can practice listening for content words on both.
Before you listen lo the conversations, go through the answers and circle the content words. This will help you focus your listening.
The exercises for part 3 will prepare you to listen carefully to the question, anticipate the possible answers, and select the correct answer. Learn to listen for the patterns for the question words who, what, when, where, why, and how.

StrategiesWhen you practice for the reading section of the new TOEIC test, try to focus your attention on the topic. First read the questions and answer choices that follow the reading passage. Try to guess an answer to the question even before you look at the choices. Then look quickly over the reading passage to see if you see either a word from the choices or a synonym in the passage.
When answering the questions for the reading passages, you should look not only for a direct answer, but also for synonyms, paraphrases, and implied answers as well.
In Parts 5 and 6 you studied grammar patterns. In Part 7 you will learn to recognize thematic patterns. Each type of passage has a thematic pattern. In this chapter you will study advertisements, bulletins, forms and tables, labels, correspondence, and other reading passages.

Disputes with Merchants and Service Providers If a problem arises regarding items or services purchased with your credit card, you may have the right not to pay the balance due. You must first allow the merchant or service provider the opportunity to correct the problem. In the ease of items purchased, you must return the items to the store and ask for an exchange or a repair. In the case of services, you must request that the provider redo the services or repair any damage. It the merchant or service provider is unable to satisfactorily correct a problem, then you may inform the credit card company that you want to stop payment. Part 4: Talks
StrategiesThe talks are long and can be on any topic. Your approach to Part 4 talks should be similar to your approach to Part 3 conversations. The type of topic will be given by the narrator. Questions 97 through 100 refer to the following announcement. However, you won't know the kind of announcement (for example, an advertisement or a weather report). If you can predict the topic before you hear the talk, it will help you understand the details of the talk. You will not have time to read both the questions and the answer choices before you listen to the talk. But you can scan them quickly and look for key words. As in Part 3, there are two types of key words in Part 4: question words and content words. Focus your scanning on these key words. When you listen to the talk, listen for key words or their synonyms or paraphrases.

Common trapsIn Parts 1, 2, and 3, you learned lo pay attention to common traps. These same common traps are found in Part 4: • Confusion between similar sounds • Confusion among propositions • Confusion about words in a different context The following exercises will give you practice in listening for specific answers far question words. You should also pay attention to content words in these exercise, listen for synonyms and paraphrases, and be careful of the common traps. As in Part 3, some questions require you to make an inference, for example, What IS the problem? Here you may need to listen to the whole talk for content clues. "We desperately need a new city parking garage," said Cecil Miller, president of the association. The School Parents League expressed concern about overcrowded city schools and would like to see money spent on new school construction. The City Consumers Union is not in favor of any tax increase at all. “This new tax represents a real hardship to the needier members of our community. It will make it more difficult for many families to buy even basic necessities," explained Agnes Overall, director of the organization.
