    Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewJesus Christ, the Son of God, became man while remaining divine. He healed our relationship with God the Father through his suffering, Death, and Resurrection. The Church continues Jesus’ mission. Jesus continues to be present in the seven sacraments, which call us to a new life.

PrayerJesus, help me share your love and goodness so that I will show your presence through my example.

Faith SummaryGod the Father so loved the world that he sent his Son, Jesus, to save the human family. The mystery of the Son of God becoming man in Jesus is called the Incarnation. Jesus’ mission on earth continues through the Church, of which he is the head. As members of the Church, we are living signs of Jesus on earth. God, through the Holy Spirit, gives us a special gift called sanctifying grace, which helps us live like Jesus.

Jesus’ touch healed people and brought them life and peace. Jesus touches our lives today through the celebration of the sacraments. A sacrament is a sign by which Jesus shares God’s life and blessings—his grace—with us. The sacraments celebrate Jesus’ presence among us. Baptism and Confirmation, two of the Sacraments of Initiation, welcome us into the community of the Church.

Baptism is a call to a new life in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. Baptism unites us with the Death and Resurrection of Jesus and takes away Original Sin. As members of the Church, we are called to share our time and talents for the good of the Church. We are also called to work for peace, justice, and unity in the world.

In Confirmation we receive the Holy Spirit. Our bond with Christ is made stronger, and we are better able to give witness to the faith. Confirmation completes Baptism. Through the Spirit, we receive the grace to live holy lives dedicated to God and to participate in the Church’s mission of proclaiming the Good News about Jesus.

My ResponseYou have learned about many ways in which we can be like Jesus. Write one way you can be like Jesus in your everyday life.

    Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewEveryone is called to be part of God’s people and to serve his kingdom. Although each person is called to serve in different ways, we all are united in the vocation of serving God, other people, and the Church.

PrayerJesus, you have called me to be part of your kingdom. Help me appreciate all who serve your Church. Help me find the vocation to which you are calling me.

Faith SummaryThe Church is diverse and united. Its members live in different places and have different gifts. Yet the Church is united by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Church members are united in beliefs as expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and Church teachings. A visible sign of Church unity is the pope, together with the bishops.

The Sacraments at the Service of Communion are Holy Orders and Matrimony. Through these sacraments, people serve God’s kingdom and their communities.

Holy Orders is the sacrament in which men are called to serve the Church as bishops, priests, and deacons. They help continue Jesus’ presence on earth in the tradition of the Apostles by teaching, leading worship, serving as pastors, and celebrating the sacraments.

The Sacrament of Matrimony is the commitment of a man and a woman to lifelong love for each other; the couple receives the grace to fulfill this promise through the sacrament. Parents, together with their children, make up the family, or domestic church.

Mary was called to the vocation of being the virgin mother of Jesus. She humbly cooperated with God’s plan. Mary was preserved from Original Sin and was free from sin throughout her life.

    Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewWe encounter Jesus in the seven sacraments. We receive healing in the Sacraments of Penance and Reconciliation and of the Anointing of the Sick. How can you help bring healing, comfort, and restoration to others in your life?

PrayerJesus, help me trust in your healing presence now and always.

Faith SummaryJesus is the Bread of Life. He nourishes us with his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. In the Eucharistic celebration, Jesus is present in the priest, in the assembly, in the Word of God, and in the consecrated bread and wine.

When we celebrate the Eucharist, we recognize the real presence of Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine. The liturgy commemorates, or recalls, the sacrifice of Jesus, who died to make reparation for our sins. At the time of consecration during Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus. This is called transubstantiation. To celebrate the Eucharist, we must first confess any mortal sin that we remember having committed.

Penance and Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick are the two Sacraments of Healing.

In Penance and Reconciliation, we receive absolution of our sins through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our relationship with God and others is healed by being sorry for our sins, confessing them to a priest, and trying to do better.

In the Anointing of the Sick, people who are ill, injured, or aged are anointed with oil by a priest. They receive forgiveness from sins, comfort in their suffering, and spiritual—and sometimes even physical—healing. Through this sacrament, our suffering is united with Jesus’ power.

My ResponseYou have thought about forgiveness and healing in this unit and talked about how they are part of Catholic life. Write one action you will take to bring forgiveness and healing into your own daily life.

    Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewWe have a new life in Jesus. In our new life we are called to be like Jesus, to make good choices, and to act with love and kindness toward our neighbors.

PrayerJesus, help me as I seek to make good choices and to be a good friend to others.

Faith SummaryAs Christians, we are called to lead moral lives in which God is central. We believe that we have a new life in Jesus and are called to follow his teachings and be like him. With the grace and help of the Holy Spirit, we can make good choices that keep us in close friendship with God and with others.

We are called to live moral lives, but all too often we make selfish and sinful choices that harm our relationships with God and others. Christian life commits us to truth in deeds and words. We must monitor what we say so that we don’t cause harm to others, intentionally or unintentionally. We must recognize that sin does not harm only individuals; it also has negative effects on society as a whole. The presence of sin helps explain why there are such things as war, violence, prejudice, crime, drug abuse, and unfair treatment of others.

Jesus is present to us in the sacraments. The sacraments give us the grace to act in our lives as Jesus acted in his. They help us make good moral choices and act on the choices in our everyday lives. Making good moral choices includes respecting our bodies and having self-control. Chastity involves treating our own sexuality and others’ sexuality with respect, whether we are young or old, married or single.

Jesus will judge each of us. We will be judged on whether we have lived a life of good deeds and of kindness toward our neighbors. As a result of this judgment, each person will be united with God in heaven, undergo purification in Purgatory before being united with God, or enter hell—total separation from God—as a result of his or her choices.

My ResponseThis week, set aside a time with Jesus when you can talk to him about your questions, ideas, and worries. Talk with Jesus about how you can put into practice what you have learned this year.

The Right Steps to Make a Good ChoiceIf you want to know how God wants you to act, you can follow certain steps:

¨ Ask the Holy Spirit for help.

¨ Think about what God‛s law and the Church‛s teaching have to say about this situation.

¨ Think about how your decision will affect your relationship with God and with others. Ask yourself whether your decision will harm you or other people.

¨ Ask for advice from people who live the Christian faith.

¨ Remember that Jesus Christ is with you.

Now imagine that you have a big school assignment due next week. One of your friends knows how to get the answer key to the assignment. Your friend offers to steal the answers so you can use them for your assignment. Write what you would do to follow the five steps above in this situation.
